Common Questions and Answers about Causes of coughing out blood

coughing

Avatar n tn The medical term for your husband’s attacks is, Cough Syncope (fainting or passing out). The immediate cause of this fainting is the hard cough that causes reduced blood flow to the brain and can quickly deprive the brain of oxygen. However, there are many causes of sudden hard coughing, one of which is what is called Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or “heartburn”) that irritates the larynx (voice box).

Avatar f tn This is very common and is a result of your vagus nerve being stimulated by the coughing resulting in a sudden drop in blood pressure as it temporarily causes your heart to pump less efficiently causing less blood to go to your brain. The drop in BP causes your symptom of feeling faint, it is very common and completely normal.
Avatar m tn My son who is 12 is having episodes of coughing up blood every 60 days --it started in March of 2012 -- it sometimes starts with sharp pains in his right side (front) -- or sometimes he just coughs up blood -- the coughing up of blood lasts for about 20 mins -- he coughs up about 1/2 of a specimen container of blood -- he says it feels like there is something he needs to cough up -- he coughs -- not too hard - and then spits into a cup and it is blood.

Avatar f tn The major cause of coughing up blood is chronic bronchitis or bronchiectasis. Other possible causes of coughing up blood include COPD, lung cancer, tuberculosis, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia and lung abscess to name a few. Also, check to see if he is on blood thinners for heart disease, this could be causing the bleeding. I suggest he should go the ER, for immediate evaluation. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn Passing out after a cough is due to stimulation of the vagus nerve. There are degrees of genetic susceptability to this. The late Jackie Kennedy suffered from this problem. But most everybody has this "problem". It is really nothing to be concerned about. The cough, stimulating the vagus nerve, causes the heart-rate to drop, and this in turn drops the blood pressure. Commonly there is an instant of "blackout". Typically this ranges from a half-second to about five seconds.

Avatar m tn Hi, I went back to get another blood test done in a sexual health clinic. The doctor reckoned that I probably have a gut infection which I have to go back to my normal GP about. She said that this could be causing my white tongue as well as stress and prescribed an oral medication for this. I have to wait a few days for the results of the test but she said not to worry too much about HIV. If I am negative she will bring me back again for a test 3 months after the last possible exposure to HIV.
Avatar m tn There are many, many causes of chronic cough but the 3 most common are asthma, postnasal drip and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) the condition that causes indigestion and heartburn. Your doctor could help you determine if any of these 3 is the culprit. If none are, your best bet would be to make an appointment at the nearest cough clinic. These clinics are usually found at university medical centers. Also, you should in the meantime avoid peppers or ketchup. Good luck.

Avatar n tn Hello and hope you are doing well. The other causes for long term cough besides asthma are GERD and post nasal drip from allergies. GERD is gastro esophageal reflux disease where the stomach acids come back into the esophagus and spill into the wind pipe causing cough. Treatment with antacids will help neutralize the acids. Post nasal drips can occur with sinusitis and throat infections. Giving up cigarettes will abolish smoker's cough in 90% of people.

Avatar f tn m not sure if thats muscular or not. None of the phlem is infected, just really watery but causes alot of coughing. I was taking anti inflamitories for my back and that seemed to help the pain in the lungs. One of the doctors perscribed me codeine for the cough because he thought that this would help dry things out. Unfortunatly it didnt.
Avatar m tn For some insight, the complications of coughing can be classified as either acute or chronic. Acute complications include cough syncope (fainting spells due to decreased blood flow to the brain when coughs are prolonged and forceful) can be an explanation of passing out. Nevertheless, your boyfriend should get a workup on the respiratory and the cariovascular system to rule out a serious medical condition.
1380814 tn?1285965586 About a month ago my dog was throwing up stomach bile like once or twice a week, then it stopped for a while. I tried to get my mom to take her to the vet but she didn't think it was anything to worry about. Lately she's been puking up nothing, like she dry-heaves and makes a coughing noise as she does it. But she's still her normal-self, hyper and energetic. She vomited today and there was blood in it, even though it was barely noticeable. Is this serious?
Avatar n tn Hi there, It is possible that you have burst a small vessel in your throat by coughing and this has caused blood in sputum. The common causes of blood in cough are bronchitis, irritation of the throat from violent coughing, blood clot in lungs, tuberculosis of lungs, vasculitis etc.Though you do not have any symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath you should see your doctor and get evaluated. A clinical examination and tests like sputum culture and smear, blood counts may be necessary.
