Common Questions and Answers about Concussion and epilepsy

concussion

Avatar m tn I have been to three Neurologist and they think it is due to the concussion, but lean towards epilepsy. My daughter has had three cat scans, two eeg's and an MRI.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed years ago with Complex Partial Seizure and have had Epilepsy in some form or another since 1975. I started having the symptoms of Frontal Lobe Siezures about 6 months after my first accident. I was struck over the head with an Inch thick beer mug with enough pressure to give me a small skull fracture and 3 inch laceration cut on top of my head in Germany. Six months later I started having siezures.
Avatar f tn My Daughter is 17 and got a concussion almost a year ago. She starting passing out 5 days later. She passes about 5 days a week with no warning or symptoms beforehand. She also has lots of nausea, dizzyness, fatigue, headaches, loss of appetite, and sometimes shaky hands. We have had multiple MRI's, MRA, CT scans, full cardio work ups several times including tilt table tests, heart monitor, stress test, ultra sounds of kidneys, bladder and ovaries, blood work. All coming back normal.
Avatar m tn I know that it can happen. I'm not sure if you did, you're best bet is to ask a doctor.
Avatar f tn This could be due to a smell getting trapped by nasal polyps or tumors. Sinusitis with post nasal drip can cause both a phantom smell and nausea and this should be investigated first by an ENT. Since it can be something serious, you should be seen by a psychiatrist, ENT specialist and a neurologist. Take care!
1100598 tn?1413127426 Can you elaborate on your concussion? It is good that epilepsy was ruled out from the differentials. We can also consider post-traumatic headache since this condition share many clinical symptoms with primary headaches such as your migraine. There is also confusion, headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, memory or concentration problems, sensitivity to light and noise, irritability and sleep disturbances. Continue with your medications and do update us with your neuro consult.
423251 tn?1308955333 I am also on Tegretol due to mild epilepsy and almost a year ago I had a head injury which caused a grand mal seizure and concussion! With the information I've given .. can someone PLEASE help me on this! These tics and the drooling is getting bad and it's scaring the tar out of me! Thank you, Shannon C.
Avatar f tn I had absence seizures and a few grand mals for about twenty years. I had brain surgery six years ago to treat this. Since then, I haven't had any 'normal' seizures. However, my EEG is still abnormal and when it is showing seizure-like activity, I have a bad headache. I tried various medications for my seizures over the years and they just made it to where I was really out of it and still having some seizures. That is why I asked about and went ahead with the surgery.
Avatar n tn There are a couple of practical things emergency staff do when assessing the degree of head trauma a person has had following concussion - one is called GSC scale - where they ask a series of questions that reveal how orientated you are - goes up to 15. &/15 is severe, above 13 is mild and the middle scores are moderate. They usually do this asap after losing consciousness and then repeat it until you have no problems with the answers.
Avatar n tn Hi, Thank you for your question. Usually, such headaches, memory loss and dizziness may result due to post-concussion syndrome and may last for weeks or months after the injury that caused from the injury of a fall, vehicle accident, or sports injury. In addition, patient may experience either migraine type or tension type headache. For treatment approach, first it is essential to get (MRI) done to detect the brain abnormalities after that injury.
Avatar f tn it is much more common in people who have had severe or penetrating injuries. Most cases of epilepsy appear right after the accident or within the first year, and become less likely with increased time following the accident.
Avatar m tn They were not sure if it was meningitis or epilepsy but the doctors said it had to be considered and treated as epilepsy due to having multiple seizures. I was eventually placed on Zonegran(200mg) daily and only took the medicine for about 4 months. I stopped cold turkey after that and havent taken it since. Do you think i actually have epilepsy and can anything still happen after being off of it for 4 years now?
Avatar f tn Thank you, My last concussion i got elbowed in the mouth really hard and got pain in the back of my head. I went through the normal concussion symtoms; groggy, lightheaded, dizzy, headaches, depression, etc. and now the only one that is left is the pressure feeling. I wouldnt say its frontal, its just slighlty more frontal than the cent er of my head. idk if that makes sense or not. I got n MRI and it showed nothing significant, and I am getting aother one soon. Ill keep you posted.
Avatar m tn I was involve in a very bad car accident 02/10 and have no memory of the actual wreck. the hospital deemed I have a severe concussion and then also diagnosed me with Post Concussion Syndrome. I am currently also experiencing back and neck problems as well as getting a collarbone checked out for a possible fracture. My question is does coffee effect concussion and PCS recovery. And how long does recovery generally take.
Avatar n tn If it is epilepsy, just know that a LOT of the geniuses we can name today had epilepsy. Tons of healthy and happy people have it and lead fulfilling lives. In most cases it need not be a life limiting factor. Not at all. I do apologize for the length of this response, and I truly hope things go smoothly for the little one and for you as well.
