Clopidogrel and warfarin

Common Questions and Answers about Clopidogrel and warfarin

plavix

Avatar n tn I have been on Coumadin for 18 years due to Lupus Anticoagulant (Antiphospholipid Syndrome) and several DVTs. In 2005 had MI with occlusion of the LAD artery and had drug stent inserted and I am still on plavix. My doc has debated when to take me off the Plavix safely....what are the recent studies about this dilemma? thanks so much!
Avatar n tn To date there have been no reports of an important interaction in humans between warfarin and clopidogrel. Nonetheless, because warfarin increases the risk of bleeding, blood tests to measure the degree to which the blood is anti-coagulated or thinned (prothrombin time; INR) may be ordered to assess the degree of blood-thinning when warfarin and clopidogrel are used together.
Avatar n tn Well before any decision is made for something like Warfarin, you should have your INR (clotting factor) tested. An INR of 1 is how long normal blood takes to clot. An INR of 2 means it take twice as long and so it goes on. Aspirin and Clopidogrel (plavix) I believe attack the clotting mechanisms in different ways. Personally I don't think they know the long term outcomes.
Avatar f tn s like if I want some Clopidogrel (another form of anti platelet med) I could ask for either Clopidogrel or Plavix, Plavix is the brand name the drug company trades the medication under.
Avatar n tn 5 years my cardiologist suggests me to change to warfarin + asprin theraphy. I am scared of warfarin due to its side effects and risks. What are my risks if I continue with my currrent asprin+clopidogrel dual anticoagulant theraphy? Shall appreciate advice or sharing your experience with these drugs or necessity of changing over from one drug to another?.
612551 tn?1450022175 My cardiologist has never expressed any concern about long term use of any AFib drugs, I'm on - and I have asked. I take 5 mg Warfarin and 100 mg (or more) of Metoprolol SR every day.
Avatar n tn I am a 71y male, active , working medical professional, with Hx of Htn & carbamatic mechanical aortic valve in 2000 for AI. Non Eluding Stent in Nov. 2009. Although published INR range is b/w 2-3 for patients on triple anti-thrombotic therapy of 75mg clopidogrel, 80mg asprin & warfarin,I've also heard that INR of 1.5 - 2 is also acceptable. Kindly verify, confirm, advise, forward relevant studies/trials PDFs.Thank you for your timely response and effort.
Avatar f tn Based on the level of risk, most patients are either started on aspirin or Warfarin (Coumadin). Clopidogrel (Plavix) is an anti-platelet agent and acts via a different mechanism than coumadin does (coagulation pathway). Adding Clopidogrel to aspirin is a guideline that holds a Class 2b (see below) recommendation, and usually considered in those in which Warfarin is unsuitable due to patient preference or physician's assessment on a patient's ability to safely sustain anticoagulation.
612551 tn?1450022175 In particular, people taking fish oil or long-chain omega-3 fatty acid (EPA and DHA) supplements in combination with anticoagulant drugs, including aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), dipyridamole (Persantine), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid) and warfarin (Coumadin), should have their coagulation status monitored using a standardized prothrombin time assay (INR).
Avatar f tn ve eight stents and always was given a handful of Clopidogrel (Plavix) during the prep time before the surgery, and a couple of aspirins. They want the blood as thin as possible during the procedure to reduce the risk of stroke or arterial obstructions, obviously. I'd not be concerned and take the medication as asked. Best wishes with the procedure, keep us informed.
Avatar n tn Regarding her bleeding ulcers, why don’t you suggest coated aspirin tablets and clopidogrel tablets to the doctors? It’s much easier to control the bleeding time with these drugs than with Warfarin, which also causes osteoporosis. Since her oxygen level drops to 78, it’s crucial that she stays on oxygen, since the lack of oxygen will affect her brain before any other organ. It’s a life saving factor and not a comfort process. However, causes should be looked for this low oxygen level.

Avatar f tn If you are bruising that easily with warfarin, clopidogrel(plavix) and aspirin, then I think your cardiologist is probably suggesting a wise change in your medication. Warfarin is a powerful anticoagulant and I think your stents should be fine with withdrawal of the plavix. The main concern here is obviously an internal bleed which can be life threatening. My opinion is that the balance for your safety has to be right, and the cardiologist has done that.
Avatar m tn I would just keep to the medications prescribed and eat a healthy diet. The Clopidogrel is important for the Stent and the drug coating on the stent will help to inhibit the formation of scar tissue.
Avatar m tn I am currently taking plavix, 81mg aspirin AND coumadin on a daily basis. I had a stent put in in July 2008 and triple by pass in 2006. I'm 64 and had my first MI at 33. My father died of an MI at 46, my EF is under 30%. My EP (at one hospital) just suggested I eliminate the plavix while my CHF specialist (at a nearby major research university) said I would be on plavix for a "long time" (forever?).
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with BPH a year ago and was given Flomax. I had to go to Iceland and forgot my Flomax. My friend was taking a local product available over the counter called SAGAPRO made from a herb called Angelica. I used it and to my suprise...it worked. It even works better than Flomax! Do you know why this herb is so good for the prostate? Are their any side effects....I have noticed I am breathing better and also sleeping better. I have not used my inhaler since I have been on the sagapro.
Avatar m tn t know how warfarin is affecting your life style. I have been on warfarin for years and had no concerns about running and bike riding, and using power wood working tools. All of these activities puts one at an increased risk of a cut and bleeding, but I simply take the risk. On the other hand, I don't sky dive, or pick fights ....
Avatar n tn after a stent inplant how long must clopidogrel-winthrop be taken my heart attack was caused by cholestral which now a 3
Avatar n tn ginger and glucosamine sulfate will affect coumadin (warfarin) I'm on warfarin and can't take ginger or glucosamine and a host of other supplements.
Avatar n tn I have been told that the INR safe range is b/w 2-3 for patients on triple anti-thrombotic therapy of 75mg clopidogrel, 80mg asprin , and warfarin - 10 years after aortic valve replacement. However, it has also been mentioned that an INR of 1.5 - 2 is also acceptable. Please verify and confirm. Patient is 71y active , still working medical professional, with Hx of Htn and aortic valve replaced in 2000 to manage Aortic Insufficiency. Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn DOES ANYONE KNOW IF WARFARIN CAN LOWER YOUR BLOOD COUNT AND AND ALSO LOWER CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D LEVELS?
690060 tn?1247841741 I tried to copy and paste the second article you referred ot "Cardiologists shocked by a new FDA alert on clopidogral-ppi interaction," but was unable to access it. Could you tell us what it says? (Thanks.
