214864 tn?1229715239 or Death for 90 Days, With or Without Stents New Study in JAMA Suggests a "Rebound Effect" for Clopidogrel; May Have Major Implications for Acute Coronary Syndrome and Stent Patients; Study Author Gives Advice for Patients February 5, 2008 -- A study appearing in tomorrow's Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reports a two-fold increase in death and heart attack in the 90 days after heart patients completed their prescribed course of medical therapy with clopidogre
Avatar n tn I've followed this research, and from what I've learned the drug interaction of Plavix and PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) is not not that strong. I doubted the report from the start as I took Plavix and PPI's and my blood was as thin as tea, I bruised very, very easily, and the blood tests to determine my clotting factor wasn't changed by taking the two drugs.
Avatar n tn Either increases effects of the other by pharmacodynamic synergism. Significant - Monitor Closely. Clopidogrel and NSAIDs both inhibit platelet aggregation" Source: Medscape Reference. You can do this on your own. Just type "multi-drug interaction checker"and search. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Avatar f tn Without getting into the pharmocological aspects regarding the mechanism of action of asprin resistance and the mechanixm of activity of plavix (clopidogrel), the American Academy of Cardiology recommends tests. Dr. Waksman: "I'll try to do my best because it's a controversy.
Avatar m tn New data show that when clopidogrel and omeprazole are taken together, the effectiveness of clopidogrel is reduced. Patients at risk for heart attacks or strokes who use clopidogrel to prevent blood clots will not get the full effect of this medicine if they are also taking omeprazole.
690060 tn?1247841741 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has new data showing that omeprazole (Prilosec/Prilosec OTC)—a medicine used to reduce stomach acid—reduces the anti-blood clotting effect of clopidogrel (Plavix) by almost half when these two medicines are taken by the same patient." "...Patients using clopidogrel should consult with their healthcare provider if they are currently taking or considering taking omeprazole, including Prilosec OTC" but then, there's also this: http://www.
Avatar f tn //www.heartandstroke.ca/heart-disease/treatments/medications/antiplatelet-medications There is a third in the class of medications to try. I would work very closely with your doctor on this. I hope the third is better tolerated. A risk to benefit ratio needs to be done otherwise. Can you manage the side effects? Can dosing be changed? Do they get better as the body is used to the medication? Questions to ask if being on these is integral to living a longer life.
Avatar f tn In ALL the procedures I've had, I only took 600mg of Clopidogrel. 8 of the little pink blighters.
Avatar n tn Warfarin (coumadin): Because of the increased risk of bleeding, the concomitant administration of Warfarin with Plavix should be undertaken with caution. (See PRECAUTIONS - General.) At high concentrations in vitro, clopidogrel inhibits P450 (C).
Avatar n tn At high concentrations in the blood, clopidogrel (plavix) inhibits the activity of the enzyme which metabolizes (eliminates) warfarin (Coumadin), a "blood thinner". This could lead to an increase in levels of warfarin and increase the risk of bleeding due to over-thinning of the blood. To date there have been no reports of an important interaction in humans between warfarin and clopidogrel.
Avatar f tn s like if I want some Clopidogrel (another form of anti platelet med) I could ask for either Clopidogrel or Plavix, Plavix is the brand name the drug company trades the medication under.
Avatar m tn Obviously, there was minunderstanding regarding the word collapse!. And plavix use prior to a DES implant has been a subject of indesiveness and uncertainty since the introduction of drug eluding stents....subject of many threads on this forum. "Why" longer term therapy has been asked? There has been a recent study designed to evaluate the relationship between clopidogrel (plavix) use and long-term rates of cardiac death or MI after DES implantation. ".....
976897 tn?1379167602 I had to take 81mg of aspirin for five years along with 81mg of aspirin. I talked my doctor out of the plavix prescription recently, so I'm going on just 81mg of aspirin. Congratulations, Ed on the good report.
Avatar m tn I would just keep to the medications prescribed and eat a healthy diet. The Clopidogrel is important for the Stent and the drug coating on the stent will help to inhibit the formation of scar tissue.
Avatar f tn If you’ve already had a heart attack or stroke or are resistant to the beneficial effects of aspirin, your doctor may suggest supplementary aspirin therapy with another clot-preventing drug, such as clopidogrel (Plavix). Clopidogrel may even be suggested as an alternative drug therapy, particularly if you’re allergic to aspirin or can’t tolerate its side effects." Maybe someone will be able to add a thought or 2. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn Warfarin helps by thinning the blood but it can be a tricky drug to take, because it also increases the risk of brain hemorrhage, so patients must be carefully monitored when taking it. "Warfarin is linked to the most emergency hospital admissions for adverse drug effects. In one of the first, and largest, studies of its kind, Kaiser Permanente and Massachusetts General Hospital researchers set out the risks and benefits of warfarin".
482754 tn?1341791494 I was prescribed with Plavix after receiving a stent in my LAD. However, the physician quickly changed his mind after a test revealed that plavix had 0% inhibition effect on platelet aggregation for me. I was told this was due to a genetic effect. Then the physician prescribed me with Effient. Since it is a new drug and it is Christmas time with early closing, . I had hard time locating a pharmacy which stocked Effient.
Avatar n tn I am asking for a friend. Is there an alternative drug to cumadin, for example, plavix?
Avatar n tn The issue of clots with DES remains unsettled for length of time with clopidogrel regimen, and evaluation should be patient based and doctor's judgement. However, it is important to recognize that the current recommendation for an extended duration of clopidogrel use reflects a consensus opinion among experts within cardiovascular professional societies based on limited data, rather than on rigorous randomized clinical trials.
Avatar n tn It is becoming more acceptable now that clopidogrel is a benefit for life. While aspirin works on one side of the clotting process, clopidogrel works from another. You say your heart attack was caused by cholesterol but this isn't strictly true. Cholesterol is one of the later processes which makes the heart attack happen but isn't the initial cause. The initial cause is damage to your artery linings which can be through blood pressure or bad diet.
1346447 tn?1327862572 ClopivasAP150 is a combination of anti-platelet drug clopidogrel and blood thinner aspirin. If there is an internal bleed, and this drug is continued, then it can worsen the bleed. Depending on the location of the bleed, an increased bleed can become life threatening. Please consult your doctor regarding this. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar n tn The prolonged use of clopidogrel (Plavix) greatly reduces the risk of late thrombosis in DES, but clopidogrel itself poses problems. Aside from the expense and the risk of bleeding posed by the long-term use of this drug, using clopidogrel (because of the pronounced bleeding tendency it causes) essentially precludes any invasive medical procedures whatsoever.
Avatar m tn I am one week post close trying not to lift too much in weight or strain but have had central chest pain for several days now. Not acute, just aching and heavy. Some brief runs of AF and slight left sided heart sensation like pinching but the central pain is the most disconcerting. Could this be the clopidogrel? Am also more tired than before the procedure! What's the expected recovery time? Will this chest pain resolve or should I see my doc? Thank you.
Avatar f tn In patients with documented hypersensitivity reactions after DES implantation, the reaction could be due either to medical therapy associated with stent implantation or to the DES itself. Several components of the DES could be responsible for the hypersensitivity reaction. These include the polymer coating, the drug (rapamycin for CYPHER and paclitaxel for TAXUS), or the stent itself.
Avatar m tn Which is better anticoagulnt from rivaroxaban and clopidogrel for stroke prevention. My grandmother had stroke 6 years ago and she has atrial fibrilation. So far she used clopidogrel as treatment but her new doctor perscribed medication with rivaroxaban (but it is far more expensive) ?
