It seems to come in waves of coughing spells and then no coughs. I have been coughing up phlegm that is mostly white/clear with small amounts of a yellowish color and small brown flecks. When I lay down I can hear myself breathing/wheezing and makes it impossible to sleep, not to mention coughing fits making my partner unable to sleep. I have been taking antihistamines before bed and it seems to help calm my cough.
Lately, not right after I smoke or while smoking but about 45 minutes to an hour after, I regularly have a coughing fit where I am coughing really hard. I also have had phlegm for a while and more so in the morning. I am not out of shape and actually exercise regularly and can run miles at a time without my lungs getting too tired. I know that I should quit smoking and probably will in a few years, but I am young now and do not think I should be coughing so violently.
I have no coughing but 2 big brown tissue like pieces came out of my mouth. Can phlegm turn this brown color and turn hard if it was inside your system for years? What could it be? What causes brown phlegm?
Sounds like you may have infectious acute bronchitis. Brown phlegm and the "horrible taste" suggest that your infection may be bacterial. Being a non-smoker, this bronchitis will most likely resolve on its own. However, the resolution of your illness and symptoms would probably be hastened by treatment with an antibiotic.
i have been coughing smelling brown spit for the past 5 days. The cough comes from only my right side. If i sleep with my right side i smell something bad coming up my throat then i start coughing, been on asthama treatement for 2weeks now, could it be the cause. I cough a lot at night and mornings.
However, if the cough is severe and very forceful, there's a slight risk of pulling or loosening stitches that have been used during the surgery, which may or may not be a problem. Also, if you are coughing up colored phlegm (yellow, brown, green, etc) then you most definitely need to be seen by your doctor - it could mean an infection. I've also had a hysterectomy several years ago and I know how painful it can be to cough after an abdominal surgery.
I have always coughed up brown flecks in my phlegm. But now, I have been coughing up dark grey after having some chronically infected teeth pulled. Could this be a result of the local anesthetic injections, or a worsening of the copd? I can only get rid of bronchitis for about a month before it comes back every time. Antibiotics (doxicycline) seem to have the inside of my mouth raw, with white patches on my tongue and a few white blisters in mouth, also. Now I'm on Penicillin for the teeth.
I saw my pulmonary again, he said my chest pains are from coughing, I was still producing lots of mucous, white thick, some yellow, plus brown/rusty speckled phlegm. He took another chest x-ray for comparison, said it was fine, just like the first time. He told me the brown specks are "old blood", he gave me a 5 day steroid treatment, which I finished well over a week ago - I do feel better but I am still coughing up "old blood" and I am extremely worried.
after about 2 months i began coughing again but this time it was more phlegmmy, I was coughing up brown and green phlegm. I went to the doctors again and they diagnosed me with sinusitis, gave me a weeks worth or anitbiotics and said that should work. The coughing did go down and the colouration of the phlegm lessened but the phlegm never went away.
I am at work and started coughing, I realized that I started to taste blood, and when I spit what I could into a paper towel after coughing some more, I discovered that the phlegm or spit was actually pink. I blew my nose and it doesn't appear to be bleeding, and I wasn't able to cough up much more after this. But being asthmatic I am worried as to whether or not this is common or is something more serious going on?
I have been having a rusty or blood associated phlegm (sputum) for about 8 months. I don't cough at all. Such phlegm easily comes out after I wake up from sleeping. At other times, I have to summon (pull out phlegm) repeatedly and the blood assocoated or the rusty would show up in the fourth or fifth call. I have burning pain on my ribs to the right and left of what is called "infrasternal notch" (where gastritis pain is usually felt).
Over the past couple weeks, I’ve been coughing up phlegm. And I see red in it, maybe blood. Mostly, the red appears in the morning, and usually clears after a few cups of coffee. Using napkins, I regularly monitor and look at the phlegm. Sometimes it looks like tomato color, and I may see some food fragments, such as peanuts or bits of clam meat. So far this is the only (lung cancer) symptom on the lists which I notice.
