Clopidogrel and bleeding

Common Questions and Answers about Clopidogrel and bleeding

plavix

Avatar f tn ve eight stents and always was given a handful of Clopidogrel (Plavix) during the prep time before the surgery, and a couple of aspirins. They want the blood as thin as possible during the procedure to reduce the risk of stroke or arterial obstructions, obviously. I'd not be concerned and take the medication as asked. Best wishes with the procedure, keep us informed.
Avatar m tn It seems to me you are at a highly increased risk for excessive bleeding, and that may exceed the risk of clots, etc., but your doctor may consider you at a high risk for blood clot?!
Avatar n tn To date there have been no reports of an important interaction in humans between warfarin and clopidogrel. Nonetheless, because warfarin increases the risk of bleeding, blood tests to measure the degree to which the blood is anti-coagulated or thinned (prothrombin time; INR) may be ordered to assess the degree of blood-thinning when warfarin and clopidogrel are used together.
Avatar n tn I have been on Coumadin for 18 years due to Lupus Anticoagulant (Antiphospholipid Syndrome) and several DVTs. In 2005 had MI with occlusion of the LAD artery and had drug stent inserted and I am still on plavix. My doc has debated when to take me off the Plavix safely....what are the recent studies about this dilemma? thanks so much!
Avatar n tn I in no way say you should do the same, but two years ago I went against my Doctor and Cardiologist and came off anti coagulants. I was fed up bleeding for a long time if I cut myself, and wondered what would happen if I had a small bleed in the brain or somewhere. I concluded that taking anticoagulants was too risky and stopped them. In the last two years I've not had any problems and my cuts heal very quickly. If you have known blockages then these meds can be beneficial.
Avatar f tn I had a double bowel obstruction requiring emergency surgery immediately several years ago when taking plavix, and bleeding was a concern and a problem during the surgery. That being said, I'm still standing.
1346447 tn?1327862572 ClopivasAP150 is a combination of anti-platelet drug clopidogrel and blood thinner aspirin. If there is an internal bleed, and this drug is continued, then it can worsen the bleed. Depending on the location of the bleed, an increased bleed can become life threatening. Please consult your doctor regarding this. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar n tn It seems plavix helps reduce the risk for clots at implant site, and after a year the risk of clots is less than the risk of excessive bleeding with plavix. After a year discontinued plavix and remain on a baby aspirin. Several months ago after some dental work there was excessive bleeding for hours on a baby aspirin...so I'm not cool with large doses of anti-platelet meds. Warfarin can cause very serious (possibly fatal) bleeding.
Avatar n tn The prolonged use of clopidogrel (Plavix) greatly reduces the risk of late thrombosis in DES, but clopidogrel itself poses problems. Aside from the expense and the risk of bleeding posed by the long-term use of this drug, using clopidogrel (because of the pronounced bleeding tendency it causes) essentially precludes any invasive medical procedures whatsoever.
Avatar n tn The issue of clots with DES remains unsettled for length of time with clopidogrel regimen, and evaluation should be patient based and doctor's judgement. However, it is important to recognize that the current recommendation for an extended duration of clopidogrel use reflects a consensus opinion among experts within cardiovascular professional societies based on limited data, rather than on rigorous randomized clinical trials.
Avatar m tn I would just keep to the medications prescribed and eat a healthy diet. The Clopidogrel is important for the Stent and the drug coating on the stent will help to inhibit the formation of scar tissue.
Avatar f tn There are no documented evidence that plavix causes stomach bloating. Plavix is a medication that helps prevent clot formation, and there is increased risk for excessive bleeding.
482754 tn?1341791494 I no longer have to take clopidogrel and effient wasn't around for me to use. However, I do remember reading some articles on this medication. Although it has been approved for patient use, it does have one concern. If you are on this drug and have surgery such as a bypass, it tends to cause severe bleeding, which can be fatal. Clopidrogrel (plavix) has no such problem attached to it. On the plus side, it reduces other risks dramatically and outperforms clopidogrel hands down.
Avatar n tn after a stent inplant how long must clopidogrel-winthrop be taken my heart attack was caused by cholestral which now a 3
Avatar n tn 5 months ago she had a massive stroke which has left her paralysed on the left side. (This is her 3rd stroke) Due to medicine she was taking she developed bleeding ulcers and had to be given blood. She was also dehydrated. Since leaving the hospital 3 weeks ago (she is now in a nursing facility) her oxygen levels continue to drop to 78. Her machine was on 5 1/2 this week and once they got her back to 92 they put it back to 3. even with the oxygen on it continues to drop.
612551 tn?1450022175 Rosenfeld) said the new drug does not require any blood tests (protime) and does not have the bleeding problems of Warfarin. He said it is being evaluated by the US FDA. Sounds like good news to me, and AFig sufferer.
Avatar m tn Hello Abdul284 It is hard to give you an accurate assessment of the situation but generally speaking all coronary artery stents require uninterrupted use of aspirin and clopidogrel (ticagrelor or prasugrel may be alternative medications utilized). The duration of this therapy varies depending on stent type.
Avatar m tn stopped taking clopidogrel and were followed up for an additional 12 months. At 18-month follow-up, there was no difference between patients with a drug-eluting or bare-metal stent in cumulative rates of death or myocardial infarction (MI). However, after clopidogrel discontinuation patients receiving drug-eluting vs bare-metal stents experienced higher rates of death and MI (4.9% vs 1.3%, respectively).
690060 tn?1247841741 I tried to copy and paste the second article you referred ot "Cardiologists shocked by a new FDA alert on clopidogral-ppi interaction," but was unable to access it. Could you tell us what it says? (Thanks.
Avatar m tn Which is better anticoagulnt from rivaroxaban and clopidogrel for stroke prevention. My grandmother had stroke 6 years ago and she has atrial fibrilation. So far she used clopidogrel as treatment but her new doctor perscribed medication with rivaroxaban (but it is far more expensive) ?
Avatar n tn s heart valve and a pacemaker and they were taking the medication clopidogrel for 7 years and then stopped taking it for a few months, could there be any ramifications?
Avatar m tn New data show that when clopidogrel and omeprazole are taken together, the effectiveness of clopidogrel is reduced. Patients at risk for heart attacks or strokes who use clopidogrel to prevent blood clots will not get the full effect of this medicine if they are also taking omeprazole.
Avatar f tn The selection of the antithrombotic agent is usually based on the absolute risk of stroke and bleeding and the relative risk and benefit for a given patient. Based on the level of risk, most patients are either started on aspirin or Warfarin (Coumadin). Clopidogrel (Plavix) is an anti-platelet agent and acts via a different mechanism than coumadin does (coagulation pathway).
