Coughing cat choking

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing cat choking

coughing

I'm glad you're home and Tommy got to meet everyone. A cat coughing is such a scary sound, isn't it. Jade was coughing way in the backyard a few weeks ago and I could hear her in the house and went running!
My cat suddenly started coughing and her pupils are huge...she doesn't seem to have a fever but she is not herself. She is open-mouthed breathing. what is wrong?
I wouldn't worry too much about your cat, unless you see some physical symptoms-difficulty swallowing, coughing, or choking. If you don't see any symptoms, then your kitty is just normal. Honestly, nothing to worry about!!
My cat is about 10 years old and overweight. She has been experiencing some difficulty with her breathing. Sometimes she starts coughing and it almost sounds like i can her fluid there..like pneumonia or something. She does this a couple times a day and i'm concerned. It also looks like she has extra weight under her neck and i wonder if something is choking her..could it be allergies? Any help would be appreciated..
I ask b/c I put a HEPA furnace filter on the front of one of the fans in the bedroom, within a few days, it became darkened from dust, cat hairs and other things I can't identify. As for the cat, I've had her for 17 years, I have never been allergic or had any kind of reactions to her dander. Could this be a problem, even though I've never had it before? Still could it be from the extreme heat and puddles of sweat to freezing within a 5 minute time frame. Or both?
I am constantly straining muscles from the intense coughing, I've coughed up blood twice. I finally had a CAT scan and it shows that my lungs are fine, except from some harmless scarring from prolonged coughing. Antibiotics have no effect on the cough. I've used Tussionex (codeine cough syrup) for years, but drs. don't like to prescribe it, so I use it when I can't stand it any more to make it last. The cough leaves me so exhausted, and my muscles painful, and it's almost impossible to sleep.
This wakes me up frequently, and I have a hard time stopping the tickle and coughing. This keeps me from getting adequate sleep. I have tried over the counter and prescription cough medicines. I was on allegra and my doctor has switched me to zyrtec. There has not been any improvement. When I am having a bad night I have to keep 2 lozenges in my mouth to get any sleep. Some nights after getting to sleep I wake coughing and choking. I also have a frequent tickle in my throat throughout the day.
I get a sore throat (not tonsils but when you swallow) I now go straight on antibiotics and use Bricanyl inhaler although it doesnt seem to have much effect except to cause alot of mucus coughed up from the lungs. It causes me to have spasm coughing and if I cannot control this to 3 or 4 coughs my windpipe closes over making it hard to breath in or out. The last one about 2 years ago stopped me breathing in and out completely for 10 to 15 seconds and I thought I had bought it.
I have bad acid reflux with it and choking and coughing. Can't lay down and sleep, which I hate. Thyroid levels are off right now. Will get them changed tomorrow. Looking forward to becoming me again. Hope that is soon. Thanks for the emails, I appreciate them.
For 4 months I have been constantly coughing, gagging, choking, spitting up mucus and throwing up. I have been to 3 different doctors and each time they have treated me with allergy meds., cortizone shots, and diffent antibiotics to no avail.. I had a CAT scan of my sinus 2 weeks ago and the sinus is clear. They now have me scheduled for allergy testing coming in a week. I am into my 9th day of a 10 day antibiotic for the 4 time.
But my mom forced them to do the initial Cat-Scan due to the second X-Ray did not show Pneumonia but yet I was coughing up so much cold that something was going on. When they did the Cat-Scan they said it showed Pneumonia and a lesion that needed to be monitored and they began to administer antibiotics by IV. Five weeks later I am worse my hearing is off I get headaches all the time. My voice goes in and out my tongue is swollen I get weak if I walk to much.
So, I turned around, and the adult cat, who was beside me, went to him as well. I don’t believe they were together when it happened. Now, putting the gagging/choking/coughing together with the swallowing hard when purring hard, I am wondering what it could be. I mentioned it to the vet’s office when I made the appt. Of course, I didn’t speak to the vet, just the receptionist. She had us on-call if they got a cancellation today, Friday, but they didn’t call.
I do understand that some people can get PVCs to stop by coughing.. but I don't recall anyone talk about choking. Is your arrhythmia condition under a doctor's care? Have you been medically diagnosed?
Last night my 12 yr old spayed Spirit was sleeping next to me and woke me up making odd coughing/choking noises-this lasted about 5 min or so-she hasn't eaten anything odd-as I said she was sleeping next to me so couldn't have choked on anything. It was similar to when you get a drink and it goes down wrong. She rec'vd quickly and seems fine. She was @ vet and got thorough check when she got the bladder inf a few months ago-all ok then. Any thoughts??
