Last night we opened our backdoor to find a stray kitty (adolescent male). I noticed he was malnourished and gave him some milk and chicken (all I had for an animal). Then I noticed he was favoring one leg. I think it might be broken! I've called a few places and no one wants to deal with him, of course. They're just going to want to euthanize him instead of help him.
So my question is this--- what do I do?!?!?!?!
I, too, found a stray with a problem. My cat's leg was broken and the vet recommended amputation. They could either surgically create a hip for the cat or amputate it's leg so that the cat could jump and run around!
I hope you have already taken her to the vet, since this could be serious. Loss of leg functioning could be caused by a stroke or blood clots...that happened to one of my cats when she was only 2 years old. The emergency vet thought she had broken a leg, but couldn't find any fractures (this was in the middle of the night over the weekend), the next morning, when she lost functioning of two more legs, she had to be put to sleep. It still makes me cry just thinking about it...
I came home from work to day to discover that my niece had been playing with her new cat, twiggy, a ~6 month old male, not yet neutered; current on shots. She was holding it up over her head and the cat objected and began squirming. As she was putting him down he twisted out of her hands and landed badly. He was limping and meowing in pain. When I first saw him he was very calm, but hiding in the hallway. He allowed me to feel all four of his legs, squeeze along the knee joints and paws.
It seems that the problem is in her hip. When she is fast asleep I moved her leg around in a circular motion and there was no reaction, she even stretched it out. But when awake simply touching her leg or hip results in a negative reaction(fangs claws cries). While I live in Costa Rica I am hesitant to take her to the vet, she seems to have improved running around and playing, she can even climb up onto the bed and other furniture; but still does not use the leg. Any suggestions?
I tried to get a feel of the paw and she pulled it away as she always does. I couldn't feel anything abnormal compared to her other paws bone wise but I recently noticed that this particular paw has no claws, can anyone suggest a reason or remedy, I'm a student so can't get her to the vet for another 3 days.
This morning our neighbor came over to tell us Jasper, our 5 year old cat, was under the hood of his work truck when he crunk it up. We took him to the vet immediately. He has a broken leg (possibly two broken legs) and may be paralyzed, a broken tail that has to be amputated, a gash on his backside, a gash in his face and possibly a broken pelvis along with possible internal injuries.
A month ago this happened? And, the cat has been suffering that long? Please, take him to a vet.....find a low-cost one if money is a problem, or ask for a discount or something, Even call the SPCA to ask if one of their vets would see your cat for free or discount.because you are financially unable to pay for a vet.
A few of you asked to be updated on the kitty cat I found (or I should, "Who found us!"). We just got back from the vet. He got vaccinated, medication for an infection in his ears, de-wormer stuff, and x-rays. The x-rays showed a BB pellet lodged in the cat's chest, but that isn't something we have to worry about. But I was absolutely livid inside when the vet told me.
I'd seek a second opinion on the records from a vet who advertises as cat friendly. Our vet does and I very much trust her judgement.
It may get you you the same advice, some internal injury that was just beyond the first vet's ability to help.

Neutered cats become more peaceful. If you don't do this, Beckett will start weeing every where to mark. You won’t like this I'm sure. Fortunately for him and you, he is male, meaning neutering is easier than spaying. Usually the cat is fine the next day, jumping and running up and down. This procedure is, thank God, far from being risky or having negative effects. Your cat will look younger, lazier, just a bit… and much more loving.
I wanted him seen ASAP because of the broken rear leg. The x-rays showed that the injury was about a month old and that it was already healed. It wasn't just a little break but the femur was actually snapped off. In order to fix it, they'd have to do a surgery that costs over $1500. Or... amputation (around $450- including pain meds).
My question is--- do we HAVE to do anything? When we found him he wouldn't walk on the leg and I thought it was a new injury.
My usually active 13 wk old kitten was fine this morning, but tonight is wanting to sleep without eating and is limping on the right front leg. I presume he and our older cat who normally romp throughout the day and night either got rough or the kitten attempted to jump down from too high.
He is refusing to eat tonight so I've been giving him liquidized canned food via an eye dropper every hour...two to three eye droppers. To much complaining I might add.
He has no fever...
Well at least you know why the shoulder has a swollen area. What you can do is take him to the vet immediately. I don't think there is anything you can do really and the cat is in pain. The vet may want to do x-rays to see if there is a fractured bone, which I'm sure there is. I guess If the leg is swollen bathe in hot water and mild disinfectant and go to the vet.

puck did that once. his foot fell asleep. it was actually very disturbing for me. we fell asleep together and i must have had my arm on his one leg and had it pinned for a while. in his case it stopped within about 15 mins. if yours didn't stop it's ore likely to be broken. poor kitty. really do take it to the vet asap as the pain is intolerable with a break.
I have examined his legs as best I can, he has some fur missing on the right hind leg, about an inch to two inches long and half an inch wide, a few scrapes on the skin but no other marks. I test his paw reflex and they all seem normal, he has strength in the back legs, not like it was, but he can use them. He gets around very very slowly, I have soaked him in epsoms salt bath, for 5 minutes once a day for two days in a row, and that seemed to help him.
