Avatar f tn Please help. My son is autistic. He has bowel issues. He can hold in an enema. He is on several meds. Adderall, Metformin, Risperdol, clonidine. I'm wondering if the weight gain is causing the adderall to be less effective. He's on 20mgs in the morning and 10mgs in the afternoon. He complains about he can't focus any more. It's making him very upset and very hard to deal with. I'm at my wits end. He will only deal with me. I feel like I'm a terrible mother.
1039200 tn?1314912008 However, I do take other medications such as Clonidine that can cause weight gain and diabetes runs in my family (my mother has pre diabetes, my aunt has diabetes that is already insulin resistant) so I am cautious as to my diet just to prevent this regardless. If a person has the inherited traits for it they are more likely to be susceptible to acquire it as well.
Avatar f tn It does make sense to take Abilify during the day if its keeping a person awake at night as it can be activating. If not it won't make a difference as regards weight gain. Abilify is the least likely out of the antipsychotics to cause weight gain. I have posted about the antipsychotics in development that won't do this but they still are not approved medications yet. If you were diagnosed with bipolar with psychotic features you need an antipsychotic.
Avatar f tn Well that's very great news. Some of us are on medications that don't cause weight gain and it is much better. But some of us still are and the medications still work and don't cause other problems. For myself, the mood stabilizer I take Clonidine causes weight gain. I bought some chocolates today and I had already eaten dessert. I was going to snack on them anyway but I told myself not to or the weight gain would start so I didn't.
Avatar f tn I had some problem with weight gain from Seroquel and especially Risperdal. Abilify is less likely to do that but from what you say the Seroquel is tolerable except for the weight gain. Complex. It is important to keep the weight gain in check so I'd suggest having your psychiatrist refer you to a nutrionist and definitely get a test (at least once a year) for blood sugar levels and the like (on any antipsychotic).
Avatar f tn For how long have you been on it? I did not gain weight on suboxone, but it did make me tired alot and nod at times. Maybe this is why you've gained weight? Do you take it for pain or as a maintenance drug? Kicking suboxone is very possible. I am 6 months clean from 2 1/2 years on suboxone. From all I've heard from actual people who used it the best way is to taper down to a tiny sliver or crumb of suboxone, then take that crumb or sliver every few days, then none.
142722 tn?1281533616 Dr put me on a 5 day taper program which I think is fast but he says it doesn't matter how many pills I was taking his program would work. So he gave me 13pills and here is the program: 3 3 times a day for two days 2 2 times a day for two days 1 1 time a day for three days He gave me 3 days supple of clonidine .1mg. Does clonidine help with w/d???? I start the program tomorrow and I am really scared and hope it works.
Avatar f tn Or when on lithium took that and trazadone. I also take clonidine as needed for anxiety none of those cause weight gain. What ever you do if you dont want to gain weight don't take seraquil I gained 20lbs in one month and my Dr changed that to the trazadone.
Avatar m tn Thank you very much. I wonder how do you sleep? Your note gives me incougement and if I had a place to call home things would be a lot easier. I refuse my families request to return to a abusive relationship. So now I a out cast and they are miss guided and hurtful on top of every thing every kind word means much to me right now. Thank you again.
918275 tn?1254068752 All I know is that it seems that all that has happened for me is that I traded one set of problems for another set (weight gain, depression over weight gain, Hoplessness, etc.) of issues. Primarily depressed and fatigued and hopeless, which is what I started out to be and is what I am still, only now overweight. I was skinny and miserable, why would I exchange that for fat and miserable or make that fat and way more miserable because of now being way overweight on top of everything else.
539549 tn?1315981662 I have had depression for awhile, and exercising definately helps. On days with high anxiety or depression it sometimes takes a few tries to even make it out of the door to the gym. For me, i might change my outfit 2 or 3 times before I successfully actually WALK through the door, spend an hour in the mirror fussing or walk in circles around the house in a daze. Either way, once I make it out that door to the gym and start exercising, my heart rate elevates and I start sweating...
899491 tn?1243773627 I exercise more and eat a healthy diet. My hardest thing is the night time munchies after I take my medications. The doctor says I should have a time like 7PM and not eat after that. I am having trouble. I am not hungry in the day.
Avatar n tn We were just prescribed this for my son who is 8. He spent the last 3 years fighting outbursts which included throwing things, hitting others, screaming, crying, and not being able to cope with things he didnt like the answer to. He started Trileptal in August and we saw huge improvement. but 2 months ago the doc added Guanfacine and Clonidine to help. then things became bad again. And guanfacine is not easy to come off of. We lately we have had outburts like previous to trileptal.
19740770 tn?1483557078 Many meds do cause weight gain in some people -- you can tell if your med is one of them by looking on the manufacturer's website or looking at a site such as WebMD. But your excuse doesn't hold water -- people who go to university probably have more work than any on-line offering, as the courses are usually more rigorous at top universities, but people still find time to go out and play. I always did, even when in graduate school.
675329 tn?1297288378 But weight gain is a very common medication side effect. It can be managed with a proper diet and generally dealt with that way. Lovaza ia an anti-cholesterol medication that since it works like fish oil is an FDA approved medication used off label for bipolar experimentally. You could ask your psychiatrist about that. As for your other post I take Klonopin myself and have for ten years. As long as a person is responsible, it can be taken safely.
213991 tn?1214273019 You will be abl eto absorb more nutrients into your body once you quit, just remember to keep your apetite under control so that you don not gain a lot of weight. The weight gain depends to on how long you have smoked.
Avatar f tn The most important variable to consider is the effectiveness of the medication. If it is addressing the goals but the side effect is a problem, talk with the prescriber about alternatives that might be less likely to result in weight gain. Your son's age limits the options. The first and second generation antipsychotic medications, like Risperdal, tend to promote weight gain (via increased appetite) in many patients.
Avatar m tn I ran out two weeks early. I was honest with my dr and he put me on clonidine 3 pills a day for 3 days and a patch. It worked I almost feel like my old self. When he refills my meds next week I'm going to not take them unless I am in extreme pain. Learned my lesson!
Avatar n tn I also wanted to add Congratulations on the desire to gain your life back !! I'm sure you and your loved ones have missed you....
Avatar n tn Over the last several years she has had significant weight gain not loss. It does not seem possible that it is a misdiagnosis three times...but it is questionable to me why none of the medications work for her and none of the medications cause a loss of appetite, she actually seems to always to be hungry. I do not know where else to go...two psyhiatrists, one psychologist, and out family doctor...
Avatar f tn Actually the best drug for opiate detox is called Suboxone. You will not feel any withdrawls when you stop taking opiates and it will allow you to detox slowly while you gain your mental & emotional capacity back. The problem is that it is still not completely FDA approved and only certain approved docs can prescribe. You will have to call many of them in your area in order to find a Doc that is not predatory in the way he/she prices his treatment.
202665 tn?1248806733 I am still on some medications that can cause weight gain such as Clonidine and the basic way to get around weight gain is to not only eat a healthy diet as regards meals but to watch out for snacks that have a high fat, sugar or cholesterol content. Basically I don't buy them anymore so they stay out of the house so I don't eat them without thinking about it.
1033596 tn?1252519593 I don't want to play doctor here or anything, but I was in a similar situation for several years. My apartment got broken into, then I moved home, and then my house literally got hit by lightening. I started taking lexapro for the Post-Traumatic Stress. I'd always been a bit of a snacker and stress-eater, but I a burdensome amount of weight from it. I asked my doctor about other alternatives to the Lexapro, and she suggested Welbutrin.
Avatar f tn When I was taking Prozac I didnt gain weight.Paxcel made me gain some though.
