Avatar f tn Is it common for kids with apraxia to have behavior problems even when speech is improving and is it common for kids with appraxia to be misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder? I'm very concerned that we're going down the wrong path here, but this doctor is very determined to convince that the behavior is not related to the appraxia and instead related to bipolar.
727792 tn?1231227009 They must have delayed or disordered speech, problems understanding the meaning of words, difficulties following instructions, problems with expressive or receptive speech; (b) social communication. They must have difficulties with social interaction/play with their peer group.
Avatar f tn s infancy and he said he read that it is not unusual for children to have speech problems when the father is not there because the father has influence over the child's speech. Any truth to this?
Avatar f tn However, if that behaviour continues and is accompanied by other behaviours such as scratching at his face, spinning, flapping his hands etc, as well as difficulties with speech (either talking or understanding what is said to him), and problems with playing with other children or not appearing interested in other children, as well as appearing deaf or covering their ears - then you need to get an opinion from his paediatrician.
Avatar f tn any way he has been have development delays, especially in his speech, and behavioral problems. any information would be helpful, i dont know what to do. we saw a developmental specialist a year ago because his pediatrician thought he was showing signs for autisms, but that was ruled out and was diagnosed with anxiety problems. he still is having major problem in school and going to see the specialist again in a few weeks. thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.
356518 tn?1322263642 They both have severe speech problems and since they have been on the medicine their speech is improving but they seem like they are just drugged out to me. I have talked to their dr but he assures me this will pass. The 6 year old is extremly emotional while on it, I cut their dose to half of what the dr said and they still are not right. Any suggestions? I asked for strattara and dr says it will not work for them.
Avatar m tn My son has sensory integration disorder and was diagnosed at 4. He has social skills problems which are very common with sensory kids. Add speech issues to that and yes, peer interaction would be difficult. We worked on many social skills concepts quite diligently and while we still have some issues with my boy trying to "control" the situation to his liking, he is doing fine. He is 6 and in kindergarten and has no issues in the group setting.
Avatar n tn My own son did not stutter, but did have some speech clarity problems that were noticed when he started kindergarten, and some speech exercises fixed the problem very quickly. We wish you the best.
342647 tn?1291107933 Most hard sounds usually come out as a d sound and she is not saying the b sound. I know all children develop at different rates and she has no problems understanding me and hearing the front gate open, daddy comming home, the phone rininging etc. So my question is should i be concerned? Is there a place you can take your child to have a speech assessment or will they tell me it is to early?
Avatar m tn There are three parts of speech--- articulation (making the sounds) is one we all think of with speech. but there is also receptive speech (the ability to take in and organize what is said to you so that you can understand it) and expresssive (the ability to formulate the thoughts you want to express, to organize those thoughts into words to speak). Motor planning has a huge impact on these speech componants.
168006 tn?1241012961 So I am reading the comments and noticed something. All of you have sons that have this speech regression or speech issue. Is it more prominent in boys? I know that boys' speech development is usually later than girls. My 20-month old daughter says quite a bit and repeats everything we say, or tries to. But I have a nephew who is 4 months older than her and he says a few things but mostly grunts. So just wondering if this is predominantly a boy thing?
400099 tn?1282954864 Swallowing problems are very common in MS. I have had them too, off and on. Occasionally, when I'm having this problem during the day, I have had some scary incidences of waking up feeling like I couldn't breathe at night. I'm not sure if there's a connection or not. Have you had this problem before? Did the doctor mention anything about medicines to treat this as well?
Avatar f tn If his expressive speech (how he talks), or his receptive speech (what he understands is being said to him) are affected it will have a bit impact in school because most of the day involves listening to verbal information and having to communicate with teachers and children using speech. And he has also recently moved to another country and school as well. If he has these types of difficulties it is extremely 'normal' for him to be reacting with anger and frustration.
