Concerta for bipolar disorder

Common Questions and Answers about Concerta for bipolar disorder

concerta

Avatar f tn If indeed he displays juvenile onset bipolar disorder he will require some medication apart from Concerta and it may be that a medication like Concerta could worsen his behavior. If he displays ADHD and no other emotional disorder, psychostimulant medications like Concerta could be fine. Second, he may require a specialized educational setting, and it's worth discussing with the school officials what options are open to him. Has he been evaluated in the school system?
Avatar f tn Methylphenidate may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Concerta should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Concerta?
207227 tn?1271416978 s history there is high risk for substance abuse and Concerta is similar in structure to cocaine. I do not want to give her meds if this is all hormonally related. She sees a counselor and the counselor does not see any behavior in her history that suggests either disorder. I am very confused, frustrated, out of money and would like some opinions/advice. Help? Any ideas greatly appreciated.
565294 tn?1216433315 Hi, my son is 10 and he was on every single kind of medication out there for ADHD and responded to none so I took him off and he is getting an assessment done (As I have Bipolar disorder). He was worse on the pills than off....mood wise. But he lost a ton of weight....he was always being called chubby before he started concerta and adderall....now everyone is worried he is too thin.....so yes it does suppress the appetite.
Avatar f tn They left me on my concerta, gave me a script for atarax for anxiety, zoloft for depression and said because my diagnosis was complex, he would research the best med...lithium....depakote...etc. to address the bipolar issue next visit. I am almost 50. Have enjoyed a very successful career in real estate (he attributes to years of hypermania..saying that if channeled correctly, the upside of bipolar can be very productive) Is he right? I did not experience my depression...
13415927 tn?1430701518 but i am bipolar and have very bad anxiety. concerta works very well for my ADD but not for my anxiety, is there a better way to get the best of both worlds?
575214 tn?1218040360 That's a fair amount of medication for a child. He may be reacting to the Concerta. That I'm not sure. Depakoate is a good mood stabilizer. But he's on two antipsychotic as well (Seroquel, Abilify). I have schizoaffective disorder and generally did not need more than one antipsychotic. Did they diagnose any form of psychosis in him? Benzotropine is a side effect pill.
Avatar n tn My diagnoses are as follows, Anxiety Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Inattentive Type, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Affective Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I'm 71.5 inches tall and weigh 155-168 lbs, I'm white. I didn't before but now I will periodically hit my vapes, once nicotine the other thc.
Avatar m tn If you are not already on one they will also probably add a mood stabilizer. It is important for people with bipolar disorder to be on a mood stabilizer while taking antidepressants. Sometimes doctors have to adjust your medication as to which way you are going, up (manic) or down (depressed). When manic they may increase your downers, and when depressed they may increase your upers to help stabilize you.

