clonidine for children with anxiety

i am a memeber of a social group for kids with aspergers, a few months ago a few of the mothers were talking about their children taking clonidine the moms noticed favorable results, i am familiar with this drug, i did not know that developmental pediatric doctors, are now putting aspie kids on clonidine, how do you feel about this?

I just wanted to say that my psychiatrist just prescribed clonidine for anxiety. I am on Klonopin also. I couldn't find much info on using clonidine for anxiety, but at least now I know it's been prescribed for other people with anxiety too. I do NOT have high blood pressure.

Her pediatrician said for her to go on the Straterra even though its for ADHD because kids with anxiety are also treated with it. He also said there is no use in increasing the zoloft since it hasn't worked. He said he would only increase as she got older if it were working but since it hasn't worked then to try the Straterra. I am so confused because they each keep telling me the opposite. What is your opinion on the Straterra?

I take clonidine .2 three times a day and have been for over a year for blood pressure and intially to help with withdrawls as I tapered my dose of methadone down from 100-120mgs a day to 30mg. I still have to take it do to my hypertension, so first thing I would check is his blood pressure, just to make sure that it isnt high. After about 1month of taking clonidine there is hardly any sedating feeling as long as you take it as prescribed, but it can be abused just like any medication.

I would think if my blood pressure goes down and heart rate, it would have a calming effect. I take 10mg a day of Lexapro for anxiety (have for a few years). Have had no anxiety when on Lexapro...except for now as I go through lortab withdrawals...and the anxiety is as bad as before when I had to start the Lexapro.

For the last 5 yrs I've been taken the clonidine patch for high BP, no side effects, but the PVC's are still there off and on.

1mg at 10am, 4 pm since i started and trazodone 100mg at night for sleep... anyone have experience with these? ive heard clonidine if you just stop taking it it can spike your blood pressure... and trazodone is addictive? i dunno.... anyway any comments would help.. i was gonna start today by reducing the trazodone in half and tomorrow cut back to just one clonidine a day for 3 more days... sound alright?

hi.....i have never used clonidine but it's suppose to be for high BP and also can be used for anxiety from what i've read. I am on a diff med for high BP. Good luck and hope it works for you! i've read that it helps alot of people calm down thru WDs.

There are several non Narcotic meds you can take to lesson the withdrawals one is clonidine it will help with the anxiety like symptoms Potassium supplements can help with the RLS just be ready to feel like you have the worst flu.

mutlivitamins and still prozac which is cut down from 10mg to 5mg to wean him off, he was on concerta 36mg for adhd, clonidine .1mg to help with sleep and prozac10mg to combat severe side effects, then after starting prozac. he was chewing on the inside of his lower lip so bad, 2 weeks later and he now has two scars..

For me, the clonodine made me really tired. I could only take it at nighe or when i was going to sleep. It will make you weak and tired, but it will help with chills and anxiety....its a good help to w.d.....

I went from a 2yr hydro habit to ct with little phys symptoms thanks to neurontin. Took it for 3 days and on day 4.

I am trying to alter his diet since I have read this online as a possible cause, but actually we feel lost and would like to help him, but do not know where to start. He is on Clonidine and has been for awhile and it has not helped with the tics, for they seem to be getting worse. Please advise on some possible solutions and please list any support groups in chicago northwest suburbs where we might find support and answers. Thank you for your time.

I was taking Clonidine pills (2mgs 2xday)for w/d from smoking. I began taking it in March and it works very well for the sweats and makes you feel pretty good, but I started to wonder as time went on why I couldn't sleep, and I mean At All, and why I was a nervous wreck! My doc said I could use it "as needed" so I was using it erratically. I finally looked up the side effects and everything I listed above were side effects of Clonidine.

I have used both medications, clonidine is relatively harmless and does help with opiate withdrawls. That's not to say it something to take too lightly, but even people with normal blood pressure can benefit greatly during your withdrawl period. At first they can make you feel a little drowsy, but after a little bit those side effects go away. As for the ativan, it will for sure help with anxiety and sleep issues, but we must all take benzo's with caution.

I ran out two weeks early. I was honest with my dr and he put me on clonidine 3 pills a day for 3 days and a patch. It worked I almost feel like my old self. When he refills my meds next week I'm going to not take them unless I am in extreme pain. Learned my lesson!

If you are at the start of your w/ds then I would talk to the DR about getting a few prescribed during your detox..They work for Anxiety & help with Sleep. I got mine finally prescribed after I went 22 days of High Anxiety & No Sleep coming off of 3 meds at once back in 2012. I could only take it at Night!!!! Now almost 2 years later I had some Heart Procedures and have learned alot about these BP Meds.

1mg of Clonidine, 2 pills twice a day. It helped me with the terrible anxiety and self loathing I was going through in my brain. Also it's good for blood pressure, because I heard when you stop taking these hard core meds c/t, it elevates your blood pressure. So thank God, that helped me somewhat.... Then he put me on Flexaril which is a mild, non-narcotic muscle relaxer that took the edge off the rls and I also had my arms that were restless and having me jump out of my skin.

Clonidine has absolutely been helping with me! I havnt taken ativan, but I'm taking neurontin along with the clonidine..they both make you sleepy, so just watch for that.

Does clonidine really help with easing some of the yucky wd feelings??

lol just wanted to let everyone that responded to usarmymedic post that I went to my doc actually he sent me to the detox center for the VA I did a 7 day tapper with methadone. Now I really have not felt the w/d all that bad plus I got the clonidine and anti depressants and something for the RLS so there doing me right I am off of the habit forming drugs and on my way to a clean and sober life. I thank everyone for the suggestion about the clonidine it helps allot.

I posted this in my long long post about opioid withdrawals but no luck so I thought I would do a new thread.... I am coming off percocet 7.5\325 2 - 5 x a day and oxy 20 mg 2 - 3 x a day for the past couple years. I have a script for clonidine .1 which isn't doing much so I called my regular doc and he is going to put me on Klonopin ( Dosage unknown until I get script tomorrow). From what I can tell these are 2 totally different drugs. Has anyone used Klonopin for opioid withdrawls?

I thought it was best to go on a anxiety meds. I used Effexor and was on it for 10 years. it is for generalized anxiety disorder. I worked really well for me. I used the Xanax when I feel extremely panicky. go for counseling, talk and vent as much as possible in a safe environment, go to alanon, exercise, eat healthy, make sure you get plenty of rest.

I,ve been taking clonidine for my methadone detox & it.s not my drug of choice, but it really does take the edge off, I only take 1 pill prior to betime, this helps me sleep & lowers my high anxiety. I,ve been taking it for 6 days, & spoke with my addiction specialist yesterday regarding worrys about dependecy on it, she told me not to worry about taking it for a additional 4-5 days, after that I can cut my dosage in half then stop & switch to a more natural form of sleep aid.

All the meds you mention (save for Clonidine, which is prescribed off label at the time for ADHD) are stimulants -- which can make anxiety symptoms worse. I have read that for children with severe anxiety and ADHD medications like Strattera, or other antidepressants/ antianxiety medications, can often be much more beneficial than standard stimulants. I would try some additional medications to see if you can find one that works.

Wow Jeni I'm not sure. The only time I took Clonidine was for my high blood pressure. I've heard that Clonidine helps with a lot of symptoms of withdrawal including cravings. My doctor gave me Zofran 8 mg for nausea. It worked really well. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hang on for a while.
