Avatar n tn t an upper respiratory infection which she will need medication to clear it up. Our second cat had an upper respiratory infection and she needed veterinary medicine to clear it up. We are all pet parents here on this forum and we all attempt to help each other with our kitties often with much success. I wish you and your kitty well.
Avatar f tn I have a cat that is almost 18 years old. He has always been a scar that hides from everyone. He has been hanging out with us and around the dogs and is really stuffy. He has a lot of snot in his nose, it is hard for him to breathe, he gags and coughs and has runny eyes. My husband just thinks he is old with allergies but I'm concerned. I dissolve his food in water and crush it up and he drinks and eats fine. Not sure what to do? Can I give him something for the allergies?
Avatar n tn Sudden onset or temporary clear discharge from the eyes can be caused by injury (although this is unlikely if the discharge is from both eyes), allergic reaction or an upper respiratory tract infection - just like when humans get watery eyes when suffering from a cold. If your cat has a respiratory infection he is likely to also develop a wet nose.
1232362 tn?1333135406 I have had bad cat allergies to cat hair- it's probably not a good idea to have cats if you have asthma or other lung diseases
Avatar f tn Allergies have a genetic basis but not always to the same allergen. Two parents with allergies (50% chance of developing allergies), one parent 30%. It is possible that it is an allergy, however make sure the cat wasn't bathed with anything, I reacted with hives once to the shampoo I used on a puppy at work.
Avatar n tn I'm so confused! My cat has allergies, and the vet has given her steroids, but that only helps for a little bit and I don't want to keep giving her that. I got out a healthy alternative book for cats and it says to give her garlic, and for her to breathe eucalyptus oil. I looked online at other sources which say garlic and eucalyptus oil are toxic to cats. I don't know what to do! I don't want to kill my cat, but she needs some relief! How do I know whats the truth? Help please!!
Avatar m tn For about a year now I have been dealing with some respiratory problems that I haven't been able to resolve. Basically, I have constant nasal congestion with post-nasal drip, which causes a lot of sneezing, coughing/ wheezing (as a result of so much phlegm), sinus headaches, and occasional sore throat. I have been to an allergist and tested low to very low an all allergins. I have seen an ENT and had a CAT scan.
Avatar n tn I have a 13 year old mixed breed cat who has recently developed severe respiratory problems. Her breathing is very labored and she produces noticeable wheezing and effort on exhaling, with her abdomen visibly moving in and out. This started about 2 weeks ago and has gradually gotten worse. A few weeks before this she also started scratching her ears frequently and it sounded as if she had a soar throat when she meowed (now no sound comes out).
2075937 tn?1334884194 Its actually good for kids to be around animals, housemites and dirt there is research to suggest that it helps prevent allergies, and that the increase in allergies these days is because our houses are too clean so kids are not building a resistance...
11389935 tn?1417796609 Hi KCLover, Your Boyfriends cold was HIS. Your cat probably has allergies or an Upper Respiratory Infection (cat cold). Now if you cat has the herpes virus and this URI is one of the symptoms, your older cat can catch it from her. Although if they have been together for sometime they are both immune or both infected already. Theses URI will happen several times a year.
Avatar m tn I have a cat but I have had her for months and nothing like this has happened. I am also in a new state with bad seasonal allergies, and it just went from 55 to 85 at the same time that this started. I don't know if this is a heat rash, or if seasonal allergies can do things to the skin as well as sinuses? Does this sound familiar at all? Thank you in advance!
7532341 tn?1391693986 He may have the beginnings of an upper respiratory infection (cat cold). If there is no nasal discharge it is early in the process, it is viral, so not really anything you can give him. .....but if discharge is seen, watery eyes, and breathing difficulties begin, then he needs an antibiotic. Let's hope it is just allergies. I am sure others on this site will check in with suggestions also.
611067 tn?1458591483 My cat does the same thing. I've had her looked at and they kept saying it was probably allergies. She also gets a weepy eye from time to time and I have to get an ointment to put in her eye. This last time we decided to try antibiotics in case it was some sort of viral bacteria or something. I've heard herpes in cats can cause these type symptoms too. You might want to get that checked out. Otherwise, it's probably just allergies.
Avatar m tn Ask your vet if it's possible that your cat has an allergy instead of a respiratory infection. Sometimes vets assume with sneezing and congestions, and just prescribe the antibiotics. I don't know what kind of tests your vet did, but we have a cat that had exactly the same symptoms you are describing and it turned out to be an allergy. So, it's worth asking about. As to OTC, there is nothing that will clear up a respiratory infection, if that's what it is.
