Hi, my nephew is 10 yrs old and he very smart and does excellent in school and sports and karate. He is very social in his comfortable environment, ie, school, at home, karate class, science club...In a new environment he is sometimes quiet and shy until he gets comfortable and opens up. It sounds to me as if your son is suffering from anxiety - perhaps "generalized anxiety" or "social anxiety" or maybe even OCD. Anxiety also tends to be co-morbid with depression and I also wonder if this might be a factor in your son's health.
