I generally have normal to low blood pressure and am worried that these drugs will lower my blood pressure even more causing me to feel lightheaded (which I already do sometimes) and perhaps even faint. I have a 6-yr-old daughter to take care of and can't afford to be incapacitated by dizziness. Is there an alternative to these drugs?
From the sound of it, though, her Orthostatic Intolerance and Syncope (lightheadedness, low blood pressure, and passing out when she stands up) are medication-induced so the first thing to do is to talk to her doctors about these medications and the side-effects they're causing and see if there are any other options.
I just read up on Coreg - - beta blocker, and on low blood pressure. Beta blockers can cause heart damage which then can cause low pulse - hense low blood pressure. He has 5 stents and is on crestor & plavix. He's also taking a multi vitamin & Omega 3 supplement. Can he stop taking the Coreg? Is there an alternative? He's strong and very active - physicallty & sexually. He's also taking Co Enzyme Q-10.
The reduction in blood pressure is benefical and should not be any concern. My doctor wants blood pressure as low as possible without any side effects such feeling faint, dizzy, etc. An erradic heart rate at rest can be a problem (coreg should correct that problem). Many doctors discontinue prescribing plavix as there is a higher risk of excessive bleeding.

My electrophysiolgist/cardiologist prescribed Coreg and Lisinopril for my condition. I have episodes of ventricular tachycardia, apparently brought on by a focal wall abnormality in my left ventricle. I also have atrial fibrillation. I have an ICD as well. When I mention to other doctors that I take these medications, they insist I must have high blood pressure. I don't have high blood pressure and never have.
I take coreg with lisinopril to lower heart rate and lower blood pressure. Coreg can lower the HR, and as you know, I very slow heart rate can cause clots, and with MVR an individual is more vulnerable.
My docotor wants my BP as low as possible without side effects such as passing out!. And I believe the lowest possible BP is generally the goal as you stated. But coreg also effects the heart rate, so that enters the equation for optimal dosage.
I am curious as to your opinion regarding the use of coreg for blood pressure control for a juvenile diabetic, with renal problems (37%) function. The coreg causes problems controlling the blood sugar in the patient, and it causes bouts of vomiting and loss of consciousness it also causes very low blood pressures, fatigue and shortness of breath.
Hi. The Doctors out me on the Beta Blocker and Ace Inhibitor last summer when my low EF was discovered on a routine ECG. We've repeatedly discussed my normally low blood pressure, prior to starting the medications and since I've begun taking them. I've also been on toprol and flecanaid with these same results. I'm told that the BB and ACE are needed for heart recovery and to help make it stronger. I'm on such a low dose of BB and my EP took me off lisinopril.
Why do you stop taking the meds?
What I think you need to do:
1. Always do as your doctor tell you to do regarding meds. It's possible your blood pressure is elevated due to stress and anxiety, and if you can't tolerate a high dosage of blood pressure meds, keep in touch with your doctor and get the dosage adjusted, but never stop without asking him first.
2. A blood pressure of 170/122 is for a young man highly uncommon.
He has me dropping to 12.5 of the Coreg and 50mg of the Tenormin twice a day for 4 days and then 6.25 Coreg and 50 Tenormin twice a day for 4 days, and then only the Tenormin 50 to 75 twice a day depending on BP numbers.
Any one have any knowledge or thoughts about this?
BTW I trust my Cardiologist but am nervous anytime I have to change meds!
Just so you know, on the maximal amount of Coreg and Lisinopril that your heart rate and blood pressure can handle, the heart muscle can get stronger and we can see the EF improve!!! I think you may have 15 years left to your heart but you need to be very careful and take all of your medications (never stop plavix again with all of the stents you have) as prescribed and continue exercising at least 30 min 3-4x per week.
My EF was in the 30's, and was slowly advanced to 25 mg Coreg twice a day, and 10 mg of Altace. My EF increased, but like you I had extreme fatigue issues, and I had several fainting episodes at night because of low blood pressure. The Coreg was reduced to 6.25 X 2 and the Altace reduced to 5mg, and I'm getting along fine.
Lisinopril and Carvedilol are blood pressure medications (lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor, Carvedilol is a beta blocker) and should not have any effect on your lipid profile. Both are important medications for those who have suffered a heart attack and undergone stenting. In addition to these medications, you should be on some sort of lipid medication (a "statin" such as atorvastatin, pravastatin, rosuvasatin, lovastatin, etc).
It is a combination of Coreg and Tropol XL, I believe. This gives all the benefits of Coreg and reduces the tiredness that people complain about. Our relatives in Europe use the medication and have energy to travel to US and all around the states. I am not sure what the name will be of the medication when it becomes available in the US.
Salmon, fish oil, and dark chocolate have been shown to raise HDL levels. Your level should be in the 50's if you can get it there.
Other than lowering your pulse and blood pressure, if you took Coreg but did not need it, could it cause other damage? What symptoms would you have? I am on Coreg as a trial to see if it fixes my chronic shortness of breath. I just wondered if it was safe to do so or if it could cause permanent damage if in fact I did not need it.
For a normal EF (55-75%) and lack thereof depends on the degree and location of heart muscle damage occurred from the '06 MI. Your sustained activities to me is an EF greater than the ESTIMATED 32% or your system has some super compensating factors. However, it is estimated 25% of the heart population has an EF below 29% (heart failure range) and don't realize they have a heart problem.
She was also given Coreg, Plavix and aspirin. Her Shortness of breath is much better but her BP is still low probably due to Coreg (90/60) and her pulse is almost always (100 - 125) depends on activity.
One thing i noticed is that her left arm is swollen, I'm not sure if this is normal after the surgery (cardiologist said it's no big deal) , it's getting better day after day but she still have a big mass in her elbow area.

Hi, there can be variations if the blood pressure is measured with different postures. Pain can cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure readings. If repeated recordings of blood pressure indicate low readings, then the medication dosage may need to be adjusted. As this can result in postural hypotension, a condition in which the peripheral arteries dilate, leading to pooling of blood in the peripheries.
After a lifetime of lower than average blood pressure (90/60) and virtually no headaches, in the last two months I have developed high BP and a constant headache. Doctor visit for headache found BP at 150/93. Coreg/20mg was prescribed.
After a week BP dipped very slightly, and Coreg/40mg was prescribed. Results were not much better.
The ache is “whole head” and in back of neck. It’s a little better in the morning but gets worse through the day, correlating with BP going as high as 161/90.
On the other hand, I decided to try the 10mg Coreg CR and it is not working. My blood pressure has gone from an average of 118/75 to an average of 130/80. Admittedly, that's still not bad, but it is kind of odd that it increased. Plus the coreg cr is 120 dollars for one month, I can't imagine how much the 20 mg costs. So it looks like I'll end up back on the metoprolol. Hopefully the tiredness will go away.
I was previously on 12.5 mg of Coreg 2X a day for high blood pressure. I am also taking 10mg of Lexapro a day for anxiety. This caused me to become very fatigued and my doctor attributed it to the Coreg so he switched me to 10mg Norvasc every day (after weaning off the Coreg for 3 days). This was 2 weeks ago and I'm still feeling the same fatigue. How long does Coreg stay in your system after you stop taking it?
now that my heart has healed, should I continue to remain taking the Coreg that I have taken for 13 years? Would it be better to stop now? I do continue to have high blood pressure and take Diovan and a diuretic, Spironolactone, in addtion to the Coreg. Again, my main question is...Should I continue with Coreg?
Yes, she checks her blood pressure. Its always on the low side, around 106/ 74 and 104/67 That's really low 95/50 for your blood pressure.
