Avatar f tn I know the names cold urticaria and cold sore are similar by coincidence and that the cold sores could have originally been caused by the stress of the sudden cold urticaria, but is there any other possible connections between cold sores and cold urticaria or something that could cause both of these? Avatar m tn And also when in cold air or water, have gotten red and extremely itchy, and some what swollen/ possibly hives. This is very hard to tolerate. can you help me out. On the cold issue, exposed skin is worst , but any skin that gets a bit of cold is affected.

I have cold urticaria, which is an allergy to the cold, but i'm pretty sure it's only external stimuli, not internal. Could this be a blood circulation problem or something else? Thank you.

I don't have an idea as to what is causing the hives but I do know that an oatmeal bath is wonderfully soothing to help with the itching and scratching. If you aren't trying this it can be very helpful. You can buy an over the counter oatmeal pre-mix or just put some oatmeal in an old nylon knee hi and put a knot it it so the oatmeal doesn't spill into the bath water.

Avatar f tn Often when something hard accidentally scratches my arm such as a manila folder (or anywhere else on my body), it will initially show a long red line then gradually will turn into a long swollen, mozzy bite lump and becomes very itchy. When I apply a cold wet towel to the hives, it relieves the itchiness and eventually disappears. I take Zyrtec when the outbreak is severe, especially in summer when i wear sleeveless tops and miraculously it stops hives from appearing in the next 2 days.

Avatar n tn Hello, It can be due to cold urticaria. Cold urticaria is diagnosed by holding an ice cube against the skin of the forearm for 1 to 5 minutes. A distinct hive should develop if a patient has cold urticaria. Patients with cold urticaria should learn to protect themselves from a rapid drop in body temperature.Antihistaminics like Claritin and zyrtec can also be taken. The antihistamine cyproheptadine (Periactin) has been found to be a useful treatment also.
