Coughing at bedtime

Common Questions and Answers about Coughing at bedtime

coughing

Are your sinuses still draining? If so, then that would be a good reason as to why you are coughing...As the sinuses get better, so should the coughing..but that is just my opinion. If it becomes really bothersome, then a note to the doc would be good idea in case he or she has other ideas in mind along with a change in treatment.
my 5 year old daughter lies down at night, she cannot stop coughing.. she naps in the same bed that day, no cough, but as soon as night comes, and bed time, she coughs all night long.. we have had no sleep in three months.. the drs say it is nothing -- allergies, or a sinus infection, and put us on zurteck and a z-pac.. but it has done nothing.. she has a severe history of upper respitory infections .. from 2 on, 2-3 almost died.. from it..we are at a loss! .. HELP!!!!!!

I have incessant burping, weasing & coughing all day from the time I wake in the mornings. I have tried many natural cures but nothing works. I would appreciate any comments.
Hi All, My daughter is 16 months old. She has been waking at night for almost 3 weeks now with a violent cough. She coughs, gags, retches and sometimes vomits. After 10 or 15 minutes, it fades away. She then sleeps the rest of the night. SOme mornings she coughs a bit- but not as violently as during the night. She has no cough at all during the day, no cold, no blocked nose, in good health otherwise.
Raise head end of bed. Take Omeprazole empty stomach in morning and an antacid gel at bedtime. Refrain from smoking, alcohol, fuzzy drinks and spicy food. See if these tips help you. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
I too have those uncontrollable coughing attacks and have been having them since September. At first, my doctor thought I was allergic to something and put me on Zyrtec and Codine cough syrup. It would go away for a few weeks then return with a vengance. I've had chest xrays, CBC's and other blood test but all were negative. My cough generates in my throat, like a lump or something. Nighttime is especially awful. My GP referred me at an ENT and it took me three weeks to get an appointment.
He was tested for whooping cough it was negative. He then began coughing fits that resulted in vomiting. We are now in the 6th week and he daily sometimes more then once is vomiting after a coughing fit or any physical activity like running around. The Dr. has him on singular once a day and albuteral 4X day. Has anyone experienced this before and do you know what is going on??
They tell me the cough/wheezing can last for months, as it will take time for my increased meds to help the situation. I'm coughing so much, of course it is worse at the evening and early morning. I have missed 3 days of work this week alone. I have never had this happen as a result of my Esophagus issues. Is there any other remedy that can help eliminate or lessen the amount of wheezing and congestion and coughing I have??
sir, I have been suffering from coughing problem for th last 5-6 years. some type of irritation in my lungs happens and after luch or dinner some sort of vomitting/white mucus comes out and ocassionaly also mucus comes out sometimes. Working in a office is horrific when I have this cough and I hate it when everyone looks at me. I don't even want my husband or kids looking at me when I'm having a coughing fit. Very embarassing. With all this modern medicine there's got to be something they can do.
My dad took her to get spayed about 2 weeks ago, and this past Saturday we took her on a 3 hour trip with us to go visit my grandma. Later on Sunday evening, when we arrived back home, my pup Tedi began coughing. Not frequently but once every few minutes. Awhile later around bedtime she settled down and kind of seem depressed, which isnt like her because she's usually in a playful mood from morning to bedtime. My dad and I just thought she was tired or she missed my grandma.

