Common Questions and Answers about Chest pain pleurisy

pain

Avatar f tn The first thing that came to my mind when you described the pain you have is pleurisy. I had a bout of pleurisy about six or seven years ago that was SO uncomfortable, I was completely unable to draw in a breath for three or four days, and then it was WEEKS until it was completely gone. When it was at its worst, I seriously thought I was going to die because I wasn't able to expand my lungs enough to get in enough breath to fully expand my lungs!
Avatar f tn she heard something in my chest I guess. After she ruled out anything cardiac, she said pleurisy. My chest HURTS!!!! Not all the time...mostly when I am outside in the very cold air..or when I exert myself. She has prescribed me Ibuprofin for inflammation ... 800 mg 3 times a day...well, I think that is way too much for me...I havent done that. I wonder if I should be. Any advice? I keep thinking..is this doctor right? My chest doesnt hurt all the time..
Avatar f tn I have had chest pain for six days and it is getting worse. I had an ecg, blood tests and chest xray and nothing showed up. The doctor said it isn't my heart or lungs or any blood clots. The pain is on the right side of my chest and radiates to my bcak and right shoulder. I feel a little lightheaded and winded at times and have to walk slow because of that and the pain.

Avatar f tn Sounds almost like pneumonia or pleurisy, but DON'T take my word for it. My doc prescribed an anti-imflammatory drug a couple weeks ago, but he told me I could just use Alleve instead if I wanted. Whether you take something for the pain or not, you need to get medical attention.
Avatar m tn I have had a very painful constant pain between my shoulder blades for a day and a half. Years ago I had pleurisy on the linning of my lungs and then two years after that I had it again in my left scapula area. I'm wondering if this is pleurisy again. The pain doesn't ease with heat, IBuprofen or rest. Chest is heavy feeling and hurts. There are no other symptoms and I am generally healthy. Please advise. Thank you.
5093508 tn?1390543931 Pleurisy is a specific type of chest pain. The following, from the Mayo Clinic, is a good definition. “Definition By Mayo Clinic staff Pleurisy Pleurisy is a symptom occurs when the double membrane (pleura) that lines the inside of your chest cavity and surrounds each of your lungs becomes inflamed. Also called pleuritis, pleurisy typically causes sharp pain, characteristically when you are inhaling and exhaling, with or without cough.
Avatar n tn i have been to the a doctor for bronchitis had a chest x-ray it was ok no pleurisy now i am going for gallbludder ultsound for pain under my rids had all lab work done it was ok had a ct done on my chest last year feb 21 it was ok will a allsound show pleurlsy or the diaphragm i am 48
606025 tn?1342632079 t pneumonia and to rule out a blood clot. I had pleurisy-like pain which turned out to be pneumonia, not pleurisy. I do not believe you can tell without an xray. Also, my pneumonia was treated with antibiotics, but my daughter-in-laws pleurisy was treated with anti-inflamitories like Advil or Aleve. IF it is an inflamation of the lining, you need an anti-inflamitory. This works for the pain as well as the inflamation. I do, however, recommend that you insist on an xray.
Avatar f tn I recently posted some symptoms I have been having, most irritating of which are upper back pain with some chest pain. I remember my mother having pleurisy when I was in high school and she was very sick and in a great deal of pain. Unfortunately she doesn't remember much about it other than it hurt. I was wondering if anyone else has had pleurisy and what if felt like. My chest, back and neck feel like a giant muscle pull that just isn't getting any better.
Avatar f tn This sounds more like a muscular pain, or even pulmonary in nature. Doesn't sound like cardiac pain, as chest pain from the heart wouldn't be any different with deep breaths. I used to have a big problem with pleurisy. But with pleurisy I could feel the pain when I would bend over, and the pain is felt with breathing. You say you don't have it at night and for me when I had pleurisy certain sleep positions made the pain worse.
Avatar n tn 5 fever. My joint are in agony and I am experiencing blade like stabs of pain through my chest. Should I worry?
Avatar f tn The pain you describe is consistent with pleurisy but also could have a musculo-skeletal cause, such as muscle spasm. The one diagnosis that must not be missed is blood clots to the lungs (called pulmonary emboli) but your pain, as described is somewhat atypical for that. Nevertheless, you might want to discuss this possibility with your doctor for, if this raises his suspicion, further testing might be warranted.
