Cipro and hives

Common Questions and Answers about Cipro and hives

cipro

Hi, I have problems with UTI and kidney infections on a regular basis. I have been on Cipro on and off since 1994. Cipro has allways worked very well for me. I have not experienced side effects from this drug. I have had other antibiotics prescribed to me that did have some negative side effects. In my case Sulfa drugs causes hives. From 1994 up to 2003, I used to come down with UTI and kidney infections that required hospitalizations with a frequency of about every 3 to 4 months.
Took another benadryl which helped for about 4 hours (and knocked me out again) and the hives and swollen lip came back. Called in again and he said to switch off the Benadryl and try Loratadine. This does not seem to be controlling it so well (took it 2 hours ago). So its been about 30 hours since the last Cipro dose. If it was indeed a Cipro allergy, how long before it should go away?
My husband has been diagnosed with diverticulitis and is being treated with Flagyl and Cipro. He now has a fever and terrible stomach pain and a hives like rash on his face and a slight fever. He has had three doses and I am wondering what to do.
Has anybody been on Cipro for like a sinus infection and noticed that they feel worse as far as the liver goes? I just finished up a 1 week dose of this stuff and taking the last one today made me feel lousy. It had been making me feel bad since the the 2nd day, but this last day, has been the worst day on it. Liver pain, abdominal pain in my left side, too and feeling slightly nauseated and just all the around more flu-like.
I was prescribed Cipro for a UTI on wednesday. I started taking it and noticed little bumps on my vagina. I had all my STD screenings done over 8 months ago, and have been with the same partner since then. Could this just be a slight skin irritation to the Cipro or is it something I should be more concerned about? Thanks in advance.
Hi Diane, Just finished reading your comments. Product names : Cipro, Ciloxan. Ciprofloxacin, a quinolone antibacterial, is used to treat several types of bacteria resistant to other commonly used antibiotics. It is especially useful for some types of chest infections, and skin, intestinal , and urinary tract infections. Possible Adverse Effects Ciprofloxacin commonly causes nausea and vomiting; other side effects are less common, except when high doses are given.
when I didn't get them during one of the most stressful times I've had. Then I went on progesterone, and lo and behold, hives. They aren't quite as bad, and they go away within 10-20 minutes instead of staying for 1-3 days. I brought it up to my doctor and he seems to think that I may be sensitive to hormones or that my levels are out of balance (which also may be why I can't get prego.).
I was told to continue my dosage of Cipro adn to take Benadryl. After I was done with the Cipro, I still had hives. My hives would be very itchy, swollen adn would come on one part of my body, then after a couple of minutes dissapear and appear on another part. I was given Preginsone for 5 days and continued with the Benadryl. This did nothing. Then I was given Reactin which helped reduce the amount of hives and the itch. I was on Reactine for a bit over a week.
Treatment is by oral antihistamines like Benadryl or Claritin. You can also apply calamine lotion and topical steroids on the hives. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
my 11 year old son had a virus on Thanksgiving 5 days later he started itching from head to toe no rash no hives nothing. we started him on benadryl and calamine lotiong, not relief so the Doctor gave him allegra and cortisone, no relief. Then the dermatologist gave him a shot of kenalog, and prescription cortisone. still no relief after two emergency room visits they gave him hydroxine and blood workups for kidney, liver, and thyroid came back normal.
My wife contacted a rash November 2013 right around the time she had a bladder infection and taking Cipro. We assumed it was Cipro but rash remained. Dr assumed Scabies and again that's a negative. We did 3 skin biopsies and all negative for IGG, IGA, IGM, C3, C5B-9 and fibrogen. Next visit was to do a patch test on back and two items came positive: bacitracin and Nickel. Between November 2013 and the Patch test (April 2014) she had very severe rash on chest, arms, back and buttocks area.
I did a voiding rate test during that time (pee into cup device and measure flow) and it looked ok. The whole time my voiding seemed slower and with less volume in my own opinion. I ended up seeing a 3rd urologist due to a move. He was shocked that I hadn't had more tests. He first did a cyctoscopy (camera into bladder by way of catheter). He said he could see that the pelvic floor seemed tight, but I was free from lesions or other stuff.
Steve, the FDA has mandated a "boxed warning" since 2008 on Cipro because of pain/inflammation in tendons -- and sometimes in extreme reactions the Achilles tendon was completely sheared: http://www.webmd.com/osteoarthritis/news/20080708/fda-warning-cipro-may-rupture-tendons Since it is not known what the mechanism for the side effect is, then it's quite possible that muscle pain is also a side effect.
I went to dr today and was diagnosed with Bronchitis and I am currently on a steroid and cipro antibiotic they gave me a breathing treatment and took xrays and said its not pneumonia my concern is I have had unexplained migraimes for 13 years now even spent time in headache treatment and thay could not identify them. I have now for about the last year been suffering with anxiety issues and hives continiously as well as pains in the joints of my fingers.
I have constant grinding, popping, and cracking sounds in my joints all over my body, especially in my neck, very badly in my shoulders, my back, jaw, elbows, wrists, knees and hips. It does not usually hurt but my muscles and joints hurt and seem to be tense, weak and stiff. Can anxiety cause all of these CONSTANT symptoms? This problem is effecting my life and my relationships and I just want to feel normal and like my old self again.
