My five year old son has high functioning autism and ADHD. He is now potty trained but can be quite hyperactive before bedtime and has a hard time winding down at night. We have tried everything to calm him down and have a good bedtime routine. He gets plenty of fresh air and exercise. He is on 20 mg of ritilan during the day. His psychiatrist prescribed 1 tablet of clonidine before bedtime to help him fall asleep and stay asleep. The medication has worked for this.
Thank you for your comments. The psychiatrist is supposed to be an autism specialist, and there are not too many in our city who claim that. My daughter is getting her masters in Pub Admin and is researching insurance coverage for autism--it is such a fight between insurers and schools as to who should pay for services, and meanwhile our kids are the ones suffering.
My son went on ADHD meds and they also give him clonidine to calm him down, if they do use clonidine for your son give only what the Dr says it is a med that slows the heart down and to much can stop the heart. My son has calmed down some he is 6 and been on meds since he was 4. He now only takes the Clonidine at bedtime.
Take him to a specialist, there are many places that deal with that now. He can't help what he is doing, so try to be patient.
My 4 year old seems to be constantly thirsty..he can go through a gallon of fluid a day if we let him.. Someone I talked to mentioned this may be juvenile diabetes.. What is juvenile diabetes and what are other symptoms? We thought maybe he was dehydrated thats why he was drinking so much but we took away any juices and milk and he still drank as much..
If one looks at the history of treatment of young children with autism, one finds a long list of treatments that have been espoused to be the next cure for autism. Many of these treatments have been embraced with no scientific evidence to back them up.
I am taking clonidine for my Subutex withdrawal. It has definetly helped with the anxious creepy crawly feeling. It also helped with hot flashes.
I wasn't given any info on not to mix it with pain meds, but you may want to call you doctor to find out. Or even a pharmacist might be able to tell.

The genetic testing was to possibly find out why he has Autism and to provide data for research purposes. His father and I have also given blood for these tests but have not been given our results. I find the whole thing very interesting. I do believe that Autism is a genetic disorder. If blood tests could be refined for the purpose of diagnosis, it would be quite helpful. I've read that some studies have linked this specific deletion with autism.
1mg at 10am, 4 pm since i started and trazodone 100mg at night for sleep... anyone have experience with these? ive heard clonidine if you just stop taking it it can spike your blood pressure... and trazodone is addictive? i dunno.... anyway any comments would help.. i was gonna start today by reducing the trazodone in half and tomorrow cut back to just one clonidine a day for 3 more days... sound alright?
I need help. My son is only 3. He will be 4 in July. A month after his third birthday he was actually diagnosed with ADHD. I understand this diagnosis its rarely given before 5 due to"toddler symptoms" being similar. So I hope that gives you some idea of how severe this is. The neurologist that diagnosed him said it was the worst case he had seen in his 20 years.
Hi all. I'm a 32 year old single mom of an 11 year old with high functioning autism and a 2 year old. For the past year I've been prescribed vicodin, norco and finally percocet from pain due to ovarian cysts and severe scar tissue. I finally had a hysterectomy in May of this year. The pain in now gone, but I am having the worst time getting of the pain meds. I am down to 2-4 10mg norco a day.
I went to see my doc and he wants me to continue taking the conidine and ativan but to reduce the clonidine to .1 for two days, then 05 for a day then stop it. He advised just to take the avtivan at night until I can fall alseep on my own. He also gave me some roxicet and told me to take 3 today, 2 tomorrow and one the next day. He claims this will help me with cravings until I get into rehab where I can get something tradition for the craving...I start rehab on Monday and it lasts 5 weeks.....
Clonidine was initially used as an antihypertensive but it has come to be used to treat a variety of behavioral disorders including tics, symptoms of ADHD, aggression, PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, or sleep problems.
