Concussion and mouth guards

Common Questions and Answers about Concussion and mouth guards

concussion

Avatar n tn yes I have a plastic one made by my dentist it works great but it is too tight around my top teeth. It was uncomfortable at first and my mouth was getting dry, but once you get use to it, it works. My dentist states I clench my teeth and grind them when I sleep, but I think it is when I am at work I do it due to my job and stress on the job. LOL 50.00 is cheap, I think mine cost 250.00 or more from the dentist, I'll have to look back to be sure of the price from the dentist.
4405063 tn?1354071904 The dentist can make him a mouth guard to wear at night or you can buy one at the drug store. I would ask your pharmacist about them, I believe you put it in hot water and have him bite down with it in his mouth to make it fit his mouth. It won't be as good a fit as if the dentist had made it but hopefully it will do the job.Tooth grinding is common and he may outgrow it. Hope this helps.

Avatar m tn In the meantime, go to your nearest pharmacy and pick up one of those rubber mouth-guards (like football players use), and keep it in your mouth while you sleep, and if it's helping, leave it in during the day, too.
2094952 tn?1334015457 Thank you for your reply but, I have searched his mouth and teeth closely. He only pops his mouth or what ever he is doing once he settles in to go to sleep. It is a strange popping sound.
Avatar f tn I recently chipped one of my front teeth in my sleep and it has a further splinter from my bruxism. I also have intense TMJ and a couple of my teeth are flattening from this. My ortho said my teeth were fine and a mouth guard isnt necessary but I've been feeling like he isn't very good at his job.
Avatar m tn I was involve in a very bad car accident 02/10 and have no memory of the actual wreck. the hospital deemed I have a severe concussion and then also diagnosed me with Post Concussion Syndrome. I am currently also experiencing back and neck problems as well as getting a collarbone checked out for a possible fracture. My question is does coffee effect concussion and PCS recovery. And how long does recovery generally take.
Avatar n tn I have tried 2 different mouth guards that were bout OTC. the 1st one you heat and mold and it never stayed in place and it felt like I was sleeping with a football mouth guard in my mouth (Spent all night awake with it in and never did fall asleep) The 2nd one was differnt, it had these pads that orevented your mouth from closing all the way and was a lot thinner and flimsier. I liked the concept of this one, but same problem of not being able to fall asleep.
190673 tn?1259203266 The pain usually comes from the position of the jaw, and the muscles being in a tight position changing how the jaw and mouth anatomy sits, causing discomfort and occludes blood vessels. Like the song says, the ___ bone is connected to the ____ bone... we're all connected and when one thing is tight, usually the next thing down the line is tight. Go for a massage, it will do you good and take out any upper back/neck/shoulder tention you may have.
Avatar f tn Dam maby we should just invest in some night time mouth guards because man do my teeth hurt in thw morning
Avatar f tn Yes, I have been experiencing this for years. The teeth grinding gets so bad at times, I have literally destroyed four front teeth. I have weakened them so bad that one by one, in a relativily short period of time, I was left with stubs/fragments. I already use a CPAP for sleep apnea and a dental device along with a CPAP mask - too much hardware over my nose, mouth, in my mouth...Still working on this one with dentists. I also clench my teeth constantly. Jaws, neck become quite painful.
Avatar m tn Hello, just looking for some advice. 4 weeks ago I was playing football (soccer), and was heading a ball when I received a blow to the head - on my right temple. I had to come off. I was experiencing dizziness, headache, bad vision - so I was taken to A&E...diagnosed with concussion and sent home.
751397 tn?1367437548 My dentist told me b4 I went to the expense of getting a special guard for the TMJD to but one of the mouth guards in a sporting goods store...they also mold to ur mouth...and they do not cost as much...if it helps then u might consider having one made. Also , ur dentist can tell if u have it or not or if u r grinding ur teeth as was my case.
8101930 tn?1420001456 Also look in the babies mouth, inside cheeks and tongue, see if any white patches or spots are in there...If so it's thrush. Both you and baby would need to get treated. It's very common. If in fact it is a bad latch you can get nipple guards and it'll correct the problem.
