Concussion and loss of smell

Common Questions and Answers about Concussion and loss of smell

concussion

Avatar m tn Delayed symptoms include depression, irritability, sleep disturbances, seizures, loss of smell etc. Injury to olfactory and lingual nerves of smell and taste could be a cause or it could be that nerves are in shock. Once swelling and contusion following the fall will subside some taste and smell may return. However, when this will happen is difficult to say. Your father should be shown to a neurologist once. Take care!
Avatar f tn After suffering a concussion April 17, 2008 I lost my sense of smell and taste. I was pushed off a 3 foot wall and knocked out for over a minute. I have had a CT scan and an MRI which show nothing wrong. But I still cannot smell or taste anything. Any suggestions?
Avatar n tn I fractured my skull Jan 2012 with bleeding, loss of consciousness all after a seizure. Two week later I lost my sense of taste and smell and later developed a bad taste/smell. Eating is NOT pleasant. I no longer enjoy pleasant scents. I only apply perfume I know smells good to me. I've lost 30 pounds simply because I can hardly stand the taste of food. It could be worse, I could have lost my eye sight or hearing. I try to look at it that way.
Avatar f tn Ice skating concussion to the back of the head, loss of smell, taste, and also ringing in ears. This is all terrible, but could be worse. Many say I am lucky to be alive and functioning. I just keep moving forward as best I can with my busy family. I still enjoy texture and temperatures of food. I'm eating totally healthy food that I ordinarily wouldn't care for.
1118437 tn?1259049741 What you have is probably delayed symptoms of concussion which include depression, irritability, sleep disturbances, seizures, loss of smell, altered smell etc. A doctor generally looks for focal neurological or generalized neurological symptoms that would show there is a pressure on brain somewhere. In absence of these symptoms and based on the history a diagnosis of concussion is given.
Avatar f tn t figure out the smell, hmmm, it is the manure from the cattle, whatever, that night cook pork chops and low and behold eat a piece of the chop, gross me out ,there is that smell/taste in my mouth, well that was out right away. Other times it is so frustrating Im angry and crying again. Over all this I have gained 40 pounds and not happy was a bubbly happy, working women and now NOT.
Avatar m tn Yes, a TBI can cause loss of taste and smell. This can be a part of concussion. If this is so, there is a chance of recovery once the effects of concussion wear off, which may take a few years at times. Also the loss of smell could be due to injury to the nose causing a blockage inside the nose. Hence an ENT consultation is a must to rule this out. The other possibility is injury to nerves or the center in the brain. Generally the taste goes away because of loss of smell.
Avatar n tn After concussion or impact such kind of symptoms like loss of smell or taste and other symptoms may be common due to extent of damaged part of brain and may remain symptomatic or progress in future. Although any sure success cure can not be assured in such cases, but symptomatic relief or it may decrease with period of time, physiotherapy, avoiding any triggering factors and life style modification help you in certain extent.

Hope this helps! Take care!
Avatar f tn If it is due to injury to nose internally then this may recover. The various tests carried out to detect the cause of loss of smell is CT scan of nasal sinuses, MRI of brain, allergy testing, and blood glucose levels. This is followed by quantitative smell test which helps identifies the degree of loss. You could take some multivitamin and iron pills, and highly seasoned food items to revive your taste sensation. However, this may not be successful.
Avatar f tn I have most of the symptoms you have especially dizziness, fatigueness, loss of smell and taste, ringing in the ears etc., I am mostly home bound and suffer all the time. Cannot handle stores, malls, crowd and so many other stuff considered normal. I also wondered if it is a PCS or anything else. Brain injury may aggravate other conditions we already have. Again I personally know some people who recovered completely after a severe brain injury.

Hence please get this assessed by a neurologist.
Avatar f tn My smell and taste also messed up and nothing smells the way is supposed to be. Medically they put this under Anosmia (loss of smell and taste). I wish some times it is gone altogether than go through nasty smells/taste. It makes me not want to smell or eat anything and I have to stuff my food most of the time. It is horrible and no one can understand unless you go through it. Your olfactory system/brain may be damaged and no one can predict the outcome.

Avatar f tn In absence of these symptoms and based on the history a diagnosis of concussion is given. Not all concussions need a CT scan immediately. Hence your doctor has asked you to wait and watch. A CT scan is a must for any type of head injury if you are above 65 years of age, for whiplash injuries, roadside accidents, persistent vomiting, seizures etc. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
604197 tn?1292305036 m 17 years of age and recently (2 months ago) had an accident that has resulted in the loss of my sense of smell and taste. I was at a lake, swinging on a rope into the water but lost my grip and wnet head first down a cliff of rocks and roots. I landed in the water but had hit the back of my head (near the crown, at the top) splitting my head open and fracturing my skull (3-4 inches).
Avatar n tn m a little nervous about this and just wanted to know the general odds or percentages when you have a concussion and your smell/taste and hearing come back. Thank you.
Avatar f tn This topic has not been researched extensively. There is a dearth of evidence that shows how and why concussion can produce hyperosmia. How is his/her sleep now? Have you got any diagnosis for them?
Avatar m tn Unresolved within a limited window, such swelling can lead to the death of brain cells and parts of the brain such as the pituitary and hypothalamus. The time to death of the cells is referred to as the warm ischemic time. There is no evidence whatsoever that a concussion will make anyone smarter. There may or may not be a degradtion in your cognition, memory and reasoning. The human brain is very resilient.
Avatar n tn d. Most people lose memories just before the incident of concussion or loss of consciousness because the event that results in them losing consciousness - the punch to the head etc - interrupts how the brain stores memories. The brain needs to pay attention to something, hold it in short term memory, link it to meaningful past experiences and then store it in long term memory to lay down a memory.
Avatar f tn Hi All 8 weeks ago I had an accident, and fell down my stairs at home backwards - had a nasty bump to the head - suffered with headaches for days and still suffering dizzy spells even now and tingling in my left hand - had a head scan - normal , but complete loss of smell and taste which bothers me the most - only able to sense sweet/sour/bitter on my tongue, but no flavours.
Avatar f tn A distortion of smell acuity (dysosmia) is known to occur after head injuries(Sometimes much later). This is associated with Zinc deficiency. Regards.
Avatar n tn Again, there are probably videos and interviews with fellow sufferers who can provide you with your answers. I remember one interview with a chef who had it and lost his sense of smell and taste and it hasn't come back yet, but he is undergoing a kind of occupational therapy to try and either recover it or learn to smell and taste in other ways.