Last night I brought up some that was all red. I only started coughing after the blood was found in my phlegm, so what could possibly cause this?
I quit smoking 10 days ago and eversince i have been coughing up pale yellow phlegm with little brown specs in the morning. (only in the morning about a quorter size). it does not look like blood.its tiny little brown specs. i went to a pulmonologist, he have me a breathing test and i did great. I am not coughing and i do not have any shortness of breath. the doctor did not seam to have an answer for the phlegm... he told me to use a nasal spray...and mucinex...
Is it normal, or usual for a heavy marijuana smoker (numerous times daily for 6+ years), to be coughing up clear phlegm with dark gray/brown globular matter encased in it, mainly in the mornings and randomly in small amounts throughout the day? In the mornings there are much more dark pieces in clear phlegm, and when it randomly happens throughout the day, it is just small specks or chunks encased in clear phlegm.
The muscle pain went away and came back. Now the thick clear phlegm has a horrible taste. I'm not really coughing so I'm not sure if it's coming from sinuses or down in my throat or bronchials. Sometimes it had flecks of light brown in it. Any idea what all this could be?
For quite a while now ive been coughing (hacking) up brown/light brown colored phlegm. I went to the ER a few days ago, but with lack of insurance, i got very little answers or anything. The doctor prescribed Z Pac for the phlegm, and prilosec because when i drink soda it sometimes comes back up, followed with stomach acid. I really am just looking for some reassurance that im not going to die.

ThI have not felt sick again but every now and then I cough up some clear phlegm with brown spots. I haven't had a real cough and mostly the phlegm is white or clear. I do seem to have some occasional chest pain but can't tell if it's a muscle pain or something in my lungs. I have allergies(take claritin D)I also Have GERD and have not been taking anything for it. I was wheezing when it first came about but that has pretty much gone away. I don't have any coughing fits at all.
Susie, I have a similar situation, though the phlegm has brown flecks, as apposed to being purely brown. If you go to search, type in "brown flecks" it'll take you to my post (pic included). I've been smoking much longer than you. In the past, it seemed like my lungs would "clear out" once, twice a year around Spring/Fall time. The color was brown. I hope this resolves for you. I again plan to try to quit smoking but need to get past a few hurdles first.
5 months when I clear my throat or cough something up, there are small specs of brown stuff and specs of blood in it. I went to 2 different doctors when this started and both said allergies. One Dr did a chest x-ray and said it was clear. I am just concerned because it is still going on 4 months later. Its never alot, but I dont see how blood in phlegm can be normal. Just wanting another opinon on what it could be. Thank You!
The cough is phlegmy, with a yellowish/brown tint to it and has lasted. On a few occasions, I noticed a pen dot sized speck of bright red blood and it scared me, so I went to my doc. He asked me a series of questions, listened to my chest and lungs and said I sounded clear. I just found out I am pregnant, so as part of my routine blood work, a CBC was done. Doc said my white blood cell count was slightly elevated. He came to the the conclusion that I had bronchitis.
The first episode was a small amount of bright fresh blood with some phlegm and on two subsequent occasions, the same day, the blood was darker and more integral with the phlegm. They were very small amounts each time. Today, a week later, there was again some phlegm which seemed to come from deep down and it had brown mucus with it. Could this simply be old blood, the residue from the original bleed or is it a sign of continued bleeding? I feel well, no fever etc.
Hi there, I have a question... I am 26 years old and have smoked for 10 years. I quit smoking 2 weeks ago, and dont plan on going back to it ever! The problem I am having is, every morning when I wake up, I still feel a clogged up in my throat (Like I have been smoking) and this forces me to "hork". It's always green, brown, or yellow, and there is always a little bit of blood in it.
I am 50 yrs old I have never smoked but for the past two years I keep getting really bad chest infections the doctor put me on inhalers and said I suffered from asthma, every morning I cough up phlegm and my chest feels tight when I spit out the phlegm its brown in colur like its got blood in it after I rince my mouth this stops until the next morning.
