Common Questions and Answers about Concerta and weight gain

concerta

Avatar f tn told me to take it at night before I went to bed and then I noticed weight gain from it and I stopped taking the meds all togther and lost the weight but felt horrible mentally and emotionally, so 6monts ago, I went back to the DR. and she put me back on lamictal 100 mg final dose, 25mg serquel at bedtime to sleep and 36mg of concerta a day and I feel great and have not gained any weight at all, actually seemed to have lost a few pounds and able to keep a lower weight. Maybe it is the abilify.

Avatar f tn I often worry about the lack of growth and weight gain in my son. He is 50lbs at 10yrs. He however, seems to be showing signs of puberty early.
Avatar f tn I prescribed60 mg of adderall but one week I had to take left over phentermine and 10mg adderall and my focusing was great and energy and I still do take 1/3 of phentermine a day.
558991 tn?1226060828 I advised her against it, saying diet and excersise are the best options, but she has a lot of trouble loosing weight, like most of my family. I am very worried that Concerta mixed with any weight loss medications can cause problems. Are my fears rational? Thanks.
Avatar m tn Yes when I was prescribed Depakoate I experienced some sedation and weight gain. I also found that it was more effective for mania than depression and I was told that aspect was not uncommon but each person responds differently to each medication.
Avatar n tn Which would make more sense then the Concerta being the problem. And Risperdal could be the reason for the weight gain too. Here is a link to the info I was looking at on Risperdal - http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Meds/Risperdal By the way, don't suddenly stop the Risperdal. You must sloooowly come off of it. Good luck!
Avatar n tn Doctor reduced dosage which DID NOT help episodes and seemed unconcerned. I took her off concerta and made appt psychologist. Again tested and diagnosed with ADHD recommended try straterra again. This time wanted to sleep all the time. Day and night. Couldn't function. Then back to adderall. Adderall has made life semi tolerable but constant "bickering" between us - so not really working. Over the last several years she has had significant weight gain not loss.
Avatar n tn side effects were big loss of appetite ended up in the bottom 10% for height and weight for his age, lost almost 3 kg in 8 months. developed tics, throat clearing and a dry cough every 30secs or so, some days worse than others, biting finger nails and ripping skin around nails really bad, became quite nervous and lost confidence in himself. at night around 6pm-7pm would rebound his behaviour was extreme hyper, loud and totally out of control, could not get him to sleep till 11pm-12pm.
Avatar f tn My son has been taking concerta for four years and has went up slightly with his weight gain over the years. He is 12 years old and is on 54 mg, and today he answered the door and then fell to the floor, started banging his head against the floor, and then got up walked over to the sofa and started watching tv. He had no recollection that he had even done that, and was completely conscious. Could this be due to the medicine?
Avatar m tn Doesn't make sense at all. Concerta is usually only once daily. and it doesn't come in 10 or 24 mg doses. Are you sure that it is concerta?
Avatar n tn In general, no - the dosage is not based on weight. However, perhaps your son's doctor is concerned about increasing the dosage because of the appetite-suppressing side effect, and if your son is too thin for his size, he may be concerned about that. Having said that, if the medication is not helping him, then something needs to be done. Continuing to give him medication that is not working is not a good idea.
982251 tn?1248781387 I am not a doctor, but my son was also on concerta, and that can be a side effect of that. We had success switching him to Straterra, out of everything he's tried that has the least side effects, and it's once a day, dosing is based on weight, and even adults take it who have adult add. Look up drug side effects for concerta. Maybe changing the medication might help, and it does take some time for the medication and there side effects to clear their system.
1240654 tn?1268317515 My first experience with Abilify was an abnormal one (so please do not take this too seriously, as it seems I was an exception), since it threw me into a manic state; however, my Psychiatrist has come to the conclusion that I'm just wired completely different. After being weaned off the stuff for about a week, my Psychiatrist put me back on it, but a fourth of what I was taking.