Avatar m tn well hello all iv been dealing with hypo thyrid for 8 years and still cannot regulate me iv changed brands from unithroyd to levoxel and had bad palapations and almost ended up in a coma and the doctors could not figuer it out and in the emergency room when they put the iv in i felt a little better ( i was in a wheel chair thats how bad it was)i went home and looked at my meds and they changed brands without telling me i went back on unithroyd 88 and got better in 3 weeks but still have bad palp
Avatar n tn It gets worse at night since it is probably being bumped all night. I bought one of those moldable night guards and filed it down so it doesn't touch the swelling and basically just holds my jaws apart but it still doesn't work. This is going on almost 2 weeks and I think I am going to go nuts. I went to the dentist last week and he made it worse by poking around and inflaming it. I am at the end of my rope because there is no way for me to even close my mouth without disturbing it.
541694 tn?1254826867 I clinched my teeth at night when I wake up I have a headache and my jaw cracks when i yawn or eat. This is something i just started doing a year ago but don't know why. Mouth guards doesn't work. Does anyone have a cure.
Avatar f tn I have never been told that I have tmj, although I've thought that I have it, but apparently I clench my teeth. I have bite lines all along the inside of my mouth, on the inside of my cheeks and along the sides of my tongue - visible teeth indentations! I've tried nite guards but they don't work. Any other ideas of how to alleviate this? It isn't always bothersome, but sometimes it does cause some pain. Thanks for any input!!
Avatar f tn Hi, Trace, and welcome. I'm an oldtimer here, and I've gotten to know so many great members. We'll certainly help you if we can. Everyone has TMJ, since that stands for temporomandibular joint, the jaw hinges on both sides of our faces. TMJ disorder, though, is some malfunction of the joint, on one side or both. The overwhelming majority of TMJ disorder cases are caused by teeth grinding, especially during sleep.
Avatar f tn I know the symptoms I have are a part of the concussion but they are bad (bec I already have the chiari symptoms) and it has been since Friday and I still feel HORRIBLE! I see a chiari specialist at the end of the month but in the mean time could this hitting my head on the wall possibly made things worse? (I did not have a ct for the concussion, the dr. just diagnosed me by my symptoms and what happened).
Avatar f tn in fact I went yesterday because my teeth and around my mouth hurt so bad. Same story- they took xrays and checked them and was told it had to be from the nerve problem. I went to a TMJ specialist about 7 years ago and found out I had arthritic jaw joints and was fitted with a mouth guard that I would go in every once in a while for adjustment on it. It really seemed to help the TMJ but unfortunately I lost the splint a couple yrs ago and haven't gone back.
Avatar n tn Right side appears blocked. Salivary glands working on both sides. Lump in mouth is growing and is now around 3 cm and not uniform in shape. Intial tests CT Scan 2 weeks ago (available here :http://www.flickr.com/photos/kiwinky) show some sinus distortion. ENT "I have no idea what it is" Possibly jaw muscle caught up and inflamed however lump does not appear to behave like muscle. Awaiting biopsy and MRI in the coming few weeks.
Avatar m tn s been a year since his last concussion and he is making slow progress, but progress. Still has mood swings, ADD, and sleeplessness, but has made nice gains. He went on a flight to Scottland to visit a friend and seemed fine while in Scottland, but seemed to have regressed in symptoms when he returned home. Mood swings returned significantly and his choices and behaviors reflect significant impairment of executive function ability.
Avatar n tn t think of any reason this rash would occur (no known cause in medical journals), but I have noticed the rash appeared soon after soccer season and seems to have been located where the bottom of his shin guards in soccer rested on the shin. Internet research showed some connection between shin guards, urea-formaldehyde resin, and contact dermititis. Is it possible that Lichen Planus was contracted through the same resin?
Avatar f tn At times a subdural hematoma develops slowly and may be missed on the first MRI. Also concussion can cause persisting headaches and should be allowed to slowly subside before active sports are considered. Injury to neck, to jaw bone, and even eyes should be considered. Get his eye sight also checked. May be the headaches are because he needs spectacles. -Take care!
