Common Questions and Answers about Clonidine tics

Avatar f tn One pediatric neurologist recommended clonidine. A second did not -- he recommended neurofeedback and EEG test, which we are addressing now. I am trying to follow the second neuro opinion, and take the natural route. I ordered a vitamin mix, which concentrates on B6 and Magnesium as these deficiencies are said to contribute to motor tics. I would appreciate any comments or guidance. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Kids at school are beginning to notice and are asking her about it. I have been given a prescription for Clonidine. Has anyone tried Clonidine? Was the Clonidine successful? What side effects were seen?
Avatar n tn Are there any other problems in addition to the ADHD and tic disorder? Does he display any voacl tics in addition to the motor tics? You'll want to rule out Tourette's Disorder. Since you are close to Chicago, it would be worthwhile to have him undergo a thorough evaluation in both neurology and child psychiatry at Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago. You will not likely find much, if any, benefit from alterations of his diet.
Avatar n tn He has jus started a college course that he really enjoys and now he cant attend that as these tics are so powerful that he cannot keep them in. It looks like clonidine and sulpiride have lost their effect. We are going to see pyschiatrist tomorrow to talk about new meds. Ive heard mixed stories about ORAP, HALDOL and RISPERIDONE. can anyone advise us on which one would work best for such severe motor and vocal tics.
Avatar n tn Tenex, which is generic name guanfacine, and clonidine are 2 medications that can be used for tics. Each have their side effects but they are in general safe and are often effective in suppressing tics. Some recent research has shown that behavioral therapy may be helpful to some individuals.
Avatar n tn The decision whether or not to treat nervous tics largely depends on their underlying cause and whether or not they are interfering with the person’s life functions. If the underlying cause is a physical or mental health threat, then that cause must be addressed. Similarly, if the nervous tics are making it difficult for a person to socialize or otherwise live a normal, happy life, it may be necessary to develop a plan to control the problem.
Avatar f tn Clonidine was initially used as an antihypertensive but it has come to be used to treat a variety of behavioral disorders including tics, symptoms of ADHD, aggression, PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, or sleep problems. Medication of this sort can be helpful and has shown to be most effective in conjunction with systematic behavioral programming.
Avatar f tn Her past tics have been shoulder shrugs, leg and arm twittching, belly twitching, etc. At one point her tics were severe and her neuro put her on clonidine. Her neuro thinks hers is transient tic syndrome. I think they are tourettes. We are currently investigating these things. I also got her a therapist to help her deal with these things. I also try not to bring attention to her tics. It does look as if she does some of this on purpose but its not.

Avatar n tn It came and went though. Since he has had periods of tics and OCD type behavior that is out of the norm. Currently he was on antibotics for a sinus infection (7 days) and still has a stomach (three days). His behavior has completely changed as he is clingy, rolls his eyes, makes clicking noises with his mouth and can't sit still at all. It is constant movement. It seems like he is being taken over. What do I do and can a sinus infection be linked to PANDAS?
Avatar f tn Is this a tic? All of the motor tics i just mentioned are constant. The vocal tics he makes are sniffing, clearing his throat, and humming. This really hard on him his doctor has tried other medicine to try and controll it and nothing has worked. He started taking vyvanse about a month ago and it doesn't seem like it's working. He is very stressed about going back to school because the kids pick on him for this. It breaks my heart my child has to go through this.
Avatar n tn I took him to Children's in Pittsburgh and the neurologist still will not diagnose him with Tourette's because even though he's had the facial tics for 3-4 years he's only had the vocal tic for 3 weeks. Apparently the vocal and motor tics must both be present for a year. She did however give us a prescription for clonidine, so we'll see if that works or not.
Avatar f tn I am on pretty strong levels of Clonidine (0.2mg BID) and Celexa (40-mg BID) so I am fearful of how the tics will be when we start weining. Any ideas, suggestions, articles, etc...are greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn The internet should have a lot of information on tics - I might suggest you google the phrase "children and tics" or similar words/phrases to find out about this topic. Please note that the word is spelled "tic" - your spelling indicates fleas or bugs. Hope this helps ....

