I'm allergic to penicillin and sulfa. Dentist prescribed Clindamycin 150 mg for 10 days for infection in my tooth. Got hives, rash, swollen lips and extreme itching and blotches from head to toe. Was on vacation so stopped medication after 3 days of taking it. It is now 5 days taking benadryl and the hives and itching have not stopped. What is in the clindamycin that I may be allergic to?
Thank you so much for your response. May I also ask what length of time would I take the Biaxin? And is there any home treatment, Like garlic pills etc. that would help augment healing? ( since Biaxin is not considered the best treatment.) Although I'm stuck with that. And frankly, I was on the Clindamycin for weeks and that didn't get rid of the infection, so maybe a broad spectrum antibiotic will work for me. I sure hope so. thank you again for your advice.
Cephalexin (Keflex) is a good antibiotic as well. The similarity with penicillin is only important for people who are allergic to penicillin (as they will also be allergic to keflex). Personally, I would go with Azithromycin (or Clindamycin) if penicillin isn't working, but Cephalexin is different enough it might work. You can tell if its working if the pain/swelling go away in 4-5 days.
Two weeks ago I went to the barber and he shaved the back of my head with a clipper, then used a blade near the hairline on the back of my neck. Most of the time, after each visit I get a mild breakout of small pimples that go away in a few days. There was one located on the left side right at the line where the hair ends. it rubbed against my shirt and/or coat collar and became infected (after I picked at it).
I am allergic to Keflex, Zithromax, and Clindamycin, I was just prescribed amoxicillian, should I be concerned
I am afraid that the bacteria was not killed and will return. What do you all think? I am now allergic to bactrim, penicillin and possibly clindamycin, so are there any other antibiotics that can kill cellulitis should it return?
I would call your dr immediately and get switched to another antibiotic and see if you need to go to er. I am currently on penicillin for my tooth infection after root canal. It is working for me and not many issues.

1. May 10: Penicillin VK 500mg tab (6 days) and Metronidazole 250mg tab (7 days) 4x per day for both
2. Jun 6: Amoxicillin 500mg; 4 tablets immediately then 1 pill 3x per day (2 weeks)
3. Jun 21: Augmentin 875mg + 125mg additives, 2x per day (3 weeks)
4. Sep 16: Clindamycin 300 mg, 3x per day (16 days)
I am concerned by the number and duration of these antibiotics courses. I was on 5 weeks of continuous antibiotics in June/July.
I'm 24 years old and in good health. I went to my regular dentist on 1/13/06 and xrays showed a large abscess in tooth #10, as well as a smaller abscess in tooth #20. On 1/17/06 I had a RCT done on tooth #10, as well as an incision in the roof of my mouth behind that tooth to help extract the infection. On 1/19/06, I had a RCT done on tooth #20, with one 0.05mm post placed.

The swelling has not subsided yet even though he was on penicillin for 9 days and started clindamycin 2 days ago. Any ideas why the swelling has not gone away yet?
The doctor has prescribed doxycycline, clindamycin,some antihistamines and mupiderm ointment...the sores are on my buttocks and head of my penis.
About two days later I noticed I came down with a slight sore throat and the next day it was really bad, so that early friday morning I went to the Er because I noticed my tonsils were really swollen with pus spots on them, the doctor diagnosed me with strep throat and gave me 2 penicillin pills that night, I took four the next day that sunday I started to have really bad pelvic pain.
Thank you so much for the quick response. I wasn't sure if the amoxicillin would work since the penicillin didn't. I will note these medications and suggest them to my dentist. I don't understand why he is so adament about using the clindymiacin. I understand that it works for a lot of patients, but it really made me ill. Is periodontal disease a disease of the gums? My dentist said my gums and bone are fine. I just could never afford to keep going to the dentist to fix my teeth.
No facial swelling at least not yet. Went to one dentist and paid out of pocket who prescribed penicillin V 500mg. It took about a week and The Sensation went away. That was about 3 weeks ago. I had went to another dentist for a second opinion who also prescribed clindamycin. I figured I would keep that medicine and take only if it flared back up while I was waiting for dental insurance to kick in at some point. Well, still looking for a job and now it's starting back up.
On Jan 10 I had a titanium post inserted into my # 30, a previous root canal tooth (from several years ago). The next day I was in pain, and the pain continued to worsen, including some pretty severe jaw pain. The dentist adjusted the bite, then assumed it was infection, so put me on 10 day penicillin. Nearing the end of that, I developed swelling on the outside gum, the dentist put me on 7 day clindamycin.
I was allergic to the normal one they give (penicillin) so they had to give me clindamycin. They give you the antibiotic every 4 hours until you have your baby. I only needed it once. He came out beautiful and very healthy. It happens in every 1 out of 4 women, and as long as you get the antibiotic there is no reason to worry. Its just pretty much a bacteria you get. Just make sure if your water breaks go to the hospital right away so they can start the antibiotics.
So I was going to switch, and after I stopped, I broke out with about 200 zits on my chest, a yeast infection, and 6days later, those are both going on, along with still being itchy. I tried taking clindamycin, but every time (with liquids, food, hidden in soft foods, etc) the pill lodges in my throat, then burns it raw for days. This happens with everywhere pill. I also now have a metallic taste in my mouth.
t seem to have problems with doxycycline, amoxicillin or clindamycin. Clindamycin destroys my stomach though. I avoid cipro and zithromax.
In response to your question nothing was given for the swelling just to apply a ice pack to my face , I was given another antibiotic to take this was to replace the amoxicillin ( allergic to penicillin) this new antibiotic is clindamycin unfortunately could not continue on it due to "BAD,BAD stomach upset, contacted dentist office was told continue with the ice and just stop the medication oh and when can we schedule your next visit to finish the work on the tooth, crown etc.
I went back to the oral surgeon because the pain is so bad and he said it is healing nicely and gave me Percocet and said to give it a couple more days. It has been a week since I have had the tooth pulled and the pain is getting worse. I am taking 2 Percocet (325) every 4 hours and that isn’t taking the pain away. Only lasts about 2 hours. I can’t live like this, it is terrible. I don’t know what to do.
