Clindamycin and yogurt

Common Questions and Answers about Clindamycin and yogurt

I recently had a wisdom tooth extraction and was prescribed clindamycin to prevent the extraction area from becoming infected. I was prescribed this medication on 5/28/2014. I was directed to take it 3x a day until it was all gone. I took it for about a week straight. I noticed while I was on the medication that I had very severe episodes of diarrhea and stomach cramping. I stopped taking the medication as of yesterday.
I feel like it won't go away. The diarrhea is not bloody or mucous like, and I feel no abdominal pain. I'm taking acidophilus and eating plain yogurt. Any suggestions?
I was prescribed Erythromycin and following that clindamycin. Approximately a week after I stopped the medication I had a sudden and severe onset of diarrhea. I waited several days and when it didn't stop I saw a family M.D. He ordered a stool culture and some additional tests on the stool all which came out negative. Initially he thought it was a result of the antibiotics however with the negative lab results he no longer believes this is the problem and wants me to get a colonoscopy.
I was not able to get my hands on Florastor or similar probiotics but I did consume yogurt and kefir. Will that help, or are supplements more efficient? Today I had a very long, loose stool after eating just a banana and slice of pizza. It does not seem like C Diff to me according to your answer, however, I'm scared that everything I'm eating is going right through me without being properly being absorbed by my body. What issues can this cause? Do you have any recommendations to combat this?
I remembered that clindamycin can cause bacterial dysbiosis so I started eating yogurt. In early September took 7 days of Flagyl for the loose BMs. No real improvement. Saw gastrointerologist in early September. She suspected bacteria because of the history of clindamycin and a clear Sigmoidoscopy (to 88cm) that I had in December of '04 for an unrelated issue that turned out not to be a problem. GI gave me 3 weeks of Flora-Q probiotic in September.
Calcium salts and magnesium salts that are present in food and dairy products can form chelates and impair absorption of some medications, however, this is not the case with clindamycin. clindamycin can be taken with or without food. They may have been thinking of tetracycline.
For months I tried everything between constant washing, cutting out unhealthy food, changing BC, eating plenty of yogurt and taking acidophilus pills. In August of the same year I decided to see an OB/GYN (different doctor). She ran another set of tests and this time I tested positive for trichomoniasis and was treated with a series of 4 pills. All symptoms seemed go away and a follow up test showed that I was clean. Everything within my body retuned to normal.
I just finished a course of clindamycin for a tooth infection, and as FTB4 said, it does not interact with levo. Listen to his advice about the probiotic and/or yogurt. clindamycin messed up my gut worse than any antibiotic I've ever taken (which isn't many). Also, is your sore throat and runny nose due to a bacterial infection? If it's due to a cold or the flu, both viruses, no antibiotic will help it. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses.
I have a abcessed tooth and dentist has put me on clindamycin. (been on the meds for only 24hrs) I have also just been diagnosed with strep and family doctor says that since I am on the clindamycin already this should clear up the strep infection as well. The tooth was very painful a few days ago, but now it does not hurt as much to bite down. The pain is now in my jaw line and is extremely tender...with or without touch.
many sufferers will hold the yogurt in their mouth for a good 30 to 60 seconds and continue the process until the yogurt is all gone. The next item you can pick up from your grocery store is garlic. Garlic, a natural antibiotic, can be either taken orally or, for those with a vaginal yeast infection, a clove can be inserted into the vagina every few hours.
I'm placing this in a post TX forum, but it also occurs to me that it may be useful for those who are considering treatment. (it may be off topic in this forum or thread, but it behooves people to make sure they are not vitamin deficient before treating- there are studies which show vitamin A or D can improve viral response) Anyway......
My guts haven't been right since taking clindamycin about a month ago. If I take acidophilus or eat yogurt it returns to brown for a day or 2 and then back to green. Not really painful, only when I get that cramp that says time to go. I don't have insurance so I can't afford to get scoped and all that stuff. Anyone ever have this? Is it serious and will it go away by itself?
Oh, 1 more thing, about the DIV, I'm thinking maybe that's my issue too, but only in that 1 spot because the treatment for it is hydrocortisone and clindamycin (vaginal). Every time I have a flare up, it takes clindamycin to make it go away. Good luck.
Eat some yogurt with live acidophiles in it to help keep your tummy settled and promote the good bacteria. If you don't like yogurt get the acidophiles capsules, but do take something like that. If you've been on the antibiotic for three or four days already and you haven't experienced any relief in pain, give your dentist a call. Hope this helps.
clindamycin antibiotic really kills just about everything and thats what doctors and dentists usually give you for bad tooth ache and/or abcess infection. I have been eating a lot of yogurt and acidophilus supplemnts so that may be not making my defecation problem any worse. But this is a problem that has been going on for several months now. I am lightheaded and fatiqued most of the time for months also. and I have gone from a 36" belt to a 32" one- i.e.
