Now have a possible sinus infection and doctor gave me Cefdinir. Two days into the medication, my neuropathy symptoms have increased. The burning, needle like sensations and numbness. I do not want to go through that nightmare again. So I stopped taking the antibiotic and am waiting to hear from my doctor for an alternative drug. Is this considered an allergic reaction or a severe symptom. Anyway to know which antibiotics I can use and not have this reaction.

I had an acute allergic reaction on Jan. 2, 2008 to Penicillin, my hands swelled and were burning . I was hospitalized and given intervenous steroids. Other antibiotics likely to cause seizures are ciprofloxacin, cefdinir, cephalexin, and penicillin (there are others too like metronidazole and TB drug INH etc). Usually taking vitamin B along with antibiotic prevents the likelihood of seizures. Please discuss with your doctor. Take care!

You probably should be talking to your sons doctor or pharmacist and ask if it is ok that he takes the prevacid when he has an allergy to penicillin. A lot can also depend on the type of reaction he gets from the penicillin as well. So my advice would be just to call up your pharmacist or doctor and ask. I took a 10 panel std test prior to the test I was taking Cefdinir although I stopped taking it 5 days before testing would the cefdinir affect the results which were negative.
Thank you doctor I think i will insist on the shots. Would an allergy test tell me if I'm allergic to the penicillin? I took two doses of penicillin V 2 years ago for an eye infection and had a reaction to it (urticaria, fever). I then thought it was an allergic reaction but thinking about it it could have been the jarisch-herxheimer reaction. Would a simple allergy test tell me if i'm actually allergic to it?

I actually had a conversation with a pharmacist about this exact thing just last week. He developed his allergy to penicillin when he was in his 50's. He'd taken it many, many times prior. Does your boyfriend's symptoms improve with antihistamines? Have him take two benadryl and see if there is even the slightest relief. Also, perhaps celiac disease. Does he have any digestive difficulties?
