Concerta and irritability

Common Questions and Answers about Concerta and irritability

concerta

Both my 7 year old and 10 year old daughters are on concerta. I like it. It is a gradual release form of ritalin and doesnt turn them into zombies. We make sure they have it every morning because if my 7 year old misses a day the first day back on it she doesnt eat hardly at all. But now that they have both been on it for some time they both eat regularly and are doing well. Their appetites are still a little bit curbed but at least they eat enough to be healthy and stay alive.
He started a weaning of the Concerta and wants it off in 3 weeks, and increased the Intuniv to 3 mg and kept Zoloft and Risperdal the same. My son has now started to have horrible motor tics again....is this common when weaning off a stimulant ? Also My son has gained at least 14 lbs in 2.
I have Adult ADD and was given Adderal which I took more often that prescribed and for the wrong reasons. Being off all meds, my ADD is back full force. I get so frustrated with the havoc it reeks on my life that it then causes severe depression. I went to my Dr. to talk about options. She is really pushing Vyvanse even though I told her I am an addict and one of my drugs of choice was Adderal which the Rehab says is actually "speed".
My 7 yr old son who is Asperger's, ADHD and has Sensory Integration issues has been greatly helped behaviorally by Risperidone (1.5 mg.day .5 given in the am, 1 mg at dinner) and Concerta (27mg recently up from 18mg) is now coming back with highly elevated prolactin levels (37). Our pediatrician recommended reducing the levels and re-testing in 6 months (to 1 mg over the day). His labs are otherwise normal.
what are withdrawl effects on children age 9year old female coming off risperidone? dosages was 0.5mg of rispiradone in the morning with 72 mg of concerta for ADHD. AND A 0.

It is unlikely that behavior this extreme can be brought on by the stimulant medication, though such medication can result in some depressive-like irritability and prickliness with some children (particularly in the latter phase of a dose). Re: the Adderall, it would make sense to start him on a long-acting preparation, such as Adderall XR, so he has to take it only once daily and he doesn't have the nuisance of one dose waning while he awaits the build up of the second dose.
I took Focalin Xr and it was basically cocaine, I was euphoric and then dropped to the floor with depression and agony 5. Concerta gave me a tic disorder that took years to fade away I need something to keep me going for at least 10 hours that hopefully won't have terrible mood side effects. Any ideas? Anything?????
Please list the known side effects of the medications Metadate, Concerta and other commonly used medications for children 5 years old who have PDD. By the way, I read on a pamphlet of Concerta that it should not be given to children under the age of 6. Do you know if it is commonly prescribed to 5 year old children? Please also indicate the side effects, short term + long term for using Ritalin. Another question that I have is about secretin. My son's secretin levels are below the normal range.
My son is 11 years old and has ADHD and Bipolar Disorder. He takes Lamictal and Vyvanse which seems to help alleviate his agitation and his irritability but his anger is SO intense. He doesn't lash out at people (he has 2 little sisters ages 5 and 3) but he pulls his hair and bangs his fists on the doors and walls and kicks his legs ~ it's like this anger sets in and just HAS to get out of him somehow . . . .
MY DAUGHTER HAS ADHD AND ODD, CONCERTA GAVE HER TICS AND FINALLY I FOUND A GREAT DOCTOR AND SHE TOOK HER OFF STIULANTS AND THEY ARE ALL GONE SHE IS NOW ON TENEX AND IS A NEW CHILD. SOMETIME IT IS JUST TRIAL AND ERA TILL YOU FIND THE RIGHT DRUG, AS YOU COULD SEE WITH MY DAUGHTER, AND BELIEVE ME WE TRIED ABOUT 10 OR MORE TILL WE GOT IT RIGHT.
He currently is on Concerta and is doing quite well on this medication. My problems are with my child in the mornings and late in the evening when the medicine has worn off and his hyperactivity is out of control. I have spoke with our Doctor (who is a Neurologist) about his behaviors and he had suggested Clinidine. We are not happy about putting him on another medication so I wanted to know if there are any other alternative methods.
Eggs, cheese, whole wheat toast and fresh fruit and this helps (not stops) the irritability and lack of consentration, but as I have read over and over, anything that helps the brain is a plus with any child. I think a combination of all things is required for a child with true ADHD and people in general. Meds are not going to be as effective if the child's diet is out of wack.
This is painful for me to write because the memories themselves are still open wounds, and after a year and a half of therapy, and finding out my therapist/counsel doesn't see eye to eye with me on the medication abuse I've been put through, I have now lost yet another therapist, and I have no one left in the medical field I feel I can connect to. I am refusing connection from all that I have been through because I just don't want to be in pain anymore. Apparently people don't understand.
Ritalin is a type of stimulant medication prescribed to treat ADHD, and it can result in irritability as a side effect, particularly as it wears off. It sounds like a 'second opinion' would be warranted to pinpoint the diagnosis and be sure your son is adequately treated. A possibility is that he displays ADHD alongside a mood disorder (depressive d/o; bipolar d/o).
In her biological father's history there is high risk for substance abuse and Concerta is similar in structure to cocaine. I do not want to give her meds if this is all hormonally related. She sees a counselor and the counselor does not see any behavior in her history that suggests either disorder. I am very confused, frustrated, out of money and would like some opinions/advice. Help? Any ideas greatly appreciated.
As with any new med, I would give it some time to adjust - try to be as patient as you can when she gets moody and know that it is nothing against you personally, just a side effect. If the mood swings and irritability continues after a few weeks, I would have her talk to her doctor because maybe her dose if not right.
Does anyone know of a stimulant besides Adderoll ,that could help me concentrate or a natural herb of any sort, something that will not increase heart rate and permanetly damage anything...?!? please and thanks ,you would be a life saviour! litteraly....
Symptoms of the serotonin syndrome may include mental status changes such as irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, and coma; autonomic dysfunction such as tachycardia, hyperthermia, diaphoresis, shivering, blood pressure lability, and mydriasis; neuromuscular abnormalities such as hyperreflexia, myoclonus, tremor, rigidity, and ataxia; and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
For me, exercise fights depression, regulates my weight, regulates my gastro health, it helps everything and to not be able to do it is so frustrating. Regarding the Concerta, I do have depression as well and have been on both the concerta and an antidepressant with good results. I just can't seem to organize and focus like I used to no matter what. The clutter in my office is an exact replica of the clutter in my mind and I just cannot stand it anymore.

feelings were largely tweaky anxiety, irritability and anger, and borderline psychosis. My senses of sight and hearing were distorted. I kept thinking I heard sounds or that sounds were different from how they really were, kept thinking I saw faces or forms popping up out of the corner of my eye. Everything startled me.
If any of us dares to say that she may be overmedicated - she gets angry and defensive. She said the Adderall has killed her appetite and her libido but because she likes how it makes her feel and how much she is able to accomplish - she will live with those side effects. She has lost weight in the 2 months that she has been taking Adderall. She is 5'3" and has gone from 125 lbs to 119 lbs.
