Common Questions and Answers about Cipro tendon damage

cipro

Avatar f tn I took the antibiotic Cipro (which causes tendon pain and ruptures) and now have a bunch of problems with both ankles. I have achilles tendon pain, and I also have pain and swelling on the inside of my ankle and arch of foot. It hurts to move my toes back, and I can't stand on my toes at all (can't even get off the ground). I also have no balance and sway. If I walk one foot in front of the other (like a drunk driving test), I fall.

867582 tn?1311627397 One of the dangers causing disability to people who have taken these antibiotics, such as Cipro, is tendon rupture which can occur up to a year after stopping use of the drug. Usually it is the Achilles tendon that ruptures, but it could be any tendon in your arm, hand, or elsewhere which could cause permanent disability.
Avatar n tn Cipro can cause tendon problems - some have torn or broken the achilles tendon by stepping down too hard while taking Cipro. You will usually feel that the tendon is hard as a rock - if you feel that, wait to exercise, until you have stopped taking the antibiotic. You may have to switch to a different antibiotic - see your doctor.
Avatar m tn Yes Cipro can definately cause rythm issues. I cant remember where I read this but my doctor was going to give it to me until I showed him the info (that he did not have himself). So yes---In fact--since you brought it up--I have a new group called side effects of medications. Feel free to post your side effects there.

This seems to the to Tetracycline, Cephalox , ( or something like that) ... so, after they work it out, I will be on something.
443434 tn?1255891233 ve been seeing an opthamologist ever since and was diagnosed with vitreous detachment (which I had never even heard of before taking cipro). My question now is there anything to reverse the damage? I just want my former eyesight back. I especially notice it now after a snow fall - it's so white outside. This all happened last April. If anyone has suggestions as to how to restore what was destroyed I'm all ears!

Avatar n tn Hello I'm wondering when it's safe to resume exercise after using the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. I do intense cardio (trail-running or versa-climber), and lift about three times per week, alternating days with sunday off. I'm in pretty good physical condition with the exception of a bulging L5-S1 disc and occasional sciatica on my right side.
Avatar n tn Make sure your vet knows about its use before giving it to your dog because several dangerous potential adverse reactions can occur. Cipro has the potential to cause tendon rupture and in animals under 2 years of age it also has a detrimental effect on the bones and joints. It can cause convulsions in any dog and seizures in dogs with central nervous system disorders.
Avatar n tn On day 15 I developed severe total body aching. I took all 20 days, eventually recovered from the pneumonia but then suffered tendon pain primarily in my elbows and knees for 2 years. During the time I took the drug, I had a lot of muscle twitching. One year ago I started having random shooting pain that has progressed. Recently I saw my MD and she ordered several blood tests and MRI to look for MS and other peripheral neuropathy causes. All blood tests and the MRI were normal.

Avatar f tn Pain in the joints and elsewhere are common side effects of Levaquin. Most times this wears off (the good news), but there are instances of long-term damage from this particular antibiotic (that's the bad news). Statistics are on your side.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have problems with UTI and kidney infections on a regular basis. I have been on Cipro on and off since 1994. Cipro has allways worked very well for me. I have not experienced side effects from this drug. I have had other antibiotics prescribed to me that did have some negative side effects. In my case Sulfa drugs causes hives. From 1994 up to 2003, I used to come down with UTI and kidney infections that required hospitalizations with a frequency of about every 3 to 4 months.

Avatar n tn Certain collagen-rich areas of the body (such as tendons) have been well documented as being susceptible to damage by Cipro. The vitreous of the eye is largely composed of collagen fibrals which are likely as susceptible to attack by Cipro as tendons. The association between Cipro and eye damage has not been established definitively as yet. However, you should report your case to Dr. Frederick Fraunfelder at the Eye Drug Registry. The registry's email is ***@****.
1994720 tn?1352742233 Also, since the surgery and a sepsis infection that nearly took my life, I get severe nerve, tendon, and joint pain after eating primarily proteins and am exhausted all the time. I am sick of always being the mystery diagnosis patient! Also, my iron and ferritin levels have been on the low end, though I take Slow FE and cook with an iron skillet. And, my Alpha 2 and Beta globulins are low now. Any feedback???