Avatar n tn My 7 year old son has been taking 10 MG of Adderall daily for the past 2 1/2 months. Recently his Dr. RXd him Clonidine to help him sleep. Since he started taking the med Adderall I have noticed him starting to tic. After discussing this with his Dr at a med check, his Dr assured me that it is normal, but within the last week or so it has gotten worse.
Avatar m tn maybe his anxiety is increasing and it is making his tics worse. perhaps he is being teased at school or something. have they tried clonidine for the tics? what has been on for the OCD??
Avatar m tn Hello, Childhood tics are not uncommon. The majority of children simply outgrow them. There are prescription medications that can help reduce the frequency and severity of tics, but they generally come with negative side effects. Most patients with tics or Tourette's do not require medication and simply learn to cope with their tics. The vast majority of Tourette's cases are in children and adolescents, and rarely does it continue into adulthood.
969557 tn?1314370614 After 1 year I quit because I developed tics in my neck wich became very painful and the doctors thought it was a sideeffect. It has never stopped since. I was using Orap for a while, which worked, but I became very tired of it and was sleeping all the time. Stopped using it when I got diagnosed with hep c, not to cause damage at my liver. Now I get 4 injections of Botox in my nech every three months, but are a bit worried about eventually loosing the strength in my neck.
Avatar n tn By the age of 12 he had several different tics motor and vocal. By this point I changed pediatricians and his new doctor caught it right away and referred us to a neurologist. Even in school when he was asked to stop the noises he could just for a moment, and then begin the tic even worse, until he was asked to leave the room. He has whistled, made clearing throat sounds, yell out words and phrases, severely jerking his head as if to head bunt, roll eyes, these are just some of the tics.
Avatar n tn I also have three children, the oldest and youngest affected by tics, and the middle (son) not. My oldest was put on Ritalin for elementary school. He had tics, and they stopped when he was taken off Ritalin. My youngest son never was put on any medication, he has tics that come and go. My middle child (a son) has no tics, and no ADHD. Best wishes.
Avatar f tn Most kids are diagnosed between 3rd and 4th grade, but they would have to have both vocal tics and motor tics for at least one year prior. My kids are now 14 yrs, 10 yrs, 7yrs, and 19 months old. All three older girls have been diagnosed. My third daughter was diagnosed at 3 1/2 yrs old, my oldest at 8 yrs old, and my middle daughter at 9 yrs old. My son has not been diagnosed yet. He doesn't seem to have motor tics yet, but it sounds like he has had a few vocal tics already.
Avatar n tn My 3 yr old son is currently being put through a whole set of tests to rule out seizures, vision problems, etc. He has developed rapid eye blinking which is increasing in episodes. We also noticed during some of these episodes that he rolls his top lip under or seems to be biting it. His pediatrician suspects he has developed "Tics" but a confirmed diagnosis has not been given.
Avatar f tn My son is 8 years old now and we noticed his tics when he was about 6. Initially, his tics included opening his mouth wide, rolling and bobbing his head, stretching his neck and moving his wrists. Eventually, he started hopping a bit, extending his arms and having vocal tics. When he was 7, I noticed that his tics were significantly reduced five days into a trip to the Caribbean. The following summer which happened to be very sunny, it seemed that again the severity of his tics was reduced.
Avatar n tn However, within the past year she has started displaying frequent motor tics and recently vocal tics. Her motor tics started with blinking/rolling her eyes. They have progressed to neck shrugs and hand twists. Lately, she makes a "un" gutteral sound. The vocal tics are occuring as often as 1-2 times a minute. Is there any connection between her early seizures and tics?
Avatar n tn My daughter (12 years old) has been diagnosed with TS since 5 years of age. Her tics usually last about 3 to 4 months before changing to a different tic. Some we have seen come back and some she has only had once. Example, eye blinking was her first tic at age 5. It came back at age 8 and has not come back since (not to say it won't). She just recently went through a very ruff tic where she would thrust her head out at an odd angle.
