I have been coughing up phlegm daily for around 7 years. I've tried antibiotics several times without any success. I've had x-rays and mri scans but nothing showed up. Around 18 months ago my voice started to change. I was then prescribed omeprazole 20 mg capsules which make a slight difference and my voice returned to normal. But I still have to tap my chest and often have to get someone to hit my back to dislodge the phlegm which is milky white/ beige globules and quite a lot of it.
I have a cold, am not a smoker but am coughing up blood in my phlegm.
Is the blood seen when coughing up phlegm and mixed with saliva? Do you have any bad teeth or gums, that could be the cause of it? If it's mixed with phlegm and you see blood, you should definitely go to your doctor ASAP (which you should do anyways with the gastric issues going on). If it's not associated with coughing, it is most likely related to teeth or gum issues and you should get seen by your dentist.
I am asthmatic since around past 30 years. This morning I found blood in my phlegm when I was brushing my teeth. This is the first time I found blood in my phlegm. I am a non-smoker, non-alcoholic & vegetarian (often I eat eggs too). Kindly help.

one day morning, i spit up my phlegm then i see some blood stained there. after that spit i did not have blood stained in my phlegm for that day. but the second day, i had blood stained phlegm in the morning and all the days whenever i spit the phlegm ( without coughing it out)....so...

Hello. I've recently had a cold and lately I've noticed that every morning when I spit out some phlegm there are streaks of blood in it. When I started coughing, it wasn't there then but after a few days of coughing really heavily it started. It only happens in the mornings though after waking up. No blood comes up the rest of the day no matter how much I cough. It's been going on four about... I don't know, 2 to 4 days now.
a) I have the same symptom as OP- why would old blood look the exact same shade as the tar and smoke that builds up on my bong, with the exact same smell? It's not blood, obvi. Blood would be more rust-colored, and it's too watery; there wouldn't be separate bits surrounded by phlegm, even if it congealed as it aged. Blood would mix with the phlegm since they're both water-based.
b) Your response has many red flags. I'm no doctor, but I research the stuff I smoke.
Throughout the rest of the day I tried coughing to see if blood came up, nothing. Today, again upon waking, I cleared the phlegm out of my throat and there was a dot of blood. Less than yesterday. So I blew my nose and there was dry blood in my boogies. I am worried that the blood in my phlegm from my throat is coming from my lungs and it is a sign I have lung cancer. Logic would say the blood is coming from my nose since there is blood there too.
A more serious cause of brown phlegm is blood that arises from the bronchi, voice box, windpipe or lungs. Coughing up brown phlegm is also a common symptom of excessive smoking. This is due to resin sticking to the viscous texture of the phlegm and being ejected by the body.
You need to drink lot of water, steam inhalation with eucalyptus and mint, antibiotics if infection etc will help you. Treatment of sinus infection will alleviate the headache.
You should go to the doctor to be checked out because if you stpped cold turkey it can be something More serious then you might think
(I smoke about 8-10 a day).Yesterday I did a huge cough and spat the resulting phlegm in the sink. It had blood in it. Not a large amount about 5p/dime size. The actual phlegm was clearish with a green/grey tinge. The blood was bright red. Needles to say, after reading everything online I am now scared witless! I am going to speak to my GP tomorrow. It has not happened since. Has this happened to anyone else and it be nothing scarey?

sound like your lungs are clearing and you may have bronco or asthma or something see your doctor some times when you stop smokeing this happen.

I experience several bouts of heavy coughing that can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes while coughing up mostly clear phlegm with some of it a sea green color and at other times tinged pink - though this is rare. One out of ten coughing fits ends with me vomiting .... I guess it would be best described as a clear foamy form of phlegm. I do experience hot and cold flashes, sometimes it helps my breathing to step outside and sometimes it makes it worse.
Two weeks ago, I had this strange cold, one day running nose, one day coughing, one day heavy muscus then coughing fits sometimes initiated by particular foods and sometimes no eating or cold air and night coughing fits( not every night) were more harsh with lots of phlegm and stomache gas and spitting out. The sore throat subsided significantly and is immediately relieved (usually in the morning) after coughing up green / yellow phlegm congestion. On Day 3 now, sore throat is almost non-existent except mild upon waking in the morning and then gone for the rest of the day after coughing up congestion / phlegm first thing in the morning. Tested negative for COVID and Flu on Day 2. Started 5-day, Z-Pac antibiotics on Day 2.
Anyway, rust colored phlegm could be the result of old blood down in the lungs if you are coughing it up. Typically it is nothing to worry about but once in a blue moon it could be tuberculosis which requires medical attention. Doubtful that you have TB but you could check with your doctor to be on the safe side.
For phlegm and mucous, it helps to double your intake of liquid to keep it loose and flowing. Try not to use a cough suppressent as it is better to have it moving.
All pet scans are clear and x-rays clear still I have a cough that sometimes is that of a heavy smoker. Coughing brings up clear mucus. Other than this cough I feel great.

I am at work and started coughing, I realized that I started to taste blood, and when I spit what I could into a paper towel after coughing some more, I discovered that the phlegm or spit was actually pink. I blew my nose and it doesn't appear to be bleeding, and I wasn't able to cough up much more after this. My husband has been coughing for at least three-four months and its getting worst everyday. He went to a doctor a month into the coughing and was "diagnosed" with broncitus. Two months later he's still coughing even more. He does cough up phelm, but its no blood in it (yet)! He's never smoked, never drank, 46 years old, he works "graveyard shift" at a place producing product labels. What could it be?

I hacked up a real thick sample that was directly from my throat, and spit it out onto a tissue. I noticed a streak of blood on the tissue mixed with yellow phlegm. I continued to try to bring phlegm up, and didn’t notice the blood anymore. Then, about an hour later, I once again brought up a real thick sample from deep within and there was a smaller bit of blood (I had to inspect the tissue very closely to identify it).