Avatar n tn For a few years, I have had mild chest pain here and there in the left side of my chest. It does't get worse with exercise heart rate. I can bike and get to 160 bpm with no increase in pain. jogging tends to make it worse, especially when inhaling. Sometimes it happens at rest, sometimes when I bend over. No other symptoms, had an echo a year ago due to pvc episode from dehydration...no trouble there. I have an annual physical, and the blood work and EKG are always normal. Any opinions?
Avatar f tn I posted last week-48 yr old female with a burning pain in my chest 3 weeks after having the H1N1...I saw my regular Dr..she did EKG and chest xray. EKG was perfectly normal as was the chest xray-she said Pleurisy and told me to take Ibuprofin. That was on 12/21. Its now 12/27 and I am still having the burning pain--ive narrowed it down now I know when it happens--its when I am active--moreso when I first become active after a period of inactivity. Example...waking up in the mornng..
625929 tn?1221911647 It has since passed, but took some days before it did. The 5 times that I have had pleurisy it never comes and goes. The pain is consistent. And it is very painful. The worse case that I first had, was located under my right breast area. This is a very common area for pleurisy. I have experienced it at othe times, through my shoulder blades, upper chest area and lower right lung. Ibuprofen does ease the pain somewhat and helps with inflamation.
Avatar f tn I have lupus and my doctors don't know why I have chest pain. How do you treat skeletal chest pain?
Avatar f tn I would recommend seeing a doctor for any chest pains, even if they are mild, there are so many factors to consider with chest pain it is not something you can treat yourself.
Avatar f tn However, I am still experiencing the same chest pain I was the day this started (pleural pain). It has not gotten any better or worse....it just won't stop. It doesn't really hurt when I cough or breathe, it only hurts at the top of a deep breath or when I move in and out of certain positions. Laying in bed on affected side or getting in and out or bed or sometimes sitting up causes a deep stabbing pain in my bottom right lung where the pnuemonia and pleurisy was the worst.
Avatar f tn The most common causes of chest pain are heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease, anxiety, pulled muscle and chest wall pain. In pleurisy there is inflammation of the membranes that surround the lungs. When the two layers rub against each other there is severe stabbing pain which gets worse when you breathe.Infections, inflammations, trauma, heart attacks, pulmonary embolism all can lead to pleurisy. It is best to seek medical help. She may need blood investigations and X-ray chest.
Avatar f tn After a time it went away, then I caught another cold and it came back, again the Dr said my chest was clear but that it was Pleurisy, when it just got worse despite pills and spread to the other lung after a week she sent me for a chest X-ray, this too came back clear, the receptionist said 'Normal no action' so my question is this, if there is no pleurisy 'rattle' apparently my heart and lungs are clear, my blood pressure is fine, the X-ray is clear, im perfectly healthy, then
Avatar f tn He told me after listening to my lungs I have pleurisy. I was sent for a chest xray and have not heard anything as of today. Did the dr. tell you you had pleurisy? That is what the symptoms are. I read on the internet (big mistake!!!) that pleurisy is the underlying cause of something else. Usually a viral infection and possible a few other things. I was not put on antibiotics but was given pain killers and anti-inflammatory. Have not taken either.
Avatar n tn The pleura, the lining of the chest cavity and lungs can get inflamed causing pain and is referred to as pleurisy. This can happen with infections like tuberculosis or pneumonia. It can also occur with other conditions like trauma to the chest or pulmonary embolism. Therapy lies in treating the underlying cause. With your symptoms it is likely you may have developed respiratory infection and the consequent pleurisy. Please consult your primary care physician for further evaluation.
Avatar n tn Pain with breathing is not normally heart related. You may have a lung infection, bronchitis or pleurisy. All will have chest pain with breathing. If it hurts worse when you breath in deeply, it's most likely not cardiac in nature. You should see a doctor if you're concerned.