Avatar f tn he is 28 months and he has languagedelay development, after i saw a doctor he said that he has ADHD he saw him for 3, he recommended to us the speech therapy daily, after we started the speech therapy , he said that he should start to be under medication (Risperdal) my question is : is it that common to put a child that young under medication, or to diagnose him as ADHD , i am living in medial east.
Avatar f tn Screening for hearing loss is now recommended for all newborns. In children, hearing problems may cause speech to develop slowly. Ear infections are the most common cause of temporary hearing loss in children. Fluid may stay in the ear following an ear infection. The fluid can go unnoticed, or it can cause significant hearing problems in children. Has the child ever had a Audiometry (hearing test)? This could help a great deal in finding out to what extent is the hearing loss if any at all.
Avatar f tn The evidence you presented I've seen on various sites, but I agree that I have yet to see Eldermom's claim that the speech center is shut down... I also read something interesting on an allergy site about the different type of reactions such as the typical IgE allergy and then two different intolerance allergies. The site claimed that if you have an IgE reaction, you can't have an intolerance type reaction to the same thing...
Avatar n tn I forgot to ask you if he has any sensory issues. Does he appear deaf sometimes ie. not respond to his name, or cover his ears at certain noise, or does he like to make alot of noise. What are his senses of smell, touch, taste, balance and co-ordination like. Is he okay having his hair brushed, nails cut, socks and shoes on, tags in clothes. Does he like to spin or does he flap his hands?
Avatar m tn Sometimes, an autistic child will be high functioning in some areas, but not in others. Many children with autism have problems with certain textures, and some have issues with textures at all. Talk to your doctor about these issues, since they seem to be quite serious.
Avatar f tn My son was the same way! Couldn't speak but could understand everything. At his 2 yr appointment our doctor brought it to our attention and gave me then number of ESA (Educational Services Agency). They evaluated him and we started speech therapy at 2. About 4 months in there was no improvement and so they did another evaluation and said that they believed he had Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Which is a motor speech disorder.
941564 tn?1245303185 Hi Khalid, I don't know about the numbness and giddiness, but muscle spasticity as seen in CP is often worsened by stress, excitement, panic and other strong feelings. My partner has worked with children who have CP, and says it was incredibly common for them to work really hard, finally manage to complete an exercise like kicking a ball or hitting a balloon, and then become so excited at the achievement that their muscles would spasm and prevent them from moving.
Avatar n tn Once he reached 2, and still was not talking then they enrolled him in speech therapy and now he talks your ear off. He is 4 now. Some children are slower than others. I would talk to your doctor or get a second opinion. At 1 years old, they should NOT go on any meds for ADHD. This would harm the child severely at that age. Their little bodies cannot handle the stimulation that the meds are used for. I just cannot believe that a Doctor would even diagnose a child at such a young age.
Avatar f tn Not pick up on social cues and may lack inborn social skills, such as being able to read others' body language, start or maintain a conversation, and take turns talking. Dislike any changes in routines. Appear to lack empathy. Be unable to recognize subtle differences in speech tone, pitch, and accent that alter the meaning of others’ speech. Thus, your child may not understand a joke or may take a sarcastic comment literally.
5549102 tn?1376522673 s why speech therapists do not typically do full evaluations for speech until the age of three unless there are other problems. There is a wide range of normal. but I personally would watch closely. My son's speech issues were indicative of his developmental delay.
Avatar n tn Anyhow, I would get her evaluated, she may need speech therapy, it will only be good for her. Ive seen wonderful improvements from speech therapy in children. A young boy 3 years barely said a word, is now talking a mile a minute.
1667595 tn?1303333906 my 4 year also had a speech delay after speaking to her pediatrician she was put into a pediatric speech therapy session twice a week for 30 mins a day it has helped her so much she has completed her therapy and is now speaking in full sentences that we can actually understand speak to your pediatrician there is alot of local county hospitals that offers this pediatric therepy and they are wonderful with kids thats all they deal with is kids with problems in speech i hope this helps you