Avatar f tn I am a 40 year old female with ADD and Bilor Disorder. I take Abilfy, Topomax, Wellbutrin and Concerta. I go to the gym 3x week and try to watch what I eat. I am always tired!!!! Any suggesstions?
207227 tn?1271416978 s history there is high risk for substance abuse and Concerta is similar in structure to cocaine. I do not want to give her meds if this is all hormonally related. She sees a counselor and the counselor does not see any behavior in her history that suggests either disorder. I have noticed a new symptom within the past three evenings as well. She has been humming, talking nonstop. Her mouth has been going all the time. I can tell her to stop and she is right back at doing it again.
Avatar m tn It is rare, but some people have a pre-disposition to bipolar disorder/manic depression, and somehow the Ritalin triggered this in me. I have a large family history of mentally interesting individuals and one of my parents is Bipolar, but mildly.
Avatar f tn ritalin, restpordol(sp???), Concerta, and clonodine (help him sleep) but they work for just a while. He can be perfectly fine one minute and extremely mad over something so small the next.... not to mention that he runs full charge all day. Anyway, he has been getting a lot more aggressive here lately for no apparent reason. I mean nothing has changed in our home. His grandmother watches him in the afternoon while I work and then he is with me the rest of the day.
414608 tn?1221754268 I have 5 year old a child who has always had behavior problems since he was 2. He has been put out of several daycares and the behavior started out with hitting and biting other kids, then it went to not listening to adults and running and hiding from them. When he started Pre-K last year, he did fine for the 1st semester with no problems, then things went downhill from there. he would thow things in the classroom and have tantrums frequently.
Avatar f tn Hello all! I have had attention problems since icould remember. Im 24 now. But only in the year or so I've realized that it has actually caused a lot of problems study wise for me. I feel constantly bored or loos interest in the smallest tasks and tend not to sleep allot because it feels like I can't switch the conversations off in my head. I only really realized that my behavior was a bit odd, when my friend kept telling me that I walk around and interrupt allot of people in class.
454366 tn?1211245301 Have you spoken to your doctor about him possibly having something else besides the Bipolar disease? I know it's hard to think of something besides what the doctor's already given him but if the medication isn't doing what it's suppose to do, there may be another underlying problem that needs to be dealt with.
1768088 tn?1409087815 Started treating right before she turned 5. She has been on Concerta since she was 5. Started at 18 mg and ever so often had to increase. She's been on 54 mg a day for at least the past 3 years or so. Well lately we noticed It's not working as well as it once was. She also takes Focalin 10 mg in the afternoon when needed. The concerta is wearing off in 5-6 hrs and when she takes the focalin in the pm u can't even tell she's taken anything.
Avatar f tn College students take them for a boost when cramming for exams or pulling all-nighters. Others abuse stimulant meds for their weight-loss properties. If your child is taking stimulants, make sure he or she isn’t sharing the pills or selling them. 1. Adderall 2. Concerta 3. Ritalin 4. Vyvanse 5. Strattera (do not use this, there is a warning on the label for suicidal thoughts) 6. focalin 7. Dexedrine Their may be other but these are the most popular ones used.
Avatar f tn We now switched him to concerta (lasts longer than focalin)...and added Prozac. Teacher really likes the results at school. However...evenings are hectic. He becomes very silly and immature. Often displaying autistic like behaviors--flapping hands, grunting, weird noises etc. Demeanor is relatively happy and giggly....Before just on ADHD meds...the withdrawal he was very angry and aggressive. He takes clonodine to sleep. But is very amped up at night. Could this be a side effect?
Avatar f tn That being said, however, meds do not do all th work. In intensive group therapy for bipolar disorder I learned that medications do 40-60% of the work, and the other 40-60% is up to us to take control of. Good luck.
Avatar n tn There have been some occasions wih us that he has began to act out but for the most part, his father is abe to control him by talking to him and I have been able to do the same. For the 2 years, he has been on the same meds, concerta 54mg bid, welbutrin SR 150 bid, depakote 500mg in am and 1000mg in pm and zyprexa zyda 10mg, within the last 3 months methylphenidate 10mg was added to his regimen for problems his mother feels like he is having at home.
Avatar m tn He was first prescribed concerta. He did very well for about two weeks and then started to act very violent aggressive and angry. The doctor doubled the dose and the anger and aggression etc. became worse. That was when the doctor diagnosed Bipolar and took him off stimulant and put him on Resperidone / mood stabilizer. He has been on resperidone for 11/2 week showing only ADHD and ODD symptoms. He is driving us crazy but not showing any signs of anger or aggression.
2196504 tn?1351392195 I also have a son who is now 27 that has ADHD and bipolar. Have you had him tested for Bi-polar? ADHD does not cause aggression, bi-polar does. My son deals with his without meds. He works out with weights every day to give him the adrenaline he needs to bypass the moods and hyperness. I would suggest you get him weights to start out with. My son is now normal in every way as long as he works out.
Avatar f tn Just in case it is important, I have also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, OCD and anxiety (general/social). I also have fibromygia but I doubt that matters here. :/ Thank you for reading and I appreciate any responses. P.S. I apologize for any typing mistakes. I am on my phone and did not proof read this...
