Common Questions and Answers about Clopidogrel and proton pump inhibitors fda

plavix

Avatar n tn t good because it has no protection from the acid, becomes damaged and inflamed, and very painful. Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole ensure your stomach produces less acid, giving help for repair of ulcers, or helping with acid reflux in the oesophagus.
Avatar n tn Ive only heard of proton pump inhibitors reducing the effect of Clopidogrel (plavix) but only by a tiny amount. I do have to question though if Zantac is a proton pump inhibitor anyway? Isn't it just a H2 receptor blocker?
Avatar n tn I've followed this research, and from what I've learned the drug interaction of Plavix and PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) is not not that strong. I doubted the report from the start as I took Plavix and PPI's and my blood was as thin as tea, I bruised very, very easily, and the blood tests to determine my clotting factor wasn't changed by taking the two drugs.
Avatar f tn Just saw this news release from the FDA, and it may affect Lyme patients doubly, since to my understanding Lyme depletes magnesium, and so if you're taking PPIs (proton-pump inhibitors) also, your magnesium levels may be affected more strongly. Something to check with your doc about if you're concerned.
Avatar m tn New data show that when clopidogrel and omeprazole are taken together, the effectiveness of clopidogrel is reduced. Patients at risk for heart attacks or strokes who use clopidogrel to prevent blood clots will not get the full effect of this medicine if they are also taking omeprazole.
Avatar n tn Without a definite diagnosis at hand, it would be difficultly to suggest a management plan. If proton-pump inhibitors have not been effective other medications such as H2 blockers that reduce gastric acidity may be considered. I would suggest considering a detailed evaluation by a gastroenterologist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Avatar n tn Long term use of proton pump inhibitors to treat acid reflex and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) may increase the risk of osteoporosis and hip fractures, according to a Canadian study published in 2008. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) block the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. The study, which included 63,000 Canadians over the age of fifty, studied prescription records and medical records amongst other factors.
Avatar n tn I've had on-and-off mild nausea, including two episodes of vomitting. To check for possible gallbladder problems I had an abdominal ultrasound. The report showed a normal gallbladder but "inhomogeneous pancreas". The doctor has ordered amylase, lipase, and liver function blood work. I have been on proton pump inhibitors for years for GERD and eosiniphilic esophagitis. It's weeks before I can see the gastroenterologist.
Avatar m tn patients with a history of aspirin-induced gastrointestinal bleeding should receive aspirin plus a proton-pump inhibitor) ◦prior MI (over 1 year previous) or stroke, and at high risk of vascular events ◦peripheral vascular disease that is symptomatic or was surgically corrected. .Use clopidogrel (Plavix) (75 mg/day) plus aspirin (81-162 mg/day) and re-assess after 1 year in these patients: ◦acute MI within past year ◦coronary stent insertion within past year.
Avatar n tn The device decreased exposure to esophageal acid, improved reflux symptoms, and allowed cessation of proton-pump inhibitors in the majority of patients." Support for this study was provided by Torax Medical.
1747349 tn?1332683680 Hi Rotimber, This is an article from Wikipedia. Further information: Helicobacter pylori eradication protocols Once H. pylori is detected in patients with a peptic ulcer, the normal procedure is to eradicate it and allow the ulcer to heal. The standard first-line therapy is a one week "triple therapy" consisting of proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole, lansoprazole and the antibiotics clarithromycin and amoxicillin.
Avatar m tn i was also checked for a uti and low blood sugar and my thyroid and those were all normal. I am currently taking a proton pump inhibitor and it seemed to help a little bit but i still feel horrible. if you have any other ideas of what it could be please let me know. Thank you!
Avatar f tn I have now been advised by a Pharmacist that Prevacid will help me. Will it?? Is this a Beta Blocker only or more? Avatar m tn Hi, Increased acid reflux per se is not supposed to cause increased frequency of micturition but the drugs used to treat the acid reflux like prilosec, nexium which come under the category of proton pump inhibitors can cause increased frequency of micturition. I sincerely believe that helps. Please do keep me posted. Warm Regards.
Avatar n tn This is because lansoprazole and other proton pump inhibitors weaken the bones and have been linked to the development of osteosteoporosis. People who are at higher risk for sustaining such injuries are those who take higher doses of this medication and those who take this medication for one year or longer. Also, people who are 50 years of age and older are also at risk of sustaining similar injuries.
Avatar f tn If Ondansetron is not helping there are other drugs like antacids and proton pump inhibitors that can give relief. You can ask your Doctor for a change of prescription. Also dietary modification like eating a bland non-spicy food, avoiding alcohol and smoking will help. The answer is based on information provided. Exact advice is not possible without a proper examination and investigations. You are requested to consult your Doctor. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar m tn Hi, You must me having acid reflux problems, I suppose. Try drinking plenty of warm water and proton pump inhibitors such as esomeprazole. Avoid greasy food, alcohol and smoking for few days.
698496 tn?1228112508 PPI'S (Proton pump inhibitors) are fine to take before or during tx. I am on tx and taking nexium, prevacid is also a good one. prilosec otc is also fine to take. I took it before starting tx and my viral load had never been lower. Not that prilosec made a difference but it sure did not make it go up.
Avatar m tn This class of medications includes omeprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, and esomeprazole. Proton pump inhibitors also appear to inhibit H. pylori activity. Cytoprotective agents are designed to help protect the tissues that line the stomach and small intestine. They include the medications sucralfate and misoprostol. If NSAIDs are being taken regularly, one of these medications to protect the stomach may also be taken. Another cytoprotective agent is bismuth subsalicylate.
Avatar m tn Nexium and Prilosec interfere with Plavix not because they are members of a particularly powerful class of acid-reducing drugs called proton pump inhibitors or PPIs, but because they inhibit an enzyme, CYP 2C19, that activates Plavix. Several other drugs also inhibit CYP 2C19, and the FDA says patients on Plavix should avoid them as well.