Avatar f tn He played high school and college football and substained a concussion playing football while in 10th grade. He also broke his ankle playing college footbal which resulted in surgery and a metal plate was fused to his bones to repair his broken ankle. ER doctors think he had a seizure @ the wheel of the car. I am totally uninformed, am not a doctor and don't think he has eplipesy or seizures. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Avatar n tn The last time I woke up several minutes later, choking on vomit and lying in a large pool of blood with a concussion, broken nose and smashed face. I started on my knees and ended up across the room. This has to be more than vasovagal syncope. It has become a life threatening condition. I have never fainted otherwise. The vomiting is simply viral or mild food poisoning and I'm usually not that sick. Not even light headed before it happens.
Avatar f tn I started having a nervous breakdown in July. By the middle of August I had my first seizure and suffured a concussion from the fall. A month later I had another one and a very stupid Dr decided without talking to my Dr or checking my blood that it was due to drugs and put me into detox for 3 days. The day after I got out I had another seizure. This time the Dr. on call had a brain and talked to my Dr. and checked my blood.
Avatar f tn I know the symptoms I have are a part of the concussion but they are bad (bec I already have the chiari symptoms) and it has been since Friday and I still feel HORRIBLE! I see a chiari specialist at the end of the month but in the mean time could this hitting my head on the wall possibly made things worse? (I did not have a ct for the concussion, the dr. just diagnosed me by my symptoms and what happened).
1561603 tn?1294921559 which is a type of minor epilepsy epilepsy is not a big problem..and it is not diagnosed easily....so if u went to adoctor ..mostly he would give u tonics and do some investigations...and all of them r not specific...and he will ask for follow up so let us say ...u will never ever get diagnosis of epilepsy ..until u get another attack withen 3 years from the last one...and already have roled out all other possible problems . .. ... so if um ur doctor ...
Avatar f tn My 6 mo old pom puppy had a fall about six weeks ago, mild concussion and three days later she was back to her normal diva self. Ironically this past week Ive noticed what appear to be seizures or "episodes." Not sure if there is a connection to the former, but she heads to the vet in a couple of hours and I am one worried Mommy. We had to put down our old man (beagle/mutt) a few years back - but he was having much more severe, age-related episodes.
Avatar f tn Medications, and other things can cause seizures, this is not the same as Epilepsy. Epilepsy is caused by an electrical discharge that can only be seen with an EEG. You still may be having symptoms of anxiety or you may be feeling the "aura" that many epilepsy sufferers experience just prior to a seizure. I know you don't want to have this, but it is easily controlled, much easier than anxiety. Take care.
Avatar m tn s been a year since his last concussion and he is making slow progress, but progress. Still has mood swings, ADD, and sleeplessness, but has made nice gains. He went on a flight to Scottland to visit a friend and seemed fine while in Scottland, but seemed to have regressed in symptoms when he returned home. Mood swings returned significantly and his choices and behaviors reflect significant impairment of executive function ability.
Avatar f tn At times a subdural hematoma develops slowly and may be missed on the first MRI. Also concussion can cause persisting headaches and should be allowed to slowly subside before active sports are considered. Injury to neck, to jaw bone, and even eyes should be considered. Get his eye sight also checked. May be the headaches are because he needs spectacles. -Take care!
Avatar f tn The impact of the ball caused the concussion, and the shape of his pupil is now oval. I took him to a pediatric opthamologist who did a thorough exam. He said there is no lasting damage other than the shape of the pupil, but he needed glasses. When he "recovered" from the concussion three weeks later, he tried to go back to baseball but could no longer judge the speed and distance of the ball. He had to quit. He has been moody and pesting ever since the concussion.
Avatar n tn TICS may be difficult to separate from other involuntary movements like epilepsy. She might have suffered from hysterital epilepsy. She needs a re-assurance and thorough counselling. In this, head nodding is very common example.
Avatar n tn Good Morning. My 14 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with seizure activity in the left side of her brain after having an EEG. She fainted twice in the spring and after several tests it was determined that she had hypoglycemia. We started feeding her more frequent smaller meals.
Avatar f tn For several weeks afterwards I had trouble with memory, which included recalling information that I knew before the concussion, such as phone numbers, as well as some trouble with short term memory issues. Also had headaches and nausea and vomiting for a couple of weeks. Today I have chronic insomnia from that concussion as well as what can be fairly significant trouble with attention and focus.
Avatar f tn Each brain injury is unique and try to get some one who can listen to you and may be a concussion specialist if you can. I am even considering Stem Cell Therapy for which I have to travel outside U.S.A. Keep me posted if you can.
