Common Questions and Answers about Chest tightness unproductive cough

chest

I had shortness of breathe, coughing, unproductive cough, tightness of chest, wheezing and on top of that trying to prevent myself from going into a full panic attack because I felt I couldn't breathe. Finally from all the coughing I gave myself whiplash. What esle could go wrong. My husband purchased my a humidifier. The tightness in my chest was located under the breast area. That night I coughed up alot.
A cough that persists this long could be due to asthma but the persistence, in a person who had no cough before, suggests the diagnosis of pertussis, commonly called whooping cough. You should probably see a lung specialist to be examined, have a chest x-ray and pulmonary function tests, to get to the bottom of this. Your symptoms do not suggest anxiety, as the primary diagnosis, but you may be experiencing anxiety because this illness has not cleared-up.
I have been suffering from an unproductive cough, chest/larynx tightness, larynx-bronchi-lung hypersensitivity, mucous production and related panic. I have a history of acid reflux/GERD, including ulceration in the voice box, laryngospasms (VCD-type breathing 'attacks')and heartburn. Recently, I have been controlling the reflux quite well. Nowadays, I do not have obvious symptoms - I take PPIs (30 mg Lansaprazole per day), have lost weight and have a relatively good diet.
Surprisingly my shortness of breath and chest tightness is not bad and hasn't been that bad for the last couple of days. I think it's because I didn't drink coffee in the morning. Caffeine does cause anxiety. In any event, I am dreading next week. I have a feeling my doctor is really gonna push a chest x-ray. My previous posts explains my worry over a chest x-ray. Just hate going into the weekend feeling like this...
Crumbly or flakey foods Hot, spicy or even pepper in food Not drinking loads of water in the daytime. A Hot environment...ie: sitting on a hot bus Or and windy days Exercise Not taking my steroid spray the day before I have found my cough is helped by drinking tons of water. I permantely walk around with a drinking bottle (very annoying) It can also be eased somewhat by drinking water during an attack. Also my cough begins to get worse towards the end of the evening at dusk.
I do NOT have any noteworthy nasal symptoms, no runny nose or congestion, no chest congestion and no cough. This all leads me to believe its not sinus related. I feel like i am losing my mind. Its affecting my quality of life. Any advice would be helpful. And some reassurance that the mucous wont block my esophogus? Any ideas what this annoyance could be???
9/16-9/17 Ears began to plug up chronically. Fri: 9/18/09 Went to urgent care clinic to check on chest. No other symptoms were present outside of ear stuffiness. Was sent home w/ a Rx of Albuterol and told to take an expectorant for mucous. Was told to return the following week if the symptoms persisted. Mon-Thu: 9/21-9/24 Thick mucus production after eating develops. - So thick, had to spit out several times after eating. Stringy consistency.
My daughter has a new symptom of coughing. She says she feel like there's something in her throat but the cough is unproductive and seems to be worse at night. She has been diagnosed with a post nasal drip problem in the past which I have to give her cough medicine consisting of Promethazine w/codeine syrup. That is the only thing that helps her. My younger son has been diagnosed w/asthma so maybe there's some connection there.
It's hard to get it out because it's where you can't swallow down or cough it up. My symtons include excessive thin mucus in upper sinus, sometimes I can blow it our clear; in the middle way, I have crust accumulated in my nostril and sometimes I can pick and get it out (quiet a bit); and in my lower breath path or deep in my throat, I have thickened mucus and gel like tiny balls and hard to get them out. I have tried different things to reduce the mucus secreation.
Wow! I cannot believe so many others are suffering from similar symptoms. My story is about 4 years old, starting with the dry, irritating and unrelenting unproductive cough. I was "diagnosed" with asthma, then acid reflux and later chronic sinusitis. I was put on steroids, inhalers, antibiotics, endured a laryngoscopy, ate lots of Nexium...nothing really worked.
As I would fall asleep I would wake up with my heart beating out of my chest and the feeling I might pass out (Ironic I know, i was trying to sleep, but it was in a bad way). Now that I know what it is, think its time to cut down on the drinking. Thanks to the poster for the info. WOuld love to hear from a Doc on why and how this happens, but prolly wont on here just because of the lawsuits and what now (ugh).
Feel like cold water in their vains ? My tingling/numbness moves about - feet / legs, hands/arms, chest, head etc... Here it is 12/13 and still doing the same thing. I have read things on other sites that say it's more then likely a transit immune reaction.. does that sound about right ? I aslo have Fibermyalgia and wonderd if anyone else had a auto immune condition? I am going to see my GP tomorrow to make sure we can start ruling out the scary GBS.
