Common Questions and Answers about Concussion in high school sports

concussion

Avatar n tn I sympathize with you and understand your situation very well, since I had suffered a few injuries myself, in my younger days as a soccer player (high school and college level). It was very frustrating, but that's unfortunately common in the world of sports.
Avatar n tn m older? Trust me when I was in high school I loved football with every ounce in my body, I loved to nail people as hard as I could, but now that I've quit playing I deeply regret ever playing, because now all I want to do is be able to grow old and enjoy my family. Hopefully God will bless me, I feel as if he already has in the sense that I decided not to play college football. I hope you make the right choice.
Avatar m tn I appreciate the concern, as well as the well informed answer, but it was not entirely their fault as I myself made several stupid decisions when dealing with this, I just wanted to know if my actions will affect me for the rest of my life.
Avatar n tn I am getting headaches every day at the same time. Could this be from the concussion? Should I have it checked out before I go back to school next week?
Avatar n tn As you know, a "Grade 1" concussion is the mildest category. That being said,m there is no such thing as a "harmless concussion", and in the final analysis Lacross is a meaningless activity. Missing a season is not worth a lifetime of problems. I am somewhat concerned he did not have an MRI, and insofar as school authorities are mandated to pick-up-the-bill, this non-invasive test should have been provided.
Avatar f tn I am by no means an expert, but I have heard plenty of stories of people with concussions having lasting effects. Did your son's doctor mention Post Concussion Syndrome? Perhaps your son's ability to absorb impacts to the head is compromised. Recent studies have shown that children who get multiple CT scans show higher rates of brain tumors later in life. The radiation from a CT scan is significant and should only be done when necessary, especially in children.
Avatar m tn I'm in highschool and during soccer i got a concussion, the doctors said my brain was fine in a cat scan but ever since I have had chronic migraines and headaches for a year now. I saw a neurologist and am on amitriptyline and zolmitriptan. It has reduced my headaches from everyday to four times a week and my migraines from twice a week to once a month. i found that also pushing myself through physical exercise helps too. I still cannot attend school though and am homeschooled as a result.
Avatar f tn It is abundantly clear that in some cases concussions may result in seizures. That is not a "theory". It is a medical fact. It doesn't require "discussion". But not all concussions result in a seizure. There can be varying degrees of damage depending on the severity off the blow, where the impact takes place, and from resultant swelling, and if there is a delay in seeking medical attention. A "concussion" is not a "concussion".
Avatar f tn We have a Blue Ribbon Public Montessori School here and I put Owen in the lottery - I hope he gets in as the school he goes to now after PK-4 has a very small and expensive K program! He is florishing in the program and he has great teachers. I hope to keep him in Montessori for as long as I can. I do not think you can go wrong with Montessori! Thanks again for your insights. I really appreciate it.
Avatar m tn His headache persisted for three days, on day 4 he had some visual disturbance, but no headache, we have him home, resting, no school, no sports. Is this type of visual disturbance a typical post concussion symptom ?
Avatar f tn Guess what guys.! I got a concussion. ): Done with football for the season and sports for the whole YEAR!!! Avatar f tn I suffered a concussion 4 months ago when I fell during a parade with my high school band. My mom took me to the ER and I was diagnosed with a concussion. I had a CT scan and nothing was out of the ordinary, and it seemed to just be a mild concussion. 4 months later, I'm still having issues. I'm a junior in high school and concentration and memory issues made me switch out of all of my honors classes into regular ones and drop both math and science completely.
163305 tn?1333668571 com/categories/hbot-concussion The concept is the use of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to treat concussion/sports injuries, which would be the same concept of using an oxygen chamber to treat fibromyalgia pain. There's a little boy who was injured in Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when a tree fell through the roof of their home, onto his head. His parents were experimenting with an oxygen chamber.
Avatar f tn Hello! I was just a month ago or so diagnosed with type 1 Chiari malformation, but the fact is that I'm 17 years old and still in high school with PE classes which are mandatory. I went to a neurologist but she wasn't one I would trust because all she basically said to me was which was written on my MRI results. I have an appointment with another neurologist but it's on 19th Feb. What I'm wondering is if there are things which I shouldn't be doing in PE classes?

Avatar f tn I had a severe concussion and was out of sports for a whole year in high school because I had persistent symptoms like dizziness and headaches. You may be at risk for something like an aneurysm, clot, hemorrhage so play it safe and go to your Dr.
Avatar n tn I have son in High school as freshmen. He has been an average student in middle school, but now he is failing his grade in spite of us spending lot of time teaching him in home. He does not take responsibility himself, and needs to be pushed always to do things at home How do I find what is wrong with him? or Has ADD? What type of doctors I should take him too?
Avatar m tn My freshman and sophomore year of high school I played football and during that time my guess is that I received 3 or 4 undiagnosed concussions and maybe 25-30 sub-concussive hits to the head including my time of playing basketball. The somewhat recent news of the amount of American football players being diagnosed with CTE after their deaths has me terrified. Some players are even as young as me have been diagnosed after their brains were examined postmortem examination.
Avatar m tn A doctor generally looks for focal neurological or generalized neurological symptoms that would show there is a pressure on brain somewhere. In absence of these symptoms and based on the history a diagnosis of concussion is given. If concussion is severe, and there is underlying brain injury, then yes, even death can occur. Hope this helps! Take care!
Avatar f tn Strenuous body building sure would have made things worse. When it comes to Head Injury medicine is still in dark ages even though lot of progress made in the past few decades.
Avatar m tn I had a mild Traumatic Brain Injury and severe concussion 1 year 8 months ago. Post Concussion Syndrome followed after that and that is what probably your cousin's doctor call it. I have several symptoms and the worst is dizziness, heavy headed and fatigue. Been to many therapies, meds and no help. Right now I am trying some PT for my neck which seems to be causing my dizziness. I don't know and no one knows including specialists. It is tough to diagnose dizziness.
973741 tn?1342342773 Kids are under so much pressure these days. School is a lot harder it seems than when I attended high school. Kids have lots of options and tracks to take for studies. There's the inherent competition of sports, band (yes, kids are ranked in band too), social groups. It's a lot for kids to deal with. Tips for keeping yourself and your teenager sane during the high school years?
Avatar f tn Usually, such headaches and dizziness may result due to post-concussion syndrome and may last for weeks or months after the injury that caused from the injury of a fall, vehicle accident, or sports injury. In addition, patient may experience either migraine type or tension type headache. For treatment approach, first it is essential to get (MRI) done to detect the brain abnormalities after that injury.
Avatar f tn The headaches have gotten much better but I have had days when I can really feel the pressure. My high school friends and I have been planning a trip to a house we rented in the mountains for months now. If I still have occasional lingering headaches can I drink? Will drinking hurt my head further? Please help.
