Common Questions and Answers about Chest tightness sternum

I then began feeling the usual chest tightness and restriction I feel most days. Located centrally around the sternum, lft/right side of sternum and upper chest, below base of throat.; I have been made aware of a tingling 'nerve' like pain somewhere around my left shoulder/arm pit, which radiates down my arm to my middle two fingers!? When I massage the area and my arm, I can not locate the nerve to releave it.
I have had anxiety/panic attacks for at least 12 years. I am in one of my anxious kicks (hypochondriac) lately and am experiencing a "new" symptom of intermittent chest tightness on the upper left side of my chest (almost near shoulder). It just comes and goes and it is just a tight sensation. I have read this could be anxiety and am wondering if anyone else experiences this. FYI I recently had a echo done that was all good and holter monitor showing Sinus Rhythm/Sinus Tach.
Jmike1 thankyou for your advice, I am in the middle of getting tests done to evauluate a GI cause as my stomach is also causing the pain - it is ths frequency that this chest tightness and pain occour that i can not let the heart question drop. I have only had the regular strees test - but if all my test come back negative I will pursue this nucular strees test. If you dont mind me asking what sent you to the doc's in the first place.
I don't feel any tightness in my chest, but tightness around my ribcage and sternum area. Is this common with asthma?
5 months ago I stopped lifting heavy weights and started to do more light weight circuit training. Shortly after I started getting tightness in my chest... finally i put my hands behind my head and put my elbows together and leaned back and my chest popped loudly. since then every morning and several times throughout the day I will feel tightness and much discomfort. The only solution is to pop my chest. I have now noticed swelling in my upper sternum which for me seems unsightly.
Things seems to have slightly improved for a small amount of time but I could never shake off this tightness of chest/tightness on full breathing. One concern was I had thick, yellow-dark yellow mucus for a few days straight at work(I work as a stocker overnight/around dust/etc.) and my temperature was fine. As well as this discomfort in my chest which is located about dead square middle of my breast cavity, sometimes in the ribcage/sternum with sensitivity touching below the sternum.
The problem I now have is.... I feel a tightness or heavy weight in my chest. Right in the middle of the Sternum. Like somebody is stepping on it and wont get off. Its worse when I'm up and walking. Is it because I'm no longer on the HCT? Is the Metoprolol Tartrate doing this? I never felt this at all on the Metoprolol Succinate. Is my body just adjusting to the new med and/or lack of the HCT??? Am I having a heart attack?
The pain returned right after i finished the prednisone. I have found that i can press on the tightness in my sternum and it will pop my sternum and pop my back giving me a little relief. I am constantly popping my sternum and thorasic spine all day long just to get relief. I have been cleared of all esopohageal and cardiac problems by my gi dr. and cardio. I did have an mri is the t spine that showed mild arthritic changes which my gp said was normal for a 35 y/o male.

