Do you mean that if i do not have any phlegm after taking bromhexine, then there will be no more problem with the blood in phlegm? so , do i need to consult a doctor? A good news to tell, today the phlegm i spit out without coughing have no blood with it, except once. =) I did not sleep in air-con room de as i saw some of the post here said that if the air is too dry, that may cause blood vessels in nasal breaks. Thanx for ur advice and opinion. Ur opinion really console me a lot. Thank you!

Hello. I've recently had a cold and lately I've noticed that every morning when I spit out some phlegm there are streaks of blood in it. When I started coughing, it wasn't there then but after a few days of coughing really heavily it started. It only happens in the mornings though after waking up. No blood comes up the rest of the day no matter how much I cough. It's been going on four about... I don't know, 2 to 4 days now.
Is the blood seen when coughing up phlegm and mixed with saliva? Do you have any bad teeth or gums, that could be the cause of it? If it's mixed with phlegm and you see blood, you should definitely go to your doctor ASAP (which you should do anyways with the gastric issues going on). If it's not associated with coughing, it is most likely related to teeth or gum issues and you should get seen by your dentist.
I had cold/flu in Dec 2007, since then i've been clonstantly clearing my throat of phlegm, it is clear phlegm. I'm not sure i'm meant to cough it up or not, but i'm scared to swallow it made me gag and a few months after my cold which scared me.
This morning, I cleared my throat as usual, but 3 times there were traces of blood in it. It's still clear but just with little bits of blood in it, one was a streak of blood. There was alot more clear phlegm.
Was the blood from brushing your teeth that got mixed with your phlegm? I know that has happened to me. If it was alot and with coughing, mention it to your doc. I also get streaks in my mucous from an irritated throat (from coughing excessively due to a cold etc..).I always say this though, if in doubt, always talk to your doctor.
Hemoptysis or coughing up blood could occur with tuberculosis. The other causes could be due to lung tumors, bleeding disorders or due to side effects of medications. The other causes for long term cough besides asthma are GERD and post nasal drip from allergies. GERD is gastro esophageal reflux disease where the stomach acids come back into the esophagus and spill into the wind pipe causing cough. Treatment with antacids will help neutralize the acids.
Not a large amount about 5p/dime size. The actual phlegm was clearish with a green/grey tinge. The blood was bright red. Needles to say, after reading everything online I am now scared witless! I am going to speak to my GP tomorrow. It has not happened since. Has this happened to anyone else and it be nothing scarey?

I have been coughing up phlegm daily for around 7 years. I've tried antibiotics several times without any success. I've had x-rays and mri scans but nothing showed up. Around 18 months ago my voice started to change. I was then prescribed omeprazole 20 mg capsules which make a slight difference and my voice returned to normal. But I still have to tap my chest and often have to get someone to hit my back to dislodge the phlegm which is milky white/ beige globules and quite a lot of it.

Anyway, rust colored phlegm could be the result of old blood down in the lungs if you are coughing it up. Typically it is nothing to worry about but once in a blue moon it could be tuberculosis which requires medical attention. Doubtful that you have TB but you could check with your doctor to be on the safe side.
For phlegm and mucous, it helps to double your intake of liquid to keep it loose and flowing. Try not to use a cough suppressent as it is better to have it moving.
In January 2008 is when I noticed I was coughing a lot. It keeps me up at night and I have thick white sometimes yellow phlegm that I cough up daily. It is very hard to cough up and I cough extremely harsh. It seems like it is all upper respitory to me. In April 2008, I had my first mini sinus surgery which did not help any of my symptoms. I hacked up a real thick sample that was directly from my throat, and spit it out onto a tissue. I noticed a streak of blood on the tissue mixed with yellow phlegm. This continued for maybe twelve coughings with blood being expectorated each time. i had not had coughs for at least 3 weeks prior to this. my blood pressure right after the incident was 181/110 .i am a diabetic butmy CBG at the time was 140 . i had TB over two years ago but was cured. i had a CVA bleed stroke over a year ago. i feel that it is not a relapse of TB. i suspect it is caused by the elevated blood pressure?
It seems to come in waves of coughing spells and then no coughs. I have been coughing up phlegm that is mostly white/clear with small amounts of a yellowish color and small brown flecks. I have an almost 4 yr old daughter, who at night wakes up coughing, gagging on to much phlegm, and follows with throwing up. Last night she threw up 6 times. No this is no the flu, or something she ate. This happens once a week. She generally wakes up with alot of phlegm and has a hard time coughing it out.

Okay so it started almost half a week ago I'd say.. I wasn't feeling sick at all, but for some reason I just started coughing up a lot of phlegm.. clearish to yellow colored. I don't smoke cigarettes, only on the occassional weekend. I do smoke pot.
Anyways I thought the phelgm coughing up mighta been caused by some resin I was smoking, but they said that was black phlegm, not clearish yellow...
So a few days pass of coughing up phlegm, and now I'm sitting here.. irritated...
Prior to being admitted I had a significant amount of blood I was given IVs and started treatment for TB Now again I was at work and started coughing up blood . They took X-rays and blood after about six hours later I was told that their was nothing wrong with me and the cause of my bleeding was due to to much coughing when I had not cough prior to this time . Right now I have not being able to go outside because its a little bit cold .
Throughout the rest of the day I tried coughing to see if blood came up, nothing. Today, again upon waking, I cleared the phlegm out of my throat and there was a dot of blood. Less than yesterday. So I blew my nose and there was dry blood in my boogies. I am worried that the blood in my phlegm from my throat is coming from my lungs and it is a sign I have lung cancer. Logic would say the blood is coming from my nose since there is blood there too.
