Avatar f tn You are certainly not alone in this and emotionality is certainly not unique to children diagnosed with autism during the teenage years. I’m sure you want your grandson to be happy and healthy and affect changes like you are describing becomes even more difficult to deal with if the child is unable to tell you why he or she is upset.
536849 tn?1213582734 my nephew is two months away from turning four, he has shown signs of having autism, and is awaiting an appointment with a specialist he has recently begun eating his own feces...........could this be another sign of the autism?
16638194 tn?1449934941 I am in desperate need of some insight regarding medication for Autism and ADHD. My son is 7 years old. He started out on Risperdal when he was 4 but we quickly took him off because he quickly ballooned by 15 lbs. in 1 month. We eventually ended up on Abilify and Tenex (Guanfacine) and he's been taking that combination for about 3 years. Now we are at the point where those two meds were not working at all and we were already at the approved dosage limits.
Avatar f tn My five year old son has high functioning autism and ADHD. He is now potty trained but can be quite hyperactive before bedtime and has a hard time winding down at night. We have tried everything to calm him down and have a good bedtime routine. He gets plenty of fresh air and exercise. He is on 20 mg of ritilan during the day. His psychiatrist prescribed 1 tablet of clonidine before bedtime to help him fall asleep and stay asleep. The medication has worked for this.
Avatar n tn These behaviors are not caused by autism. Many children with autism do not behave this way, and other children who are not autistic do engage in such extreme behaviors. The behaviorists teach us that these behaviors are shaped by environment and by reaction, that they are learned behaviors. But if that is true (and I am sure that it is) who is teaching these children to act aggressively or in a self-injurious way?

Avatar f tn New studies have 100% shown that the delivery of the child has nothing to do with autism. I have two children with autism, my first son was an extremely bad delivery and we both almost died. My third child was a perfect pregnancy and delivery and she still has autism. My husband has asperges and so does his other son to his previous marriage. 100% genetic!

Avatar f tn I worked with children with autism for about 9 years before I had my first child. I do have to say, that I didn't notice any symptoms of autism until after he had his 2 year old vaccinations. My 5 year old has the same diagnosis as your daughter of mild autism.
1386655 tn?1452097056 ll really have to explain much,te brother most likely picks up that his brother is a little different. Avatar n tn Hi Teresa, I am an ABA therapist for children with autism. I would recommend going to a developmental psychologist and getting an official diagnosis. Autism is a spectrum disorder and is very different from child to child.
1194672 tn?1267449568 The technical distinction for a diagnosis of High Functioning Autism is based on IQ scores. Children with an IQ above 70 are considered high functioning. But most clinicians use the term in their own way, which is what makes it even more confusing. High Functioning in general refers to the fact that there are no significant cognitive delays.
Avatar f tn This is a common question in any family with someone diagnosed with autism. The strongest causal evidence points to genetics playing a role and children with a sibling with autism are more likely to have autism than children who don't have a sibling with autism. The actual percentage chance is unknown at this point.
Avatar n tn Neuroimaging work has found that children with autism aged 2 to 4 had larger brains with more cerebral and cerebellar white matter and more cerebral cortical grey matter than typically developing children of the same age (Courchesne et al., 2001). However, Carper and colleagues (e.g., Carper et al., 2002) found that children with autism gain substantially less grey and white matter in the frontal lobes from early to late childhood relative to typically developing children.

Avatar n tn s vaccines has not been present in Canada since at least 1990. The rates of autism in those children born after 1990 in Canada have increased 2. There have been studies in Britain and Denmark showing that over the past ten to fifteen years in those nations where mercury was taken out of vaccines, autism rates have increased OTOH 3. mercury is a known and proven neurotoxin; thimerosal contains mercury; thimerosal is present in vaccines. 4.
Avatar n tn Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) process sound and language a fraction of a second slower than children without ASDs, and measuring magnetic signals that mark this delay may become a standardized way to diagnose autism.... In the current study, Roberts and colleagues used magnetoencephalography (MEG), which detects magnetic fields in the brain, similar to the way electroencephalography (EEG) detects electrical fields.

1415407 tn?1389254933 Tylenol was introduced in the 80s which correlates with the sudden, skyrocketing increase in children being diagnosed with ADHD/Autism. Just saying.
Avatar f tn Several standardized tests and checklists have been developed to help assess the behavior of children with possible autism. These tests are also intended to further evaluate children in whom autism is considered possible (due to parent concerns, clinical clues, and/or positive screening test results). These assessment instruments can be used in various ways in assessing children with possible autism.
Avatar f tn Hi. Genetics does play a role in autism and it often does run in families. The statistic from Autism Speaks, the organization that works extensively with autism is that 15 percent of all autism is genetic. Most often though, it is a combination of genetic risk and environmental issue (such as the mom's job, age, etc.). I would not assume your children will have autism. Take issues as they come and deal with them then. Try not to let anxiety seep into your enjoyment of your children.
