Common Questions and Answers about Colonoscopy miralax

After 3 weeks finally called GI doc who ordered CT and said he saw nothing as a cause and prescribed Miralax daily. He said I could use daily or as needed forever. I used for 3 monthes an dall was wonderful, but recently it is not as effective and I think I have developed an allergy to it (burning tongue and throat and systemic itching) after drinking the Mitalax solution. Has anyone had these symptoms from Miralax? I am going to stop using it, but what do I do now?
I have been having okay results since June with Miralax and Colace. A few weeks ago I began having what looks to be blood in the stool. I told my onc right away. She said do not worry. It is probably from a blood vessel bursting. Well, I tried not to worry, but it did not work! Could the Miralax be the trouble?
he told me that I could use miralax and gatorade and it would be fine..I mean really I got the bathroom anywhere from 2 to 7 times a day, the prep is all I need to push me over the top...so I am hoping that I will be able to tolerate the prep and the colonoscopy will go fine. A couple of other things, I do take things over the counter to attempt to slow down this condition..
Hello: I am having a routine colonoscopy next week as I turned 50 in the last year. I have anxious tendancies when I see any physician and this procedure is creating a lot of anticipatory anxiety. May I take a couple of Xanex BEFORE I go to the appointment?
I would stop the Miralax completely. The diarrhea you are experienceing may be a residual effect of the Miralax. Try eating a well balanced diet, including some fiber, and if you see no improvement within 2 weeks, see another doctor who will listen and get to the root of the problem. Good luck to you.
I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy on Friday, July 31. I'm a little puzzled about my prep especially after hearing about other people experience. I'm suppose to take 4 Duculox- the day before alon with 17 grams of Miralax with 8 ounces of liquid every 15 minutes until I've taken the whole bottle.
Does anyone know what bowel prep for colonoscopy is safe for use by a patient with liver disease? I was given prescriptions for miralax/ducolax and for Suprep. Thanks!
told me that I should skip my diuretics and the bisacodyl and use only Miralax he says by using only the Miralax I wouldn't have a problem with my potassium because it's more gentle. But like I said my system is so sensitive that I’m still scared that I’ll get sick from the prep.
This will be my 2nd colonoscopy :-) I am 28 yrs old. In sept (last year) I had my first colonoscopy. I originally went to my ob/gyn complaining of stomach pain (I thought mostly due to endometriosis) So... my ob/gyn told me to go see a Gastroenterology specialist. This is to rule out other causes of stomach pain besides endometriosis. I went to a G.I. specialist- he did a colonoscopy. With the first colonoscopy I had it didn't go that well.
I have tried luctose and milk of magnesa for transit. I have been using Miralax for the last few months. I started with a cap full and strained to have movements in the beginning, now I am up to 10 caps 5x morning and 5x in evening. My primary doctor thought it was stress and prescribed xanax to help me relax. I no longer have Normal BM's I just sit and try several times a day.
I woke up one morning and had the start of my kidney stone dilemma that lasted 2yrs with a nasty UTI infection and they think the flora in my intestines got very messed up from that infection and never went back to normal bcz a colonoscopy and all bloodwork was fine .. then a yr later we discovered my thyroid nodules and when my TSH was all over the place so was the constipation so they all realized I was SubClinical Hypothyroid even though my TSH was normal!
Post colonoscopy problems by Ted174 Tags: distension, post colonoscopy, pressure, diagnosis, Dysbiosis 2 days later my abdomin started to distend. Within 2 weeks I went from 34" waist to 42" and lost 12 lbs. Have severe pressure in belly and diaphragm. Hard to breathe. Had ultrasound, full blood labs, x-rays and EGD. Still no diagnosis! What's wrong with me? Could it be Dysbiosis? And what would be the remedy? It's like my life has been taken away. I have no energy and am in pain.
First ever colonoscopy had in April 2006. Started being constipated towards end of 2006, but not chronic yet. March 2007 the constipation was getting worse. All sorts of suggestions given, but nothing was helping. Explaining became a repetitious activity as well as of no use. Exercise three times per week, walking 30-40 minutes three to four times per week, excessive fiber, 2-6 laxatives per evening, none of which altogether or otherwise helps the chronic constipation.
I just had my first colonoscopy today, I did the Miralax, ducolax prep...the miralax in gatorade was not bad at all, but the ducolax (I was supposed to take 4 before bedtime), well I have IBS and knew I could never do four of them...I only did one and the doc said the prep was fine...the ducolax gave me pain (cramps) for most of the night, I only went twice during the night, however, I had the procedure 8 this morning, its now 2pm and I am still going to the bathroom, how can that be???
Since this isn't working for you, try a stool softener, or Miralax. The prep they give you for the colonoscopy will clean you out if you follow the directions, so don't worry about that. I would try the Miralax, it's non-habit forming, and can be bought over the counter, and it's very effective.