A hard candy sometimes soothes my throat so I don't react to the tickle of the cough coming on. He suggested Zantac 150 at bedtime and that helped for awhile, but I'm back to the coughing again. Also, my ENT sez that too much Zantac can counteract the Prilosec. Vicous circle. I get a sore throat (not tonsils but when you swallow) I now go straight on antibiotics and use Bricanyl inhaler although it doesnt seem to have much effect except to cause alot of mucus coughed up from the lungs. It causes me to have spasm coughing and if I cannot control this to 3 or 4 coughs my windpipe closes over making it hard to breath in or out. The last one about 2 years ago stopped me breathing in and out completely for 10 to 15 seconds and I thought I had bought it.
I am convinced that I have sinus drainage at night. Like the others on your site; the coughing goes on for about 2 hours to clear my air passages. I use nasonex once a day and take one singular before bedtime at about 9 p.m. and it helped for about 2 weeks. Will a simple sinus operation help?
These methods had absolutely no effect during this time and we had to simply ride out the storm. Tonight we had dinner as usual without knowingly adding anything different to what she usually eats. At bed time she began to act up and would not stay in her naughty spot. After a while she would just start laughing and keep disobeying us. We are pretty tough parents and have never given in to tantrums, pestering or pressure.
Barb, I have been having similar problems for almost two years myself (though my symptoms seem less severe that yours). I developed my condition after contracting the flu, followed by bronchitis. My doctors were baffled as well. I saw a general practitioner, an allergist, an ENT, and a pulmonologist, all of them were unable to diagnose me - I've been given everything from asthma medication to drugs for immune deficiencies (none helped).
The episodes would best be described as when someone cries/sobs very hard and then stops - it's the sounds they make when they stop the hard crying- similar to gasping hiccups/spasms and quick breaths or what my Grandmother calls 'snubbing'. He only does this at night when he is asleep, not crying, but does wimper a bit during the episode. He is developmentally on target, and VERY active.
I have been on 2 courses of antibiotics (Biaxin and Azithromax), on a steroid inhaler, albuterol inhaler prn, a course of oral steroids (today is day 4 of regimine), codeine syrup at bedtime and OTC decongestants. Whenever the decongestants wear off I feel like my lungs are filling with fluid. This morning at 5 am, when the codeine syrup and decongestants had long lost effect I woke up coughing.
It's only Tuesday, so meanwhile, the doc ordered me to administer the Zantac to my daughter at bedtime at least, if not even more throughout the day. I am praying it has nothing to do with anything neurological. Waiting to get those results from the CAT scan will seem like an eternity.
Thanks Sasha!
The doctor had suggested that I stagger my sleep meds throughout the night, take the melatonin at bedtime and the klonopin when I wake up at 2 am. It was working ok, but not great. Well, my husband suggested staggering the melatonin as well. I tried it last night and I actually slept most of the night! It could also be due to the fact that I am taking cough syrup with codeine for my sinus infection, but I'm hoping that once I'm off that that staggering the meds will still help!
The feeling is hard to discribe but its quite strange. When I look at certain objects such as trees, spears or anything pointy/sharp, I get this feeling within my eyes. This feeling forces me to look away from the object. I wouldnt call the feeling pain its more discomfort. Sounds really weird but I dont have a clue what it could be related too.
I'm 5 weeks preggo today and I started spotting last week when I went to the doctor (11/1) so due to a prior m/c, she put me on progesterone suppositories- 100mg once at bedtime. She said they might make me feel icky but so far I've been okay other than the sore bbs that started yesterday. Just curious if these were my normal symptoms of pregnancy or is it a late side effect of the progesterone? Any experience??
I have an irration throat cough, no small mucus comes up at the coughing times. I take meds for bedtime to sleep without coughing. Irration throat cough irrates to breathing or dry.
It's far more likely the result of your getting up out of a reclining position and walking to the bathroom allowing gravity and some coughing and swallowing to help you drain the fluid from your throat and esophagus away from your airway. Can't imagine any specific connection of coughing to the bladder.
I do pretty well during the day although I still sometime have coughing spells. Sometimes at bedtime I take 150 mg. Zantac to try control the acid at night. It doesn't always work and now I am having Nocturnal Acid Breakthrough once or twice a night, and I can't pinpoint anything I should or should not be eating. Most of my evening meals are very light. I have given up tomato products, tea, colas, onions, etc. Would 2 (150 mg.) tablets be more effective at bedtime?
