How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!

My cat was just dx'd with herpes in her eyes. For years, we too, thought it was allergies, but no. According to my vet, herpes is very common in cats. The way I figured out what was possibly going on with my cat was to google "feline herpes conjunctivitis." Some sites will give you pictures to look at and compare as well as descriptions.
Discharge from the eyes have many possible dx's, but a simple blood test will confirm whether your kitty has herpes or not.
My cat has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a month now. She has no other symptoms. She plays,she eats well. Just sneezes and has nasal drainage. Her eyes are good. No swollen or runny eyes. Is this allergies? I noticed she usually only sneezes when her nose touches objects or she sniffs. Sometimes mucous comes out with the sneeze.
Allergies aren't hereditary but they can come and go. Some people outgrow allergies and others get them when they are older. My little brother had a lot of allergies when he was a kid (including pet dander) and outgrew them, while I didn't have them as a child but became more prone to them as an adult.
I've developed severe allergies since moving in with my girlfriend who has a cat and a dog. So severe that I am constantly sick whenever home, find myself waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air (asthma - I have an inhaler), and hacking up a lung in the mornings. We've tried vacuuming more and bathing the animals but it being a small town home, living in close quarters, it does not seem to help. Now we are looking at me moving out and starting allergy shots.
I was told with my first they don't develop allergies until the age of 1 or 2 yrs. I can't remember which. It's been 5 yrs ago lol. Having a cat will actually help build up their immune system.
The fat lip also is commonly secondarily infected with bacteria, so I would recommend a 2-3 week course of antibiotics if not already done. The three types of allergies are parasite (fleas, mites), food allergy, and pollen/dust allergies. If your cat is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely.

I know this question may sound ridiculous but are people with hiv more prone to allergies? I've been having allergies for the past month or so to my cat or something in my house that i have never had a problem with before. Could this be a sign that i have hiv? I've only had one high risk behavior in my life and that was about 9 months ago when a condom broke on me. THe girl said she is 100 percent sure she has nothing but that is not really enough assurance for me.

The obvious solution is to take immunotherapy (allergy shots). However, when I contacted my allergist's secretary she said that they do no have one. I would like to rebut her claim, but in order to do so I need proof that this exists.
hi so sorry for poor kitties problems, its not likely allergies, unlike us humans an allergy for a cat shows up as a problem with their skin.(as far as I am aware)..
but the eye discharge sounds like something that does need to be investigated by a Vet...what exactly was he diagnosed with the first time he was seen?...In my opinion its more of a further health condition and not likely an infection because it is chronic.
it could be allergies or maybe mono? if you have not had this before it can present as sore throat that is ongoing but is also generally along with fever, and tiredness and you had fever, a mono spot test if you have it would show up positive 2 weeks after symptoms first apparantly.
Only a skin test will rule out for sure whether it was cat allergy or not. Many people who own cats develop allergies after some time.
The other possibility is pollen and mold. Please consult a skin specialist and get a skin test for allergy or a RAST panel.

t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.
My dog had her blood work tested for allergies and is currently having shots now for almost a year. Her stomach is breaking out so bad now and her skin on her stomach has got so thin from all the Cortizone sprays, injections etc..
Our vet has takin her off all Cortizone do to skin thinning out. Do you know of any other product we can use instead of Cortizone.
"Jersey" our dog is always licking and not resting much because of this.
Some allergen exposure control methods are to clean very well daily (vacuum, sweep, dust), keep the cat out of your bedroom, wash your hands after playing with the cat, and shower before bed. If you can train the cat to tolerate a bath that would be beneficial as well. Otherwise you could try wiping its coat with a damp cloth regulary.
There are ways to live with pet allergies and keep the pet.