I understand how difficult prepping for a colonoscopy is. I had my first one last month, and they did find small granulomas, which seems to point to Crohn's Disease. (still getting a second opinion in about a month). It was so awful for me, I pray I don't need another for a LONG time to come. Really, it is up to you. I don't think there is really a lot you can do to cleanse your colon as effectively as using the laxative pills or drink. It is the only way to ensure a thorough cleanse.
but a resident told me it was probably not essential at this point. As to a colonoscopy....do a prep with Miralax (spelling?)...very mild...and you really won't be all that uncomfortable. It is not acidic..so no worries. My doctor didn't care how I cleansed the colon ...just that I did it. The procedure is nothing. You are put to sleep and wake to hear your doctor tell you what is what. Back to bowel problems....we have to be aware of what we eat and staying regular...
Okay, so I have Ulcerative Colitis. Since my colonoscopy and gastroscopy almost a week ago, my digestive system hasn't functioned properly and I feel constipated. Is this common following the procedure?
OK so i had problems for a long time going to the bathroom, and i had a colonoscopy yesterday done and it showed i had a few polyps and internal hemmorids, and a spastic colon. My gastro said that the spastic colon is from my previous pregnancy when i told him that this has been going on from before my son.. HE totally did not listen to anything i said ! I am fustrated and pissed off. well anyway he told me the gas in my belly wil go away and DO NOT PUSH IT OUT.
He said you can have Miralax in the morning before taking the meds to avoid constipation. Can anyone please tell if my reaction to H Pylori meds was allergic or because I could not eat or drink anything? If kindly also advise if there are alternative treatments to kill this bug? My other worry is that if my symptoms are due to H Pylori or if have some kind of IBD. I have recently noticed that I starting to get headaches, nausea, eye redness and eye pain.
I am a 25 year old male healthy, occasional smoker and a homosexual with no anal intercourse since i started having issues 8 weeks ago. I had a colonoscopy 4 days ago due to my severe constipation over the past 2 months, it started with mucous and then my bowels completely stopped evacuating to the point where my stomach was distended and and nothing would help...enemas laxatives etched.
I had a Colonoscopy about 1 1/2 months ago and have not had a Normal Bowl Movement since. I am either very Constipated and when I strain to go: Stool is just small (dime sized marbles). My doctor suggested I take Miralax daily, which I have been doing now for 2weeks,but this leaves me with very loose stool & I go about 3-5 times a day. I have tried cutting back on the Miralax to only every other day, but then constipated again!
My GI recommended an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy to take a look at my recurring acid reflux and fairly regular (monthly) rectal bleeding (he suspects hemroidal in nature). He suggested that they be done in seperate procedures on two different days because, according to him, the preparation for the colonoscopy can make my upper tract appear raw, etc.
1-i have hemmorhoids due to my stomach issues/ im scared that the colonoscopy will hurt badly due to this...im also scared that even if it doesnt hurt during the procedure...it will aggravate the hemmorhoids so badly that they will hurt afterwords... any thoughts? 2-i have a chest injury from lifting weights. and i havent gotten it resolved, because the orthopedic doctor iwentt to was useless. its around the sternum area. i have heard that a side effect of the upper gi is chest pain...
Welcome to the gastroenterology community! I believe that as long as you are not using laxatives that are known that you will need more after time, I think it is okay if you are taking them everyday. Non "addicting" laxatives include things like Miralax and Milk of Magnesia. Even though "Smooth Move" may sound natural, it is not. It is the same thing as a medicine called Senakot which is not a good thing to use as you will need more and more as time goes on.
I'm having a colonoscopy in the AM due to a recent attack diverticulitis. I had one 5 years ago, doc said a few small scattered diverticula....I can't recall if this happened last time with the prep, but i'm seeing some whitish looking material in the otherwise clear stool. i got a little confused on the prep thing and missed the last 8oz glass of gatorade/miralax...what do you all think about this whitish thing, and will my missing that last glass effect the procedure?
he told me that I could use miralax and gatorade and it would be fine..I mean really I got the bathroom anywhere from 2 to 7 times a day, the prep is all I need to push me over the top...so I am hoping that I will be able to tolerate the prep and the colonoscopy will go fine. A couple of other things, I do take things over the counter to attempt to slow down this condition..
Tomorrow is also the day I'm supposed to drink all the liquids and take all the laxatives for a colonoscopy the following day. Is it hopeless? The appointment and the driving would all be over by 5 pm, and the colonoscopy is not until the next day at 4 pm. Does the fluid just run right through you, in which case I should simply cancel everything? My husband even wanted me to entertain clients out to dinner tomorrow night, which I find a pretty ludicrous idea.
Is the Visicol (or not) just a doctore preference? The doc for the colonoscopy wants me to do the Miralax/gatorade/dulcolax thing. Even more upsetting is the small bowel follow through doc wants me to do the magnesium citrate thing. Had to do cod liver oil as an 18year old and then drank the barium...couldn't keep it down and the radiologist walked out, blaming me for trying to throw up! Charming guy.
Next week, ultrasound of my guts and a billion blood tests. Next month he is doing a colonoscopy along with upper and lower GI scope and biopsies of my sm intestines.
