PLEASE ....EVERYONE....BE CAREFUL... Even tho clonidine is probably one of the greatest detox meds available, you shouldnt self medicate with it (if possible). To clarify, clonodine IS a GREAT detox drug, but I cant emphasize enough to you all...try not to take this into your own hands without medical consultation.
I have been taking Ativan for the persistent anxiety/restlessness/insomnia. For the past 10 days or so, I have only taken 1 - 1/2 of a 5mg tab. in the evening so that I can relax, and then sleep. It's worked out real well, but I don't want to do this indefinitely. So I decided to stop today and instead took .1 mg clonidine in the evening. I have had the clonidine for a week, but have never taken it because the Ativan works like a charm.
Can anyone give me some information on using clonidine for withdrawl? Like how much to take and how often and what dose.

Hey I just read your post and joined. I wanted to know how well it went and how you are doing today? I hope everything went well and you're healthier!
yeah, you get it from your doc. i was lucky enough to have a friend who's doc just gave her a script, but then she decided to go on Sub. the bottle says .1mg 3x a day. i am taking in halves, just to see how it goes... (i'd prefer to take less than prescribed if I can..) all i can tell you is it's day 2 and i just went for a walk. can you imagine? i am tired now tho, and sneezy. but fatty lost 3 lb's in 2 days, so i ain't complainin' :-) Good luck everyone who is coming off the pills.
0.1 mg tab, 2 times a day to help with the withdrawal symptoms. He's also prescribed Tramadol 50 mg tab, 4 times a day. I also told him I had been depending on the hydrocodone to get to sleep, so he prescribed Ambien to help with that too. I showed him my plan to step-down off the hydrocodone by decreasing by small increments every three days and he was very impressed with my plan. They I sheepishly smiled and said, "IF I can stick to it.
I am working on getting off the pain meds and put on something less addictive, My choice. My doctor has me trying 0.1mg Clonidine along with all the other stuff I take. Also I take 1 30mg tab in the morning and halves to little less than half about 2 or 3 hours there after of the pain med. When is a good time to take the Clonidine ? I am taking 25 mg of atenolol at night for hypertension along with .2mg of clonidine. I just started taking the atenolol two months ago and it knocks me out. The Dr just increased it to 50mg. I took it and my husband had the hardest time waking me up. When I finally did come around I felt disconnected. The kind of feeling you get when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the restroom and you lay back down and you're out as soon as your head huts the pillow.
The best way to come off of this medication is to taper very slowly down to minute amounts of the drug. This can be challenging with the higher dose tabs. If you have a 2mg tab, you will want to break the tab into 1/4's. This will give you .5mg doses. Start off by dropping your dose from 2 mg to 1 mg and go with the lower dose for at least a week. Then drop it down to .75mg and stick with that for at least a week. Do this until you get down to at least .
From day one has caused me severe mental anguish and my health care plan won't help me get off of it. I have been dropping down by my self last month a dr gave me clonidine to help cause my heat and bp was out of control. A different Dr just raised the clonidine to .1 mg 6 times a day. Originally was given it 1/2. Tab only in eve. I have gone to ER for help several timed to no avail. My primary Dr said she didn't know how to help me as she does not usually work with methadone.
Can you imagine someone with normal-low BP taking a .2mg clonidine tab? Not a great idea. The wd's won't kill ya, but doing that will.
I have spoke to his doctor and she said I could increase the clonidine from 1 1/2 tab to two. Zoloft 1/2 tab. I find him OCD allot getting upset and moody and starting arguments, depressed. We live in Ny Dutchess County if anyone can help.
Also, your pharmacy keeps a tab on the refills of pain medications. Please ask your GP to explain this to you. Hope this helps. Take care! Since last 6 months my BP is in range of 130/80 to 160/100. I am having Arkamin (clonidine), Minpress xl 5 and teleact D( teliminstran Hydrochloride) and alprax 0-5 for insomainia. Since a fortnight my BP is elevated and i am having a mild chest pain some time. Other conditions are gastric stomach and neck pain. I somewhere read that minpress side effects may cause chest pain. Can i replace minpress with atenol.
For this condition, clonidine is often used alone. For the treatment of alcohol withdrawal, clonidine is usually combined with benzodiazepine tranquilizers such as Librium, Valium, Xanax, or Ativan. This medication may also be used to ease withdrawal symptoms associated with the long-term use of narcotics, alcohol and nicotine (smoking). In addition, clonidine has also be used for migraine headaches, hot flashes associated with menopause, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
) Clonidine was a life saver for me. Make sure to monitor your BP and slow dosing if you ever feel dizzy or lightheaded.
You should really ask you're dr for clonidine, it works wonders for the hot flashes and it kept me from relapsing....It will also help you tapper off the sub..
If this is true for you, try getting a clonidine script from a doctor. It's a very cheap medication and well help some.
Im a 37 yr old female that's been on Lortab 10/500 for a year now. Dose is 1 tab 3 times a daily. But over the past few months I've gotten up to 6-7 a day. I'm so ready to quit!!! I don't think I have the willpower to taper because if they're available I take them. So I just took my last dose and going to enjoy my last good night of sleep for awhile. I have restless legs anyways so that's the worst part I'm anticipating.
Do you think its ok to continue low dose clonidine (1/2 of a .1 mg tab, 3 times a day) for awhile until this subsides??
Your endorphin system's changed somehow -- lucky break, but I wouldn't press your luck ... My BP is fine with a tab of clonidine, I feel kind of worn-out, but sitting at home isn't helping that much anymore -- so it's off to work on Tuesday.
It is used for HTN (hypertention) but it is also used for W/D symptoms fron PCP. It works really well if you taper and use the Clonidine. Clonidine is used for short term HTN to get a BP (blood pressure down) so if you note your BP going up due to W/D you could ask for a short term use of Clonidine to bring your BP down, HTN is one of the W/D symptoms.
But, to stop the Hydro I would cut them in half and take a half instead of whole tab how ever many times a day; then cut the number of times I took the half tab in half. Then when I get down to taking a half a tab twice a day I'd stop cold turkey. it helped if I had something else to ease the wd like an antidepressant, but then they can be hard to get off of, too. I guess, just try the reduction method. I hope that helps!
I was on oxycontin for pain for about five years, then switched to percoset to try and step down to one tab, and I was able to quit, but took up taking percoset again in about a months time. that was 18 months ago, and now I am dealing with the remaining symptoms after quitting.
I took 1/2 to 3/4 of a 10mg tab for only 10 months. I simply got hooked on a good night's sleep. After detoxing from vikes I felt it's time to quit Ambien next. I didn't think much of it as being a problem (?) I was wrong again! My doc's taper program has been going on for 3 weeks now. I have 2 weeks left.
After getting laid off (totally unrelated) i vowed to quit. It has been 12 days since my last Tab. I took a cpl morphine a day for the 1st week( honestly i dont like them at all) Honestly they helped taper with the withdrawals symptoms. It has now been 5 days from any opiates at all (which is where i really started).