I could almost deal with the burning stomach if I didn't have the tight bronchials, coughing, mucus, feeling like I am choking, burping, and just generally focused on every wheezing breath routine. If someone has any suggestions other than take more tums, proton pump inhibitors, eliminating foods, raise head of bed, inhalers, I would appreciate them.
I had an occasional and slight runny nose and drainage down my throat, but really no symptoms other than the coughing and the sleeplessness. After a week, I finally went in to see a doctor; I couldn't get an appointment with my primary care physician, so this was someone I hadn't seen before. She said it was probably a virus and would go away within the week; since my biggest problem was failing to sleep due to the coughing, she prescribed something to try to dampen the cough response.
Somehow the fungus and/or bacteria were dripping post nasally down making me cough and wheeze and choke .; As soon as I got the antifungal medication on top of antibiotics, coughing, wheezing choking and lung pain is gone in 2 days. I have been going from one ENT to another looking for help, and they would look and say that there is nothing, and finally I found a great ENT who immediately diagnosed mold throughout my sinuses without me even mentioning it.
pilling IS actually easier imo. Not nearly the chance of choking like with liquid. We have choked Jade many times, and it's really scary to hear and see her coughing. Either way is no fun, but pilling with 2 people is much easier than dealing with liquid, I think. Good luck!
Now he has no speech function and is unable to make sound even when coughing. Swallowing problems developed over last month, liquid thickening now progressed to consistency of milkshake to keep from choking. Swallowing issue led to pneumonnia and is currently in local hospital, has been for 12 days. Doctors have done cat scan, pet scan?, mri, etc. and are unable to find any cause, said cancer causing speech and swallowing problem but were unable to find cancer on scans.
A horrid tickle/sting in my throat which no matter how hard you try to ignore or fight it, you start coughing...and coughing... and coughing. Due to the cough my bladder is rebelling, my eyes water constantly, and occasionally vomit. I went back to the Dr (new doc as my old one suddenly stopped practicing in December), and she started by saying it was my BP meds... I take Lisinopril/HCTZ.
This does not happen only when eating. The onset was a couple of rounds with dysphagia (choking episodes), though earlier I had been told I had pharyngitis. I have lost a significant amount of weight, under other circumstances this might be a good thing. I have Graves' disease so there is some question of an autoimmune disorder.
The best method of thinning out mucus is to drink lots of water. There are no other major medications to do this. I would speak to your doctor about this problem to make sure nothing else is going on, such as a secondary infection. From what you have described it sounds like the source of the mucus could be postnasal drip. This is drainage from the nose and sinuses dripping down the back of the throat. It can cause coughing as a result of irritation of the lungs and throat.
I also am dealing with a chronic mold exposure issue in my appartment, my two dogs have several symptoms which were unkown however after discovering the large amounts of mold and fungal deposits it seems to clarify some issues, my dogs also suffer similar health issues, both my dogs are coughing ( to the point of choking ) and weezing along with thedropy eyelids as well as chronic running eyes, all these symptoms manifested themsleves approx 60-90 after I moved in to the appartment which I now k
When they came back normal, all he could tell me is to allergy proof my house - get a hepa filter, get rid of carpeting and not allow my cat in the bedroom (really the most difficult thing).I also have a referral to an allergist. I have enlarged tonsils and I think that contributes to this chronic problem. To make sinus infections less severe, stay hydrated. I drink extra water. Chicken soup and tea with lemon & honey helps. Inhale steam.
I have all the symptoms of the goiter. Breathing problems, lump in the neck, coughing a lot ect. I'm very afraid i will have to have surgery and i have never had surgery before..I had blood test done to be sure if i had a thyroid problem two yrs before and they said all was good. I continue to have problems really bad. The breathing trouble is the worst and the pain that comes with it...Is there anything i can do that may help me for now?? I;m very scared.
I ended up doubled over and couldnt breathe or make a sound, till the liquid came out my mouth, I fell to the flour in a coughing fit. I am scared of choking to death now. I called my doctors answering service (sunday) and by the time she called back hours later. My voice was near normal again. it is weird when that happens, it will happen in the middle of a word. Like midsentence, voice goes back and forth to some crazy sounds to almost normal. I did record it with my husbands help.
