Avatar m tn My neuroligist told me it could have been caused by a concussion incurred decades earlier and it was exacerbated by the bacteria in my bloodstream. Thinking back decades earlier, I remember a head concussion on the right side of my forehead. I have very little cognitive function loss and my neuro tels me that iQ is rarely affected with the type of TBI I experienced. I have short term memory issues and depression diagnosed as PTSD.
Avatar n tn His handwriting is very poor and his fine motor skills are very poor. The school did more testing this last school year and found that his IQ is 62. I know his sister (from another mother) has Asperger syndrome. Can this be something that is hereditary? I feel that there is more going on with my son than just ADHD and a low IQ.

Avatar m tn s been a year since his last concussion and he is making slow progress, but progress. Still has mood swings, ADD, and sleeplessness, but has made nice gains. He went on a flight to Scottland to visit a friend and seemed fine while in Scottland, but seemed to have regressed in symptoms when he returned home. Mood swings returned significantly and his choices and behaviors reflect significant impairment of executive function ability.
Avatar f tn At times a subdural hematoma develops slowly and may be missed on the first MRI. Also concussion can cause persisting headaches and should be allowed to slowly subside before active sports are considered. Injury to neck, to jaw bone, and even eyes should be considered. Get his eye sight also checked. May be the headaches are because he needs spectacles. -Take care!
Avatar f tn The impact of the ball caused the concussion, and the shape of his pupil is now oval. I took him to a pediatric opthamologist who did a thorough exam. He said there is no lasting damage other than the shape of the pupil, but he needed glasses. When he "recovered" from the concussion three weeks later, he tried to go back to baseball but could no longer judge the speed and distance of the ball. He had to quit. He has been moody and pesting ever since the concussion.

Avatar m tn The psychologist also told us that she does not think he has a learning disability and that the slow development is a result of the low IQ. This was very upsetting as both my wife and I did well in school and of course want our son to his best. He also has a special needs sister who is profoundly disabled and we are doing all we can to provide all the support we can including a tutor on weekend for one hour as well as private speech therapist twice a week.
Avatar n tn If the boy is raised in a superior stimulating environment, and has access to great education and parents who strive for excellence, the child should show a higher IQ on a test than a child of the same actual intelligence who has not had such a rich environment. So a child in a high achieving home should test at 115 or so, and a child in a home where he hasn't been exposed to stimulating education might test at 95, but both have the same intelligence.

Avatar m tn If a child scores high on such a test then there is no doubt that he is intelligent. If he scores poorly this can be for a number of reasons. The most obvious is mental retardation, but there are other factors. I am reminded of the old IQ test. In the 30's and 40's northerners scored an average of 110 and southerners 90. Since there was no intelligence difference between the two populations, then the test itself was deficient.
Avatar m tn My concussion occurred 37 days ago when I slipped and fell backwards hitting the back of my head on a turf surface. In terms of the concussion recovery, I've been working with a concussion therapist to employ the practices of slowly getting back into activities without provoking symptoms. Unfortunately, I haven't seen much progress and may even have my symptoms come on earlier. I believe that this is related to sleep and neck issues that began about 18-20 days into the recovery.
Avatar f tn Given the list of issues (attention, language, ASD and low motivation) my son has, has the school administered the right IQ test ? 2. Can IQ drop so significantly? 3. Are there alternate IQ tests for kids with ASD and ADHD? Also, Should I just take the IQ test results with a grain of salt and continue working with him as usual? My only worry is that his already low bar at school will be lowered even more.
Avatar m tn A doctor generally looks for focal neurological or generalized neurological symptoms that would show there is a pressure on brain somewhere. In absence of these symptoms and based on the history a diagnosis of concussion is given. If concussion is severe, and there is underlying brain injury, then yes, even death can occur. Hope this helps! Take care!
