874521 tn?1424116797 My cat has allergies that cause skin breakouts, I've done the steroid route and this works for awhile, now using a change in food and omega 3's and so far he has only had one small breakout that lasted only 2 days and didn't go on to become open and raw sores. My question is, I've read that sometimes benadryl at .25mg per pound can be successful in cats. Is this also avail in topical form rather than using systemically?
Avatar m tn My cat has a licking problem. She licks her upper lip and it is now projecting outward and looks like its ulcered or almost callused. Either way it is bigger then the rt. side.
Avatar n tn The fat lip also is commonly secondarily infected with bacteria, so I would recommend a 2-3 week course of antibiotics if not already done. The three types of allergies are parasite (fleas, mites), food allergy, and pollen/dust allergies. If your cat is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely.
874521 tn?1424116797 I want to give my cat COLD WATER FISH OIL for his coat and skin allergies symptoms(eosinophilic plaque). the bottle I got reads 1 teas. per 18kg.of weight. I'm sorry but I'm too dumb to know all these conversions. my cat weighs 13 lbs so what is that in Kg? and I have a ML dropper to use....so again I need to know how many ML per pound of weight...
1716071 tn?1308803156 Hi Guys , I am just chiming in to let you know my cat has food allergies. I was told to put her on Natural Balance Duck or Venison soft food as well as their hard food for treats. You cannot allow your cat to have anything other than these 2 things--no treats, table scrapes, tuna juice etc. This will take at least a month to 3 months before you know if it is an allergy. You need to give it time. My cat has now developed IBD and Pancreatitis so she is on the Prescription Hills Diet Z/D. Yuck!
3107761 tn?1341539856 hi and welcome...can all be associated with allergies or intolerance within the diet., from the swollen mouth/itching to the diarrhea &/or Inflammatory bowel Disease (IBD)....but this may take some time to all sort out, first of all I will send you some links to do some reading and we'll take it from there ok.. there have been some problems with purina foods, you can check these posts out to see if there maybe a correlation there. how long has she been off this food? http://www.medhelp.
5655568 tn?1371757104 Recently, I noticed that my 10 month of cat has licked/chewed off fur in one particular spot. The spot doesn't seem to be bothering him much, he's just as playful and sweet as always. Whenever I touch it, he doesn't jerk away like it hurts or anything. I only noticed the spot just yesterday, and it wasn't very big. Today, however, I noticed that it was a bit bigger. I don't know if it's dry skin, or he maybe got bitten by something?
Avatar m tn My sweet 4.5 year old cat, has had IBD for most of his life. Our former vet suggested 1.25mg of prednisone every other day combined with a special diet - Hill's prescription z/d. We followed this regime for most of his life until about 6 months ago when Hudson started vomiting and having loose stools. A new vet suggested a new diet: Hill's d/d in venison and a stronger course of prednisone: 5mg twice daily for a week, 5mg once daily for a week, then 2.5mg once daily for a week, 2.
905793 tn?1254273122 Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with the way my cat started acting. My cat is a 2 year old male, and just three days ago he began twitching alot. No particular area, sometimes its his ears or head, then it might be his back, or tail, etc. He tends to do this the majority of the day when awake.
905425 tn?1242337287 These diets consist of a novel protein, such as lamb or venison, which are not typically used in cat foods, or a prescription hypoallergenic diet available from your veterinarian.
Avatar f tn Hi Gia and welcome to the forum! Since your cat is loving his food, just stick with the better quality most definitely. As to how easy different meats are to digest - I don't know, maybe someone else will. I'm thinking your kitty might be like mine - he just eats too fast and vomits. And once or twice a month isn't too much to start changing your boys food which is much harder than it sounds.
681148 tn?1437661591 It could be something in the environment, too, because my own allergies have been driving me crazy big time lately, too--for about as long as Akira has been scratching more than usual. It could be all of the above, too. So, I was told to try the process of elimination by using just the turkey Wellness grain free. It's a lot like an elimination diet that people go through for food sensitivities.
Avatar f tn I would get any cat checked out if it wasn't raised in your home. Have your cat checked by your vet to see if they carry it. Especially if they go outdoors.
Avatar f tn I have a 7-year-old cat that I adopted when she was about 2. She is spayed and up-to-date on vaccinations, lives mostly indoors but usually goes out for a few hours every day, and is treated monthly with Advantage. About 2 years ago, she started developing a skin issue. She gets scabs around her eyes, under her chin, and sometimes on her back and sides. Sometimes the skin around her anus becomes red and scabby and loses hair.
