Common Questions and Answers about Concussion in young athlete

concussion

Avatar m tn Hi, I've had two concussions in four months. One with loss of consciousness for a few minutes and the other without. I went into a major depression afterwards, two months in, my phyciatrist diagnosed me with frontal lobe disorder. It has mildly affected my speech and balance but is getting better. He told me at this point to get an mri the damage would be microscopic in size. What are your thoughts is this necessary or not?
Avatar n tn Circling can indicate a stroke, and since there was a head injury, it could mean there is bleeding somewhere in the brain or a bloodclot as a result of the injury that caused the concussion. Chances are, in a very young dog like this, as long as the problem is caught and managed there will be no serious permanent damage, but the circling at this stage of the game is definitely cause for concern. Please let us know what the vet says.
Avatar n tn Take your son to a cardiologist and ask for a referral to an Electrophysiologist (EP). Shortness of breath and chest pain should definitely be checked out in someone so young. Check out the SADS (Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome) website for info on conditions affecting the young. If asthma has been ruled out get another opinion as well.
Avatar f tn I am just wondering, what kind of things could cause VT in a young person with no other health problems except being born with hearing loss, and a young person who is an endurance athlete?
Avatar f tn It is abundantly clear that in some cases concussions may result in seizures. That is not a "theory". It is a medical fact. It doesn't require "discussion". But not all concussions result in a seizure. There can be varying degrees of damage depending on the severity off the blow, where the impact takes place, and from resultant swelling, and if there is a delay in seeking medical attention. A "concussion" is not a "concussion".
Avatar m tn It is possible to have post-concussion syndrome for months and even years after the incident. This condition is a complex disorder in which a combination of post-concussion symptoms like headaches, tinnitus and dizziness are experienced. There are no specific treatment for post-concussion syndrome but treatment for the individual symptoms you experience is made by your doctor. Regular follow-up with your doctor is highly recommended. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn I am curious to learn more about post concussion syndrome. In the past 4-5 years I have had 4 or 5 "mild" concussions and am starting to get worried. I received all of these from sports and have since pulled myself from such dangerous situations but I fear I am still dealing with the after effects of my reckless youth. After my last concussion I had extremely bad vertigo, memory loss, and headaches.
Avatar m tn m a volunteer EMT. In Jan 2008, I got a concussion w/minor cut (stitches) and went to the ER. When they checked my vitals, I had a fast heart rate. They gave me a few bags of saline since they figured I was dehydrated, and discharged me (the tachy remained). I didn't care at the time since it was probably due to the head injury.
Avatar m tn We have a lot in the media about Anabolic Steroids and teenagers who have abused them having no clue what they are doing. This has the unfortunate effect of a biased opinion whenever I try to get an honest answer. My question today graduates to pro hormone use, I hear from people it is always bad to take pro hormones as a younger athlete. As I understand it, when one injects testosterone (lets say Testosterone Enanthate) the body converts (with an enzyme) the excess testosterone into estrogen.
Avatar f tn It certainly sounds like a head injury to me. The good side of this is, she's young, and minor head injuries in young people can heal better than in adults. You need to have her see a head injury therapist. There are cognitive things she can do to improve her behaviors and memory. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn If you're an athlete with post-concussion syndrome, you may have heard about Sidney Crosby and his experiences. He went to the Carrick Institute. If you can't go see them (I don't know where you are located), maybe you can find a doctor on their find a doctor list - https://acnb.org/DoctorLocator.aspx It's hard to say if this was a setback, or something more. Are you seeing a neurologist? You mention a doctor, but didn't specify. Hang in there.
Avatar f tn Obviously it would have been don't take the antidepressant, but you can't go back and undo that. But the teen was put on it for a reason, and many people with mental illness get worse over time if they don't fix it in therapy or find a med that actually works, which is hard. As for the concussion, it wouldn't hurt, it seems to me, to find a neurologist who can test for post-concussion problems.
Avatar m tn Hello, my name is Dylan, I am 12, and new to this website. So, for the past few years, I haven't been feeling very well the second I get in a car. I have had this feeling ever since my concussion in 2011. My head just gets an unexplainable feeling, like my brain is just... numb? I don't get lightheaded or feel like I'm going to pass out, but I do feel like I'm going to throw up. I have done tons of research on it, but have not found anything.
2176823 tn?1337539347 If you are a hard core athlete, as in training vigorously every day, I know that some women will stop menstruating. If this does not describe you, I don't know why you would simply stop having periods and you should see your OB/GYN as soon as possible.
Avatar n tn Venticular Tachycardia or VT is the number one killer among young people especially athletes in the US today. This is what the media calls sudden death or sudden cardiac arrest. Take your boy to a Cardiologist as soon as possible. PLEASE!!!!!!!
Avatar f tn Each TBI or Concussion is unique and you are are only 2 weeks from the injury, you are young so the chances are you can be back to normal in few weeks. Good luck.