Within the last 9 months, I've been experiencing a burning and tightness in my upper abdomen/chest area just below my sternum. It even makes my ribs, upper sides, and back have an achy feeling. It is usually accompanied by lots of burping and sometimes vomiting if it gets bad enough. It starts with a bloating feeling in my chest and upper abdomen, almost like someone is inflating a balloon in my chest. After about an hour, it reverses and feels like someone is squeezing my chest.
on feelings of one moment I felt good next I fine bad, but didn't notice any irregularities in heart beat, shortly after I started have the chest tightness (not long, very brief like a quick tight then release, a couple of times it went to my throat and little in the neck area.I also found that either before these feelings or after I feel the need to burp and sometimes I did burp and other times nothing came out just the urge to.
I have had pain and extreme tenderness in an area just below the sternum for about 2 years. It starts at the base of the sternum just where the stomach starts and seems to extend about two inches down towards the stomach. The pain seems to radiate into my left chest wall and causes a feeling of tightness. My doctor has told me to ignore it and it would go away. Easy for him to say right? Does anyone know what could cause this?
Literally, “fallen breastbone or sternum,” translated variously as “to have a sore chest; to be incapacitated (above waist); or, to suffer epigastric discomfort.” Many Haitians interpret the problem as being caused by a section of cartilage at the end of the sternum displaced as the result of a blow, fall, or strain. It is most often treated by a faith-and-herb healer who massages the back and abdomen, occasionally tugging on the thumbs, while the patient remains seated with the legs extended.
For the past few months, I have had a chronic chest tightness upon waking up in the morning. I sometimes have excessive burping. I sleep very well and no problems while laying down. It seems that I can 'push' a spot just to the left of my sternum that is more sensitive. I can 'crack' my sternum (loud, large cracking sound) by just pushing on it. A few months ago, I had esophagal spasms - which seems to have been relieved naturally (or travelled or something)....
About a week ago I felt a tightness in my chest right over my sternum. When I try to take a deep breath, it feels like it just stops. I can only draw a deep breath once in a while or if I suddenly gasp for air towards the end. There has also been a mild pain/burning feeling. When I lie down I can breath a lot better, but not regularly. I have tried the Primatine Mist inhaler as I used to get mild bronchitis when I was younger. It seemed to help the first time or two, then nothing.
From the moment I wake up I'm burping (mild burps mind you) and the Gas keeps getting stuck in my chest cavity and It's hard to get it out. Thus putting pressure inside my chest, most notable the sternum. I doesn't hurt too much, just extremely uncomfortable. If I eat something for ex. half a sandwich It really acts up, I get hard pressure in the chest. But even If I don't eat all day my body will still continue to reproduce gas thus making me continue to burp.
For 3 years I have suffered with a tightness that happens midchest (above sternum) and generates into my neck, especially where the two main arteries run on each side of the neck. I have been to 2 Cardiologists who find nothing that would cause this sensation other than "stress". These episodes started after fertility treatment injections.(2 months worth)Since then it comes and goes, completely went away during pregnancy only to return a few months post partum.
I'm in a somewhat similar position (20 year old that may have asthma). I get chest tightness but my main symptom is a cough. I also rarely get sick, have very little reaction to mosquito bites (don't have poison ivy near me so don't know) but I do have allergies to dust mites and cats which I didn't know until we looked into the cause of my symptoms. So just get it checked out and make sure that nothing serious is going.
however, I’m still suffering from chest tightness/wheezing along with chest pain. The chest tightness/wheezing is worst in the morning, which, sometimes makes it difficult to breathe; the chest pain is in the sternum area and is always there; I would say the pain is a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the worst. To make matters worse, a few days ago I coughed up some blood when I woke up in the morning; it has made me very concerned.
I was taken to the ER, where after a painkiller, the pain subsided but after leaving the hospital the next day, I developed a cough that persisted for about a month or so.. Ever since then, I have had this tightness and heaviness in my chest and I feel I can't satisfactorily take a deep breath without straining myself. My chest also pains and hurts (dull) almost the whole day..
I have also noticed that when the tightness in my chest is most noticable, I also have a spot in my chest (just below the sternum) which is tender to the touch. When the chest isn't tight, the tenderness is also absent. This has been a very frustrating experience and my physician hasn't been able to provide me with any answers. Are there any other problems which could cause this pain? I know have also had some breathing tests and chest x-rays, all normal.

It began (about 3 months ago) with an occasional cough not related to any illness, and difficulty breathing - having to take deep breaths because of the feeling I wasn't getting enough air. Rapidly developed a tightness in the chest and was diagnosed with asthma. burning sensation developed in upper sternum, with a heavy sensation in my chest, occasional pains or numbness in right arm, and burning and tingling sensations on the insides of the shoulder blade.
Having read your forum for several months now, I'm aware that there are many causes for chest pain. However, I believe my respiratory symptoms are fairly narrow and was hoping to get your opinion in advance of a appointment with a Pulmonoligist. On an infrequent basis, when taking deep breaths, I experience pain in the middle of my sternum. The frequency has been enough to make me somewhat concerned. No recent accidents, etc.. that could overtly lead to muscle pull, etc...
I eat ok, but get hardly any exercise between my job and having 3 young children. Recently, I've been getting some pressure in the center of my chest (just left of my sternum), but it is generally relieved when I press on it and/or burp. I also get tightness in my left shoulder and shoulder-blade, and some numbness, but I also have a herniated disk in my neck. If I press on the shoulder muscle in the right place, or sleep on it oddly, my arm falls asleep.
I have been on the meds for 6 months now, and about a month and 1/2 ago, I began developing extreme tightness in my throat like a choking feeling, pill stuck-feeling, tightness in the back of my neck and sternum. My general practicioner had me see GI doctor, who found minor constriction in my esophagus by conducting an upper endoscopy. I had a followup ultrasound of my thyroid indicating the same findings as the previous except additional growth (+1mm) in some of the cysts.
The next day I felt particularly bad, and had a very discomforting pain in the sternum area, and it felt as if my chest was weighted down. I finished out the weekend feeling quite miserable. Come Monday I went to my GP, they gave me a breathing treatment and we discussed being put on controlled medications. I felt relieved after the breathing treatment, and was quite happy to be on proper asthma allergy medications again. The pain returned that evening though.
I have gone undiagnosed with a number of symptoms since May. Started out as burning feeling around collarbone and then down through sternum area. Does not feel like heartburn, tender when touching. I also get a weird taste on tongue, pain behind my left shoulder blade, a dull burning type sensation in armpits, tendon (maybe joint) pain in wrists/ankles, abdominal tightness on both sides, and discomfort in shins. I have also noticed increase in floaters in left eye.
Mine does and its kinda freaking me out cuz i have no idea what it could be!!!! I dont even know how to describe the ache..soemtimes it feels like a tightness in my chest, sometimes like a weight or a dull ache.