Avatar n tn I immediately took him to the vet because he was around another cat in January who had a bad case of ringworm. They took cultures which have been negative to date. Since then, I changed his food (put him on a hypoallergenic diet - turkey/potatoes mix; his previous organic food was grain free but who knows) and changed his litter to an all natural pine based litter. However, he has gotten worse.
Avatar m tn The vet said since the prednisone worked on her its most likely environmental allergies from relocating to a moist humid environment with lots of pollen from a very dry desert environment. After taking her off the steroids she has continued to lick the fur off her backside, hind legs, and now starting on her front paws. I have switched her food to a limited ingredients food with salmon and green peas for her coat and skin, but it doesn't seem to be working.
389974 tn?1331015242 I figured out the grain allergy after the vet confirmed that the cat had food allergies without too much trouble, because I had given her Fancy Feast with gravy, which she loves. Well, gravy usually has wheat flour in it to thicken it, and if I'm sensitive to gluten foods myself, then I reasoned that cats could be, too. And, since cats are true carnivores by nature, then it seemed reasonable to me that grains weren't supposed to be part of the cat's regular diet.
Avatar n tn I have taken out cat to several vets and they cannot diagnosis the scabs on her. Her coat is beautiful, she eats well and shows no other signs of discomfort. We just cannot get rid of these scabs. She allows me to groom her and take them off. Would an antibiotic cream help? She wlll not take medication.
Avatar f tn I stopped giving her chicken and changed her food to Instinct Venison and Rabbit. I also give her the greenie treats. She seemed to be doing good on the Instinct or so I thought but the itching and little bumps started appearing, so i changed to Natural Balance with the soft food with fish and I noticed that she started getting flaking and red with little scabs and bumps. I went back to the pet store retuned the food and now have her on Canadae dry food only.
Avatar f tn I changed their food to a hypo-allergenic venison food and I only clean my floors and counters with hot water vinegar and lemon, so I have no idea where this rash is coming from. They don't seem to be overly affected by it, still very energetic, but they do seem to be cleaning more, any ideas what this could be?
1761287 tn?1313824787 I have an 11 year old Maltese. Our previous vet was giving him Prednisone. Our new vet states that the Predisone is the reason the dog is sick because he now has Cushing's disease. Our dog urinates large amount and often. He's on a special diet because the Vet said he's allergic to many foods, so now he eats DD diet- it's either venison & potatoes or salmon & potatoes and duck & potatoes because he has allergies. We give him Trilostne 2x daily. I see no change?
Avatar f tn Ive switched my dog back to duck/potato food because while switching to venison/potato, her skin itching, hair loss, flaking, along w/ear infections/redness, increased. My question is, in the meantime, with all the itching & flaking of skin, especially the lower back area, just above the tail, should i take her in to have a prednisone/cortisone shot to alleviate these sympoms? OR will the food change alone, if it works, alleviate the flaking skin? Thanks!
Avatar f tn She would also feel the urge to go but only would do a little bit. We then changed her to Venison and the same thing happen. I have been giving her boiled chicken and rice. She has been fine. Now she has only gotten an upset stomach (mucus and urge to go) maybe once. I would like to know what would be the best food to give her and if any vitamins should be given in addition (can you also recommend one).
Avatar m tn My cat had fleas and he was constantly licking, fur was coming off and he lost weight. Vet gave him a shot and a pill, he started to gain weight again and returned to his old self and bothering the dog and playing. He stopped for a while but actually did have to have the shot and pill twice. Where he licked the fur off in the beginning all grew back. He is still his playful self but he is licking again and his hind legs are losing fur and one side of his backend by his tail.
Avatar f tn My vet says my golden retriever has allergies - food and grass. Have tried various pet food for sensitive skin, some very expensive, and also using Malaseb shampoo weekly. Don't see fleas - ever. She's inside alot but takes lots of walk and plays in the back yard. She chews her paws, scratches everywhere. Have used Benadryl but I hate to think she will have to live on that. Nothing really seems to help. What to do? Have heard fish oil, Vit 3, Omega 3's, help.
Avatar n tn My cat has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a month now. She has no other symptoms. She plays, she eats well. Just sneezes and has nasal drainage. Her eyes are good. No swollen or runny eyes. Is this allergies? I noticed she usually only sneezes when her nose touches objects or she sniffs. Sometimes mucous comes out with the sneeze.
Avatar f tn Someone asked for suggestions on what to feed itchy dogs/dogs with allergies, though I couldn't find the original question. Anyways, I had suggested grain-free dog foods with limited ingredients, (as most allergic reactions come from food). I just came across another one, by **** Van Patten, "Natural Balance" "Limited Ingredients Diets" which is grain-free and (comes in a purple bag, Sweet Potato & Venison formula).