At 15 we had braces put on her teeth and did not realize the rubber bands were latex, she always had a mild reaction to latex, but this reaction was terrible. She started to get hives everywhere and no one could figure out why. After lots of tests we realized the latex had caused her to have more food allergies. She has had a c pap machine since the age of 12. She is slightly over weight from prolonged prednisone use.
Urologist said my prostate was inflamed and prescribed another course of Cipro. This time, it made me incredibly fatigued. I consulted the doctor and he said to discontinue and watch and see because maybe the inflammation is not an infection. The symptoms did get better for a few days then came back. Urologist advised me to try a lesser dose of Cipro but this time the reaction was even worse: fatigued, nausea, itchy feeling all over (but no rash or hives), shortness of breath, anxiety.
I was put on macrobid after sex, didnt work, macrobid everyday, didnt work! and then I started taking cipro and that really worked. But now I am 8 wks pregnant and have had what I thought was a UTI for 2 goin on 3 wks now!! I am going crazy!! I have taken every antibiotic known to man that is safe for a pregnant lady and no relief. i know that i was diagnosed w/ cytolytic vaginosis awhile back so I read up on it, but w/ being prgenant I dont know if it is the right diagnosis.
I had an allergic reaction to this (hives wheezing itching and shakiness) so was told by the doctor to stop taking it. I'm now on ciprofloxacin 250 mg (five day course) and have just had the first dose. I'm really freaking though in case I have another allergic reaction. I have penicillin allergy anyway (again, hives etc) and now this with the Macrodanting. Is cipro ok for people with the two above allergies? many thanks.
Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves that send information to and from the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body. Damage interrupts this connection, and the symptoms depend on which nerves are affected. In general, the symptoms are in the arms and legs and include numbness, tingling, burning, or shooting pain. Peripheral neuropathy has been listed as a side effect of fluoroquinolones since 2004.
The most frequent side effects of ciprofloxacin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, headache, and restlessness. Hives and anaphylaxis are rarer complications to this.
This pain would intensify which would cause me to wince in pain and then release and then repeat all over again every 5-10 seconds for about a minute. This pain did not radiate anywhere but only within a specific point. Then this same stabbing sensation occurred half way up to the first knuckle of my right middle finger about 30 minutes later. Then immediately following this finger pain I felt pain in my right foot at the joint of my middle toe.
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody or tarry stools; burning, numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness of the arms, hands, legs, or feet; chest pain; dark urine or unusual change in amount of urine; fainting; fever, chills, or unusual cough; hallucinations; inability to move or bear weight on a joint or tendon area; irregular heartbeat; loss of consciousness; moderate to severe sunburn
My doctor told me that I must have had a delayed reaction to Bactrim and he put me on some penicillin based antibiotics for the skin infection. After being on it for a week I developed hives and had to stop the antibiotics and got on prednisone to control the hives. Since then my body is not the same. My biggest problem is my joints and tendons hurting all over my body. Things started to get better after going home to Europe for a month.
I too feel that doctors aren't doing enough and don't seem to fully understand how awful allergies can be. Until i got diagnosed with a specialist i felt like my doctor didn't really believe it was anything. Its so frustrating when you know your own body but you feel people don't understand. Ive felt ive had to push all the time for help and finally ive got diagnosed. Some use that is though when nothing helps me.
This new box warning via FDA is something i've been aware of for some time in patients using ciprofloxaxin, levaquin (levofloxacin), Moxifloxacin (Avelox), ofloxacin (floxin), gatifloxacin (tequin), and i'm glad it'll be highlighted on labeling, showing it's increasing incidence: risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture is further increased in those over age 60, in kidney, heart, and lung transplant recipients, and with use of concomitant steroid therapy.
I am being treated for a respiratory infection with Cipro 500mg BId and I am taking prednisone 11 mg for my RA. This morning I noticed a raised red rash on my old incisions. Knees and abdomen. Still feeling worn out.
I just got checked by an ENT and she thought I might have a sinus infection due to the dripping in my throat and gave me Cipro which my body couldn't handle and I broke out in hives, test came back negative. I feel like my right ear is filled with liquid yet when my ENT looked in there she said everything looked normal. I was just wondering if anyone else with Chiari has had any issues similar to mine and if so what did you or your doctor find.
should i have the doctor change to a diffrent antibiotic or i due suffer from panic disorder should i wait to see if it happends again. sensation is going away. what should i do and is this a possible side affect.
At Easter I had a UTI and went to a ready care to get treated. I was given Cipro. I took it for about 4 or 5 days and had bad hives. I am also allergic to a bunch of other antibiotics. About two weeks ago, i got the UTI back, got pyridium, ibuprophen and macrobid. Got hives from the macrobid and had to stop. Developed horrid migraine with lots of dizziness. I went to the family doc who ordered a urine test, blood work, and gave us zophran. (also had gotton that from ready care.