Have tried differin, retin-a, duac, also natural solutions such as tea tree oil, lemon, honey, coconut, eggs, yogurt, witch hazel. Also have tried systems such as proactiv and muriad to no avail. Have completely overhauled my diet- hardly any sugar, no white/ refined starches, very little dairy, no red meat, lots of veggies, lots of water. No caffine, little to no alcohol. Multi vitamin every day and extra Zinc, Calcium, and Magnesium. Plenty of sleep.
I know this is weird, but the taste of my discharge becomes bitter. After treatment of oral clindamycin and diflucan all my symptoms are relieved, sometimes for along time. I had read an article many yrs ago about chronic BV . I was first diagnosed with BV when I was 20, but I had no symptoms. Most of the time, doctors say they don't see any infection, but treat me any ways for BV because it does relieve my symptoms. I have been on on metrogel, 2 times a week, vaginally.
That is where most of the pain from this infection is coming from. It burns and sort of itches. The itching just started today and I've had this for 4 weeks. Most of the 4 weeks it wasn't diagnosed. I took Bactrim but that didn't work so I'm on cipro now. Is cipro a good antibiotic for this? Could this be impetigo? Any input is good, I'm desperate! I posted this in another group as well.
For the last 6 months I have been getting tearing (look like paper cuts) in my vaginal area (1/4 to 1/2 inch long). I get the tears at least once or twice a week and they last from 2-4 days, go away for a few days and then come back. They continue to occur in the same locations; 1. Inside the vaginal lips on the sides almost always in the crease (between the labia minora and majora?) 2. Between the anus and vaginal opening (perineum) 3. Above the clitoris in the "hood" area.
I have added yogurt to my diet. I have also used an applicator to inject yogurt into my vagina and even dipped a tampon in yogurt and inserted that. It eliminated the awful odor. - Cranberry Juice (Not cocktail.) I have drank maybe two gallons in the last month. - Rephresh Pro-B. I have started taking this probiotic two weeks ago. - Pearl IC. Another probiotic I started taking a week ago. - Summer's Eve (pH balance.) Switched my body wash. No more irritation.
well, with your two teeth gone i'm sure you're looking for something soft to eat and a GREAT suggestion right now would be yogurt. i perfer dannon active myself. the main reason is that the clindamycin is a very powerful antibiotic (my doctor put me on 450mg of clindamycin) the down side is clindamycin can kill everything in your body. that includes the good bacteria in your intestine called gut flora.
It was and has been horrible. Since then, I have been put on Advil, Hydrocodon-acetanino, and clindamycin. I've also seen my dentist who started a root canal on the tooth but just drilled a whole, did some drainage, not all, and left a sponge in it so it can fully drain. I'm supposed to go back next week to complete the full root canal. Anyway, the swelling has dropped a lot BUT I still have a hard knot of pus(I'm guessing) in my cheek. Should I ask if this can be drained?
I took bactrim and after 5 1/2 days had an intense allergic reaction of a burning sensation, needle pricking and numbness. They put me on clindamycin. I continued to have reactions, so guess they couldn't tell if it was the bactrim still in my system or also being allergic to clindamycin. Anyway, I was on some sort of antibiotic for 71/2 to 8 days. It's been 2 weeks since I stopped the 800mg/160mg 2x a day bactrim and the burning sensation is still there but much milder.
I immediately had diarhrea and vomitting. The antibiotic was switched to clindamycin. After two days of use the diarhrea returned, the nausea continued with a "burning hole" feeling in my stomach and I started vomitting. I stopped after three days use. After two weeks of these symptoms continuing I looked into symptoms of colonitis, etc. For the past three days I have started eating yogurt twice a day and started to see an improvement. Yesterday I felt great.
The exact cause for the change in type of bacteria is still not known, but it is can be due to IUD’s,multiple sex partners or having intercourse with a new partner. Treatment is by metronidazole((Flagyl, MetroGel) and clindamycin (Cleocin). They are available as pills or vaginal gels or creams but should be used under medical supervision. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
I have gone to a dermatologist once, and he prescribed me some antibiotics and 2 different creams, one facial cream with benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin, and one for my back. I forgot the active ingredients for that. But after spending a few hundred dollars on these medicines and not having really any improvement with my ance, I think it probably isn't the result of bacterial acne. I don't eat the healthiest but not the worst either.
Diagnosis can be confirmed after pelvic examination and microscopic examination of the vaginal discharge. Treatment is by metronidazole((Flagyl, MetroGel) and clindamycin (Cleocin). They are available as pills or vaginal gels or creams. Please do not use any vaginal douches. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor.