Avatar m tn 8years old} with ADHD who is 5 years old and weighs normal weight for his age and he was started on concerta last week and that was the nedication and 18mg was the dose hebwas prescribed. I also have a.d.d and have stronger medication than that. So you may want to speak to doctors about changing medication or for dose increase. Good luck.
Avatar f tn i find i can concentrate much better now and get on with alot of things i couldnt before, however, i get side effects from taking it, i lose my appeitie alot of the time so therefore i have very little control over my weight lose/gain, I also take Temazepam at night to try and help me sleep as that can sometimes be rather hard to wind down. this is also a side effect of Ritalin. i take a form of Ritalin called Concerta which is a 12 hour slow release.
Avatar n tn My son is 15 years old and for as long as I can remeber he has always been very unhappy & extremely angry. He's been in & out of therapy (counseling) since he was 4 years old. We had NEVER concidered medication until about 8 months ago. My son was tired of not being liked, feeling angry, sad and felt he needed help beyond just counseling.
565294 tn?1216433315 My 9 year old son has been on Concerta for three years and the first year and a half he was very thin. Now he is the right weight for his age and height. He is on 18mg. We tried him on the 27mg but it was too much. He was thin for that period of time, but he has jumped two grade levels ahead of his class in reading and has much better impulse control. He eats a good breakfast and eats like crazy between 5pm and 9pm.
969557 tn?1314370614 My son was on concerta and adderall and they both can cause seizures. I would ask doctor to you for an egg and make sure you are not having seizures.Witch is a side effect to concerta and can not be reversed .They can only give you medicine to try and control the seizures. I wish we had never put my son on these medicines.
Avatar n tn can my son age 5 take concerta 32mg and fish oil and evening primrose and if so what mg of the fish oil and how many mg for the primrose can he take a day
Avatar f tn Three weeks ago, the Psychiatrist added in Intuniv...OH MY GOSH...the Concerta and Intuniv were PERFECT....Great days at school and an amazing kid emerged...Then at the end of two weeks he developed a tic...This was so horrible...They were happening about 12 - 16 per minute. raised eyebrows, eyes rolling to back of the head, head tilt to the side and a humming sound. We called Psych. and Concerta was stopped. However a week later, the tics are still here...not as frequent...
Avatar f tn If he has been on the same level of concerta for the last 4 years and has had no weight gain in the last 4 years, then an increase would possibly not be necessary - unless it no longer was working for him. The maximum recommended dose for adults is 72 mgs per day (did you know this?). I guess my question is - is your feeling about your doctors recommendation based on your sons need or yours?
1756970 tn?1314376733 hi, concerta ,and stratara, and all the others my doc put me on didn't come close to adderall. focalin worked to but was costly. adderall leavels your brain, and lets you be yourself. the way your supose to be.
Avatar n tn The bar exam is on July 24th-26th, 2017. I have never taken Concerta everyday for this long before, and I know that daily use is not encouraged. However, I feel that taking it daily would allow me to prepare for the exam to the best of my ability. The amount of information I need to learn is substantial, as is the difference in my ability to study for long hours on and off the medicine.
Avatar f tn My daughter is 6 years old, on concerta for ADHD and is losing weight. She has been on medications for adhd for over a year now. She was born at 35 weeks by c-section, hospitalized several times before age 2 for respiratory conditions. She has a congenital dislocation of her elbows, significantly more pronounced on left side, for which she is being monitored by Shriners hospital. No other significant medical history.
Avatar m tn I have been taking Concerta for one year. This was to counteract the fatigue and sleepiness that I had been getting from taking Paxil for depression. Though Concertat was initially effective, it gradually became more of a detriment than help. It made me very irritable, unfocused, and moody. I have worked with my doctor to gradually phase concerta out from the 72m I was taking daily.
Avatar n tn We tried putting my 9 year old son (who has ADHD) on Concerta about a month ago and after about 4 days, he started frequently rolling his eyes involuntarily up and to the right. We took him off immediately, but the symptoms have persisted. I'm not sure if it was caused by the Concerta, as he'd previously been on it for a month about a year ago and did not display the eye rolling. Does anyone know if there is a correlation, and if this is something that will stop?
