Common Questions and Answers about Coffee caffeine and its effects in the human body

coffee

Avatar m tn I think I am caffeine intolerant. I thought caffeine only stayed in the body for 6 hours or so, but I swear it stays in me for more like 36 to 48 hours. If I ingest too much caffeine, I remain with anxiety for a couple of days. If I take in more caffeine, it just extends my misery. Seems my threshold is around 100 mg. I experience heart palpitations and "skipping". My doctor says it doesn't remain in the body but a few hours and water will flush it out. I don't believe him.
2006603 tn?1331329327 Finally, something concrete is that caffeine is both a stimulant and a diuretic and does cross the placenta meaning your fetus is subjected to those effects. The way I look at it is a 2-6 lb. fetus (rough 3rd tri estimate), with immature excretory and nervous systems, doesn't need the extra work of dealing with a bunch of chemicals messing with those systems while developing all the time. All that being said, personally, I love my cup of coffee.
Avatar f tn You really never know on a public forum what other medical issues may exist with the person posting besides the hepc. If someone says their doctor told them to avoid caffeine, even decaffeinated drinks and all we really know is they have NASH, hepc and are overweight that advice from a doctor doesn't seem merited.
Avatar f tn I changed to decaf. Decaf coffee and decaf tea bags so I still got the same taste and raised less suspicion at work. I just had to dramatically reduce my chocolate and cola intake but I'm not finding that too hard. What I'm struggling with at the moment is around 1pm at work with the sudden realisation of how tired I am. This is where I have a real cup of instant coffee to keep me going. Good luck!!!
Avatar f tn Does anyone know if it is OK to drink coffee / take in caffeine while on Abilify? I am on Abilify 5 mg, and I have not had any problems other than drowsiness. It has cleared my anxiety, though my doctor says she does not see the major/normal factors of bipolar disorder, and she believes that something else underlying caused my depression period. I am wondering if anyone else has taken a cup of coffee or two to nullify the effects of drowsiness?
Avatar f tn Thanks ladies. I've heard a lot of crazy things in regards to drinking coffee. And yes I have heard the mc theory as well. Someone even told me that my 3 MC's were caused cause I'm a coffee drinker. But I've always stopped drinking it while pregnant til this one. And like I said its only every now and then.
183202 tn?1219853659 I can find nothing in my nursing and/or pharmaceutical books that say to avoid caffeine while on lorazepam. Or any benzo for that matter. But it begs the question, just how much coffee are you drinking that would make you even ask this question? How long have you been on the ativan? One of the side effects when starting therapy with this med is drowsiness. Perhaps you are over-compensating for this by drinking more coffee than normal which is then throwing your sleep off.........
Avatar f tn as someone who also consumed a very large amount of caffeine per day (i work in the ER and swtich days to nights regularly so i need it) i feel your pain. that said, my RE recommended that I gradually decrease the amount of caffeine prior to starting IVF. i got down to 1-2 cups a day, then to 1-2 cups per week in the first trimester. now that i am full term, i am back to a cup a day. it's not going to cause any permanent damage.
Avatar f tn Caffeine is found in more than just coffee. Caffeine is not only found in coffee but also in tea, soda, chocolate, and even some over-the-counter medications that relieve headaches. Be aware of what you consume. Fact or Myth? Statement: Caffeine causes birth defects in humans. Facts: Numerous studies on animals have shown that caffeine can cause birth defects, preterm delivery, reduced fertility, and increase the risk of low-birth weight offspring and other reproductive problems.

695036 tn?1228405969 Caffeine increases the amount of acid in the body and interferes with the acid-base balance thus causing the body to produce more Estrogen than Progesterone. It's not only coffee ... tea, high energy drinks and chocolate are also caffeine rich. Most regular soda today is caffeine free.
1354772 tn?1300977548 The trick is to drink grapefruit juice after the coffee. The grapefruit juice maintains the high level of caffeine and enables you to reduce total intake of caffeine while staying awake and alert much longer without getting "jittery". Drinking grapefruit juice and coffee is an old truckdrivers trick. The grapefruit juice that works best is in the little six ounce cans. If you drink decaf select that which is processed with supercritical carbon dioxide.
Avatar f tn Google the amount of caffeine in the type of coffee you drink. I switched to decaf dunkin donuts coffee it only has 18mg of caffeine.
755829 tn?1246919225 Get a six ounce can of grapefruit juice and drink it with the coffee. The grapefruit juice will increase the half-life of the caffeine in the bloodstream, so you can stay awake all night on two cups instead of six. This works. Coffee also causes calcium depletion in the heart mjuscle, which can lead to palpitations. People differ in their sensitivity to this. Adding milk (calcium) makes this less likely, according to the folklore.
Avatar n tn If you are taking the Klonopin for anxiety then you really should reduce your caffeine intake especially concentrated caffeine drinks like Redbull. Thats like taking an upper and downer at the same time- its counterproductive. Caffeine ,lots of sugar and chocolates may make you more susceptable to anxiety.
Avatar n tn I mix it up. I have an espresso machine I bought back in those carefree days before I became an angst-ridden PVC'er. I keep regular and decaf espresso on hand and I'll mix a little bit of regular in with the decaf depending on how I feel. In the am I take my blood pressure and if its ok and I'm not having any palps before my beta blocker kicks in, I'll add more regular to the mix. I find though that every day is different.
Avatar m tn But since my symptoms started in june I simply have not been able to drink it, or any caffeine for that matter. I still try every once in a while and it really messes me up! Makes me feel l lightheaded. Almost drunk feeling. Anyone else experienced this or know why it could be? Meds dont seem to be any reason for it. It started before I even started treatment. Thanks in advance for any input!
2139403 tn?1339437937 Why dont u just get the decafe one its still coffie but not strong and it wont hurt the baby
Avatar f tn You can have caffeine but in moderation. I am an avid diet coke, coffee, and tea drinker and I needed to cut back but my ob said it would be okay if I had only 1 6-8oz serving of caffeine per day (it also helps me relieve headaches). Also, if your worried, just switch to decaf!
Avatar n tn There seems to be much disagreement as to its effects. After bypass surgery, I quit caffeine, but the docs said not to worry about it. So I don't. In fact, my cardiologist keeps a coffee pot going in his waiting room so his patients can have a cup while they wait.
Avatar m tn M - I think all of this is simply trial and error in finding what feels good for us as individuals. You might want to throttle back on the coffee, though. Whatever you do, take it slow because cold-turkey without the caffeine can give you killer headaches. We know coffee is an irritant to our bladders - do you find you have sudden urges? Could be related. I was a huge coffee drinker before my heart attack.
304970 tn?1331425994 When I was pregnant I would have my coffee in the am and then my tea in the afternoon. So about 2 cups of caffeine. My doctor said it was fine. Drink a lot of water though. You can easily become dehydrated during pregnancy and it can bring on Braxton Hicks contractions.
Avatar f tn (You can have 200 mg of caffeine a day) just remember to account for the caffeine in sodas, tea, and chocolate that you have as well.
432737 tn?1358549432 I was ttc for 14 months, I drank 2 cups of coffee every morning and then I had a coke in the afternoons. It may have been a coincidence but the month I decided to try 100% before giving up, I quit caffeine and got pregnant my next cycle.
389974 tn?1331015242 I drink one cup of coffee in the morning. I drink one cup of coffee in the afternoon, and like 2 or 3 at night when I'm on night shift. I put both cream and sugar.
