I had weight loss they put me in Zyprexa. I would see my GP because weight loss can be caused by other conditions.

My daughter is 6 years old, on concerta for ADHD and is losing weight. She has been on medications for adhd for over a year now. She was born at 35 weeks by c-section, hospitalized several times before age 2 for respiratory conditions. She has a congenital dislocation of her elbows, significantly more pronounced on left side, for which she is being monitored by Shriners hospital. No other significant medical history.

I advised her against it, saying diet and excersise are the best options, but she has a lot of trouble loosing weight, like most of my family. I am very worried that Concerta mixed with any weight loss medications can cause problems. Are my fears rational? Thanks.

Antidepressants don't usually make people gain weight, and definitely not the ones that people will prescribe you as your first few antidepressants. (Some people don't respond to some antidepressants, and have to try several). Weight gain is on the list of possible symptoms of pretty much every psychiatric medication out there, but then so is suicidal thoughts, and that doesn't happen to lots of people who take the drugs otherwise they wouldn't be called antidepressants.

I'm still confused about how long is too long to be on this medication and will the weight loss adventually stop or at least slow down? What is non-stimulant Strattera and how will it help my son?

I totally understand your concern with your son's weight loss on ADHD medicine. My 9 year old son has been on Concerta for three years and the first year and a half he was very thin. Now he is the right weight for his age and height. He is on 18mg. We tried him on the 27mg but it was too much. He was thin for that period of time, but he has jumped two grade levels ahead of his class in reading and has much better impulse control.

My doctor thinks we may try something else to counteract the fatigue side effects of Paxil, once I concerta is out of my system. Honestly, this experience with concerta has me thinking of to phasing antidepressants altogether. I should mention that asside 50mg of Paxil I am also taking 0.5 mg of risperidon. My 11 year old son is currently taking Dexadrine. He has slowly increased to 20 mg in the morning. His teacher and myself (my son too) have noticed a postitive change in his work output at school and during homework sessions. Two of the side effects are of great concern to me. My son can't sleep until well after 10:30 pm. (we are trying Melatonin, but haven't found the right dosage). The other side effect that is most troubling is the loss of appetite.

Vyvanse will not make your stomach shrink. A loss of appetite is normal. And of course, if you are not eating, your stomach will shrink a bit. And, I doubt that you are feeling more depressed because of the Vyvanse. You are feeling depressed because of you stopped the zoloft and because of your medical condition. Depression and anxiety are a very common co-disorders of ADHD and while V can help with some of the reasons for the depression. It doesn't happen overnight.

For example, when a person goes on a low carbohydrate diet they will lose weight very quickly, there will be fat loss and water loss. If you look at the word carbohydrate...the word hydrate is attached to the word. So our scale weights are intimately tied to our carbohydrate consumption. When someone loses 7 lbs in 7 days, it is physiologically impossible for that to be all fat. So how much of that is water, fat, muscle etc..

) I have heard that some antidepressants help you to gain weight. I have heard this mostly about effexor, seroquel and lexapro. However, I think it is individual. I take paxil and have not had any weight related issues with it. Just asking, but did you tell them at the weight loss clinic about the antidepressants and anxiety meds you were taking?. Discuss with MD that prescribed anti-depress/anxiety meds. I guess I am afraid of diet pills after the ruckus with Phen-phen. I was assured Redux was VERY safe--no adverse side effects I have since learned I have pul. Hypertension and 3 damaged heart valves.This causes depression when I think about it. I was a hospice nurse. I am on Wellbutrin among others.

I used it a few times early in tx, because I just couldn't eat and was losing weight rapidly. The beginning of tx was the worst for me, just felt like I had no control over my body or mind, then after maybe three months there began to be a pattern to my week, so emotionally I knew what to expect. That made it easier knowing the beginning of the week would be loss of appetite, etc. but at the end of the week I felt better and HUNGRY! lol.

Cymbalta is one of the more stimulating antidepressants so it's not surprising that you've lost weight. If you continue to lose weight at this rate though it would be a good idea to talk to your Dr.
