clonidine used for sleep

Clonidine can be effective if used correctly. Once 20 years ago, a doc in a hospital in Ca. gave me a great clonidine detox inpatient. I was hooked on methadone and heroin so he gave me clonidine pills and put a patch on me plus gave me some attivan and darvon. It worked great and I was sleeping all the time. He gradually awoke me after about 10 days and after 3 weeks I was off all detox meds. I tried to duplicate this later but it didn't work as well.

He was having a very difficult time sleeping and clonidine relaxes him enough so that he can sleep for about 4 hours at one time, before we were lucky if he slept for 2 hours at once during the night. There are side effects because it is used to lower blood pressure and it might cause some weight gain. I guess I don't have an opinion, good or bad, about clonidine. We are trying it as a place to start.

Clonidine was initially used as an antihypertensive but it has come to be used to treat a variety of behavioral disorders including tics, symptoms of ADHD, aggression, PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, or sleep problems. Medication of this sort can be helpful and has shown to be most effective in conjunction with systematic behavioral programming.

hi.....i have never used clonidine but it's suppose to be for high BP and also can be used for anxiety from what i've read. I am on a diff med for high BP. Good luck and hope it works for you! i've read that it helps alot of people calm down thru WDs.

If you are at the start of your w/ds then I would talk to the DR about getting a few prescribed during your detox..They work for Anxiety & help with Sleep. I got mine finally prescribed after I went 22 days of High Anxiety & No Sleep coming off of 3 meds at once back in 2012. I could only take it at Night!!!! Now almost 2 years later I had some Heart Procedures and have learned alot about these BP Meds.

second, my doctor prescribed two clonidine patches for me for any withdrawl symptoms. What do these do ? my doc said it woud basically knock me out...love that of course... but, i am hesitant because i had never heard of it... i know it is a little strange for a prescription lover to be afraid of a new drug...weird. but, i would like to hear about some experiences with people who have tried it before. I posted this in my long long post about opioid withdrawals but no luck so I thought I would do a new thread.... I am coming off percocet 7.5\325 2 - 5 x a day and oxy 20 mg 2 - 3 x a day for the past couple years. I have a script for clonidine .1 which isn't doing much so I called my regular doc and he is going to put me on Klonopin ( Dosage unknown until I get script tomorrow). From what I can tell these are 2 totally different drugs. Has anyone used Klonopin for opioid withdrawls?

1mg at 10am, 4 pm since i started and trazodone 100mg at night for sleep... anyone have experience with these? ive heard clonidine if you just stop taking it it can spike your blood pressure... and trazodone is addictive? i dunno.... anyway any comments would help.. i was gonna start today by reducing the trazodone in half and tomorrow cut back to just one clonidine a day for 3 more days... sound alright?

In every story i have read about Clonidine being used for withdraw, the addict was only prescribed .1mg twice or three times a day. I was prescribed 15- .1mg Clonidine every 12hrs and 15- .25mg Xanax every 6hrs as needed. It was a tremendous help as far as the anxiety goes. I'd been through withdraws MANY times, and i really feel like these were a huge help in getting me through that first week. I wish i had a few more Xanax, but i made it without. I agree with bmdad...

help with the RLS and getting good sleep. I wish I would of had the clonidine...a LOT of people use that to help themselves get clean. Seriously, hang in there. Another trick, I used Robitussian Cold and Cough on Day 3 for bad stomach pains. It's with Dextromorphan in it. It's been shown to help with withdrawal...and it honestly did work for me. It eased the cravings and the stomach pain. The RLS and stomach pain were the worst for me.

Yes they will help.I took clonidine which helps with a bunch of different symptoms and a benzo as well which helps w/the awful anxiety.I did c/t used those2meds,immodium&took otc sleep aid(didnt take benzos for sleep because I didnt wanna need them to sleep if that makes any sense i took them during the day only).Those made my w/d a lot easier.

But the Clonidine is not working like it used to be,and I cannot sleep because of the night sweats.summer is coming,and it will be harder with the hot weather.No kidding,but sometimes I fell worst than when tapering opioids.Wish I had taken more time,and stopped very slow without clonidine..i have the 0.1 and 0.2 ones.They are cheap,and i can buy how many I want..but want my life and sleep back..Any suggestions?Help...

BP too low and pulse. So thankyou for that advice...I actually feel abit stronger and Im sure sleep will follow!!! Im on my way!!! Good Luck to all...I'll check back in tommorrow!!

When I was working as an ER nurse I frequently observed it being used for opiate withdrawal, and for sleep in children with ADHD. It seems to be a one man band.

I would suggest to get off the colonidine now. You may have to lose a few hours sleep until your body adjusts to going to sleep on its own. But clonodine can be addicting too.

anyone had experience taking clonidine for sleep issues? i have high blood pressure (and clonidine is a blood pressure med), but my doctor is mainly prescribing it for me as a SLEEP AID to try to keep me off of the benzos for sleep purposes (which have always worked so well for me!)....i'm curious about two things though.....one, how much has anyone taken strictly for sleep purposes? and two, have you had ANY problems stopping it if you want/need to?

During my detox from methadone I used clonidine & yes it really does work wonders, I used it 4 days after taking my last dose of methadone & it saved me from many bad days, Im not saying I felt great on clonidine as I did,nt, but I sure felt more relaxed & could sleep.

How long do you normally take clonidine for withdrawal symptoms from Oxycontin and Percocet?

the clonidine is not habit forming but if u stay on it for a while u do need to taper off/i was at 100 mgs of hydro for 4 yrs but didnt try the clonidine...i did ok without it and used ambien for sleep...probably not the best choice as ambien canbe abused as well but all it ever did was knock me out in 10 minutes..valerian root./melatonin/benadryl are all otc meds that u may want to try...if u have a low blood pressure clonidine is not a good choice...

I got clonidine on day 4 and it helped! I wish I'd gotten it sooner....should've. I recommend it. Helped me sleep, and I haven't sobbed uncontrollably since. Go for it. They only gave me 5 pills total. ANd it's not addictive. Not liKe the rest of the b.s. methodone and suboxone.

my doctor gave me clonidine to take at night with my regurlar blood pressure medicine in the am and i read up on it and it said don't take with rx pain meds so I haven't but I also noticed that it is used for w/d's so how long do you have to wait after your out of pain meds can you start taking it?

Clonidine is a med also used for hypertension so it would be okay to take the Valium; the two don't compete.Due to the drowsy effect of both, don't take them at the same time.

I was prescribed Clonidine for my Fentanyl patch WD symptoms. I think it helped me a little through the first symptoms, but it was a painfull process. I don't think you can ever take all the pain out of WD; it is inevitable. I was told to take it at night, but found it was actually keeping me awake. One of the side effects is insomnia, which is one of the last things I need, so I stopped taking it after a couple of weeks.

I went to see my doc and he wants me to continue taking the conidine and ativan but to reduce the clonidine to .1 for two days, then 05 for a day then stop it. He advised just to take the avtivan at night until I can fall alseep on my own. He also gave me some roxicet and told me to take 3 today, 2 tomorrow and one the next day. He claims this will help me with cravings until I get into rehab where I can get something tradition for the craving...I start rehab on Monday and it lasts 5 weeks.....