Avatar f tn Hannah is an extremely bright, creative, athletic and sweet young lady, who did not have any of these symptoms prior to her April 2011 concussion. We live in Ohio and are trying to find the best Chiari expert in our area. We will travel if necessary. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely.
Avatar f tn I have just recently turned 18 and I am an athlete. However, recently I have been feeling extremely hungry, I have lower back pain, tightness is my knees and I’d like to know the reason. I take naps after school and eat meals throughout the day as well. Could growth be a factor ?
Avatar f tn I am a concussion survivor. Could you get a concussion if your head stops suddenly from a fast movement? Yesterday I was in a hurry and running and pushed the door in front of me. It stopped abruptly which caused my body to stop too. Could this cause a concussion? I'm scared because I am recovering from a concussion already. Does it make me more prone to brain injury? Please, help me!
Avatar f tn First, don't get hung up on checking your pulse. You don't know enough to get useful information from that. Second, for an athlete, a HR in the 50s is just fine (in fact, in many endurance champions, it's waaaay lower than that). Third: everyone--everyone--gets skipped beats, but not everyone feels them. In general, they tend to occur when the heart rate is slow. (There are reasons for this, which you would learn in the first year of studying physiology.).
Avatar f tn Sounds like you might have a concussion. A concussion is a mild brain injury caused by a knock or blow to the head or a sudden change in motion. See a doctor just in case.
Avatar m tn I am a young 70 yo female with a history of concussion 2015. Having feeling of pressure in occipital area of my head for approx. 6 months. This occurs when I lay on my back or rest my head in the recliner putting pressure in that area and often interferes with sleep. I have no history of elevated B/P or migraines. Recent MRI without contrast revealed SVD with several punctate areas in the periventricular and subcortical white matter. My GP seems to think this is a normal progression for my age.
Avatar n tn ST segment elevation is usually attributed to impending infarction, but can also be due to pericarditis or vasospastic (variant) angina (chest pain). In some healthy young adults, a form of ST elevation can be normal. There are a number of non-cardiac conditions, medication, electrolyte imbalance, etc. that are benign that cause ST elevation as well. I agree with mammo you should consult with a doctor before any exercise regimen.
973741 tn?1342342773 Mom, I had this problem when I was young. I was never a formal athlete like your son, but when I was young we had to do physical fitness tests periodically. I played sports for fun a lot, but again, I wasn't a serious athlete -- no real talent. But I could run all day and play sports all day without any problem despite living in a place that was really hot, dry, and severely polluted. But when we had to run the 600, and that's a short race, I always got sick to my stomach afterwards.
251315 tn?1198196557 i Went to a neurologist and he dignosed me with Post concussion syndrom. i hit my head pretty good, 1 the whip lash (i cant remember if i hit it on anything in my car) but as i was exiting to see what he did i smacked it on the metal bar getting out and then when the paramedic arrived i was laying in my car as they got me out the car he was holding my neck up right and i smacked it again on the metal bar getting out the car again.
Avatar n tn On 3/16/10, my son (15 1/2) bent over to pick up a baseball & as he stood up & turned around was hit with an overthrown ball. He had an orbital fracture. His eye pressure after 1 1/2 months was finally down to 19 (60 was the highest) and inflammation is down. However, his pupil is still dilated, and ophthamologist feels that at this point, it is permanently blown.
Avatar n tn Hi Dr, I am a 27 year old male with a history of both athleticism and sedentary lifestyle (professional endurance athlete up to 21, and afterward, mostly sedentary after). I am 6'3", 220lb, with a BMI of 27.5 (overweight as per CDC website). Two years ago (age 25) I used a caffeine and ephedrine 'thermogenic' weight-loss drug for 6 weeks. As i recall, the dosage was apx 20mg ephedrine, 200mg caffeine. I did not intensify the dosage and have not used it since.
