Avatar f tn I am by no means an expert, but I have heard plenty of stories of people with concussions having lasting effects. Did your son's doctor mention Post Concussion Syndrome? Perhaps your son's ability to absorb impacts to the head is compromised. Recent studies have shown that children who get multiple CT scans show higher rates of brain tumors later in life. The radiation from a CT scan is significant and should only be done when necessary, especially in children.
Avatar f tn I am curious to learn more about post concussion syndrome. In the past 4-5 years I have had 4 or 5 "mild" concussions and am starting to get worried. I received all of these from sports and have since pulled myself from such dangerous situations but I fear I am still dealing with the after effects of my reckless youth. After my last concussion I had extremely bad vertigo, memory loss, and headaches.
Avatar f tn It is abundantly clear that in some cases concussions may result in seizures. That is not a "theory". It is a medical fact. It doesn't require "discussion". But not all concussions result in a seizure. There can be varying degrees of damage depending on the severity off the blow, where the impact takes place, and from resultant swelling, and if there is a delay in seeking medical attention. A "concussion" is not a "concussion".
Avatar m tn The stress that you have placed on the body at a young age is quite extreme however it does not mean you have made permanent damage necessarily. Will certain aspects of your youth in sports play a rule, absolutely. Increased body weight and heavy lifting impacts compressive forces on the muscles and joints. Weight loss may help to alleviate some of the stresses on the joints and moderate resistance training will help to strengthen the stabilizers of every joint.

Avatar n tn As you know, a "Grade 1" concussion is the mildest category. That being said,m there is no such thing as a "harmless concussion", and in the final analysis Lacross is a meaningless activity. Missing a season is not worth a lifetime of problems. I am somewhat concerned he did not have an MRI, and insofar as school authorities are mandated to pick-up-the-bill, this non-invasive test should have been provided.

Avatar m tn A doctor generally looks for focal neurological or generalized neurological symptoms that would show there is a pressure on brain somewhere. In absence of these symptoms and based on the history a diagnosis of concussion is given. If concussion is severe, and there is underlying brain injury, then yes, even death can occur. Hope this helps! Take care!
Avatar f tn Strenuous body building sure would have made things worse. When it comes to Head Injury medicine is still in dark ages even though lot of progress made in the past few decades.
Avatar m tn I'm in highschool and during soccer i got a concussion, the doctors said my brain was fine in a cat scan but ever since I have had chronic migraines and headaches for a year now. I saw a neurologist and am on amitriptyline and zolmitriptan. It has reduced my headaches from everyday to four times a week and my migraines from twice a week to once a month. i found that also pushing myself through physical exercise helps too. I still cannot attend school though and am homeschooled as a result.
Avatar n tn My head imideatly felt pain in the same spot of where I felt the pain during my concussion in rugby. Im not sure if I lost consciousness or not during one of the falls. And now I am starting the wrestling season I dont know if i should take this season off or not?
Avatar f tn Usually, such headaches and dizziness may result due to post-concussion syndrome and may last for weeks or months after the injury that caused from the injury of a fall, vehicle accident, or sports injury. In addition, patient may experience either migraine type or tension type headache. For treatment approach, first it is essential to get (MRI) done to detect the brain abnormalities after that injury.
163305 tn?1333668571 com/categories/hbot-concussion The concept is the use of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to treat concussion/sports injuries, which would be the same concept of using an oxygen chamber to treat fibromyalgia pain. There's a little boy who was injured in Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when a tree fell through the roof of their home, onto his head. His parents were experimenting with an oxygen chamber.

Avatar f tn Ouch! Did they get a goose egg from that? Broken skin? I think you 'could' take her to the doctor as concussions happen. I know that my kids in sports have each Fall a baseline concussion test. This then can be checked for the full year if there is any sort of injury to see if it is a concussion. Otherwise, you have to look for symptoms. This article you can copy and paste has a lot of info related to concussions.
Avatar m tn Hi. Sorry you are banging your head! Our head can take a lot of blows. Keep that in mind. We have a skull for protection. ER's are good for acute situations. I'm glad you got checked out. They did not see any acute signs of a brain injury. They are trained to do tests to determine this. I have kids in sports. Since you've had a concussion before, you know that a doctor does those to determine brain injury.
Avatar n tn My fifteen year old has suffered 3 concussions in 9 months. He has had 3 CT scans in that time. The last concussion was almost two weeks ago. He still has headaches and some fogginess. How worried should we be about long-term damage? When will the headaches go away?
Avatar m tn A concussion is a brain injury caused by sudden blow to the head or body including high-speed sports, where brain inside the skull shakes, preventing brain to function normally. Symptoms can range from passing out, confusion, coordination and balance problems; nausea etc. post concussion syndrome develops over time and is worse than before injury. Avatar m tn BTW, if you have access to see an "Osteopath" doctor, do so ASAP. They can do a number of gentle musculoskeletal techniques like cranial-sacral which restores healthy flow of CSF up/down spine & around brain. Also, it's billed as a dr. appointment & doesn't take away from limited therapy visits allowed.
Avatar m tn I am a 19 year old male who has suffered 8 concussions from football and various other sports. These are only the ones that have been diagnosed and are all from within a 5 year span. I have seen a neurologist as well as having 2 MRI's and a CT scan but all the results said everything was functioning fine and would just take time.
Avatar m tn AND before we knew about the seriousness of injuries to the brain. There is a reason why in sports today that people need to pass concussion protocol tests before they are allowed to return to activity. I suppose I'm trying to relate this to sports as you talked about boxing.
Avatar m tn If she has Chiari, I would suggest no contact sports like lacrosse` .Even gymnastics is too dangerous for those with these issues, one wrong move of the neck...I understand she loves to do those things, but I look to the Pro football players with concussion syndrome and think is it worth it? They didn't even have chiari....this is JMHO from what I have learned, and experiecned having chiari.

Avatar f tn As to whether he would, in fact, be allowed to play contact sports with a bioprosthetic valve in place, I am pretty certain that there would be a waiting period of at least about a year, to make sure that the sternum was fully healed. After that, I'm thinking it would probably depend on the policy of the institution for which your son wanted to play. If they say no, then he won't be playing, and I don't believe there is any universal rule about it.
