Concerta use in children

Common Questions and Answers about Concerta use in children

concerta

454366 tn?1211245301 The med I was given for that has a side effect of osteoporosis in the lumbar in long term use (Synthroid). I ended up with litium toxicity a few years back because diuretics will cause that. As you know caffine is a diuretic (soft drinks) - which most kiddo's I know tend to drink. I would not allow litium to be given to my child; not going through what I have with it. I have a son who is ADHD. I stopped giving him the Concerta that was prescribed to him.
Avatar n tn I want to take her off the atenolol to see if it would make a difference but the cardiologist said that she is in danger of morbid arrhythmia. She has 3-4 PACs in a row constantly. Is this really dangerous? I read that children often have PACs and is not dangerous.
Avatar f tn im on line just learning myself about this condition and would really like to know if there are support groups in my area.and if there are special classes for children to learn social skills.etc. i also have a 9 yr old with add.will my children be able to live a healthy normal life!must my AS child be on so many meds is it going to help! im just a scared mom new to this not knowing what the outcome is going to be. thanks!
Avatar m tn As far as I know, the only two are intuniv and concerta. They use different formulations. No clue which is better. I think it probably depends on the individual. Both do take a while to take effect (compared to a stimulant). If you google them, you will be able to see lots of anecdotal posts on how it worked for that poster or their children. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn I know there are a lot of children that have been told they have add or adhd and autism that where later told they have Seizures. And where on drugs for add and adhd. How many new the side effects of the drugs they where on could cause Seizures? And didn't find out about having Seizures until they where on these drugs like adderall and Concerta.
1110718 tn?1258435594 They took her off the concerta and left her on the abilify because they stated that the Concerta can make children be more aggresive and irritated and she does seem a little more laid back. But what should I do besides having her on meds and taking her a therapist? I do not know what the next step would be if this continues. I feel like I do not know what to do any more to help her.
Avatar m tn Will this make any difference? Also any information about schizophrenia in children would be helpful. I do not think it is severe in my son, but I am worried and am unsure of how to approach this.
Avatar f tn Some researchers are concerned that the use of drugs such as Ritalin in children and teens might interfere with normal brain development. Heart-related problems — ADD / ADHD stimulant medications have been found to cause sudden death in children and adults with heart conditions. The American Heart Association recommends that all individuals, including children, have a cardiac evaluation prior to starting a stimulant.
356518 tn?1322263642 I have seen to many horror stories on it. Including my own family memebers. My son is ADD and is on Concerta... Concerta is great... It is as close as you can get to ritalin and it not have the bad effects like ritalin. Maybe you should try it. It is expensive though. the 27mg dose is like 100 CDN a month. But works well.
1031310 tn?1259857386 Honestly, I think concerta is a way safer drug for CHILDREN in general who do not have reactions to concerta (and reactions to concerta are very rare). I would not make the same statement about adults... probably both are safe for adults (and reactions are rare). But for CHILDREN, concerta is probably the safer of the two UNLESS these sudden auditory hallucinations really are a result of the concerta and not a result of something weird that happened at a new "church"...
Avatar n tn She is on 36 mg of Concerta and she is 7 years old. She weighs 54 pounds. In the beginning of her treatment she was on 18mg but she recently got her tonsils out and lost quite a bit of weight. I feel maybe we need to back off to 18mg again. She takes her meds at 6am and by 6pm she is crying, irritable, argumentative. She's just miserable with herself. She hasn't complained of headaches. I will make an appointment with her doctor next week and hopefully get some help.
Avatar n tn Yes every medicine has side effects. But know days in the US the doctor tell you not to give your children pain killers unless you have to and cough medicine is not to be used. But they give children these drugs that have all these really have bad side effects . they shouldn't be given them anything and us parents should be say know to them and asking them to find another way to treat them. Also they should check for other things that are going on beside add or adhd.
Avatar n tn We got over hurdles by therapy, putting him in extracurrricular activites. He is now on Concerta 54mg in the morning and takes 5mg of Ritalin in the afternoon. Concerta has been great, no side effects or anything. We had bad reactions with vyvvanse with my 6yr old - as in hallucinations big time. They are both on Concerta actually. keep in mind the medication is not for ODD - there is no medication for that. They give the medication for ADD or ADHD, which mine have.
Avatar f tn No one knows why stimulants cause these problems in some children and adults. But often it’s helpful if the patient eats something before taking the pill. If the problem persists, it may be necessary to try a non-stimulant medication.
Avatar f tn Parents of ADD ADHD children know that the medications used to treat their ADHD children have side effects. Most side effects of drugs like Ritalin or Concerta can be eliminated by proper medical management. However, one of the most difficult problems that these medications cause is sleep disturbances. It is very common for an ADD ADHD child who is on medication to have difficulty falling asleep at night.
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
Avatar f tn s harder than anyone else in her class. Our daughter has been on concerta 36mg now for 3months, it has made a difference, she is talking better, obviously the medication is helping her thinking, DOWN is she can't get to sleep at night, did try a lower dose of Concerta first but didn't help much, the 36mg dose is what she needs, we give her melatonin to help her sleep at night, (natural medication for sleep), the melatonin helps but still hard for her to get off to sleep.
Avatar f tn My 9 year old son has been on Concerta for about 3 years now and I am concerned whether it is true or a myth that ADD meds can stunt growth or slow down puberty process. Does anyone happen to know?
Avatar f tn Why is my 'shrink' trying to treat my Adult ADD with Bubropion HCL SR (100mg tab 2X a day)? Is this the right med for me? Good grief...it didn't even cut out my smoking. Both of my adult children are on Adderall and are doing fine. My doc keeps telling me that Concerta & Adderall are 'too addictive' ... what the heck ... I am not looking to get high or anything ... I just want to be able to have a med to make my ADD manageable.
Avatar f tn I have child that was also on Concerta 36. There are two types of this medication. Concerta and Concerta CR which is controller release, I believe it was called. However, I found that concerta is not a very effective drug for dealing with ADHD. You might want to have the school give her the second dose at 1pm at school, this way it will avoid the medicine lapsing while she is at school.
Avatar f tn diagnosed a few days ago with ADD(no hyperactivity) amongst other things and am taking concerta...36 mg 1 to 2 times a day...seems to be a life saver so far but am uninsured, just getting back on my feet after a nasty divorce and losing everything but my children (Thank God). It is SOOO expensive. I have 3 children (out of 5) also diagnosed which prompted me to get checked..Anyone take Strattera with good results...
Avatar f tn I agree with you sonyaincanada my son has been on concerta for 2 months he has been blinking and squinting a lot - I was told they are actually ticks. I am so angry at the moment that I was stupid enough to give Concerta to my son because his grade one teacher had troubles keeping him focussed. I will not be giving him anymore meds for ADD. If the school system has issues then they need to deal with it.
Avatar n tn I have heard many times what you are both saying about your children and being on Concerta. and I want you to both do this for your child . Get them an EEG and don't take no form your childrens Doctors. I know this because my son started to have seizures once he was on these drugs and it could be from the drugs or because he never had ADD OR ADHD it was Seizures witch can look like ADD OR ADHD OR BOTH. And also please read and also take a look at these two sites below. http://www.drugs.