Avatar n tn Once in a while one will find its way in the living area and within minutes my cat kills it. A couple months ago my cat started to get bad respirtory problems and died. My doctor told me what happened to my cat and my issues is not caused from the bats. Today I went for an eye exam and the eye doctor told me I have scars on my right eye caused from fungus from bird or bat droppings. Of course Im freaking out and thinking about walking away and giving it to the bank.
Avatar n tn I'm a 20 y/o female 140lb.. no history of obesity, smoking, vaping, drugs, drinking, asthma or allergies and I haven't had any recent respiratory illnesses. I do have a history of anxiety and panic attacks. In the past 3 or so weeks I've had problems breathing on and off. A few weeks ago, out of no where, I started feeling like I was suffocating or like I couldn't breathe. It felt like my nose and throat were closing and it was hard to get air in.
Avatar m tn It probably is the chronic allergies that are causing a chronic inflammation and slight infection in your lungs. You never had a super long exposure to the cats before since you didn't live with them so the allergy response has changed. Many people can handle a short exposure to allergens but it is the chronic longterm exposure that causes problems.
669875 tn?1226532023 can be due to allergic nasal polyps or tumors, allergic reactions, deviated nasal septum, trauma to the face, respiratory tract infections, allergies such as hay fever, immune system cells or cystic fibrosis. It is important to find out the cause of chronic sinusitis as then specific treatment can be started. Treatment varies from saline and steroid nasal sprays to decongestants and antibiotics. Some resistant cases may need surgery.Treatment for allergies and cystic fibrosis is specific.
5347058 tn?1381188426 sensitive commonly to a preservative or ingredient in dry kibble type food. grain allergies are common in cats and most cat foods are full of unnecessary grains just b/c they are 'cheap' fillers for the manufacturer, they do absolutely nothing for the diet!!! there are some 'grain free' diets on the market that may be a worth a trial. EVO, Wellness and Natures Variety are a few. cats can also suffer from environmental allergies....such as what you decide with your kitty.....
Avatar n tn I have been to 3 different doctors and each time they have treated me with allergy meds., cortizone shots, and diffent antibiotics to no avail.. I had a CAT scan of my sinus 2 weeks ago and the sinus is clear. They now have me scheduled for allergy testing coming in a week. I am into my 9th day of a 10 day antibiotic for the 4 time. Each time I feel a little better for about a week, and then the symptons return. This round of antibiotic I haven't had any relief.
Avatar f tn I live with 2 cats and the Respiratory consultant says its cat allergies and not lung cancer which is what I fear this is!
967947 tn?1258873459 I've had bad allergies my whole life. I'm allergic to pollen, mold, dust, animal dander. Three years ago I all the sudden became fatigued. Some of the symptoms were light headed, fast heart rate constantly and increase by physical exertion, ortho-static hypo-tension. I do have a cat. I am always very fatigued all the time. While I'm just standing and talking to somebody my heart rate is about 150. I cannot do that much physically as I use to.
Avatar f tn I just learned that online you can BUY samples of cat fur from certain cat breeders. For about $13.00 with shipping!! These are for the hypoallergenic type of cat called ---> Siberian Cat ... apparently it has to do with its DNA of some sort in the dander not producing a certain element that the other breeds create which most cat allergic people are triggered by. Some even offer money back in two weeks if you are allergic once the pet is placed. You can buy some type of insurance.
Avatar n tn My cat has had a sinus problem since earlier in the fall -- lots of sneezing, runny nose, etc. I took him to the vet who prescribed antibiotics. They were effective but about two weeks after completing the antibiotics, the sneezing started again. Since then we have gone throught two additional rounds of antibiotics, the latest was horrid pink stuff (Novolexin) that I could barely get down his throat!
Avatar f tn my son has allergies which he treats OTC. He has had a chronic non productive cough for about 3 weeks using sudafed, mucinex with no help. Could he have asthma? Stubborn and won't go to a doctor. Any advice would be helpful.

Boots has never really gained much weight and is really small compaired to the rest of the cats she has and he still has a cough ! Last week when I was at my Mom's house I noticed that Boot's hair on his back was thinning and was really easy to come out much worse than a sheading animal ! Could Boot's have Feline Leukemia ??
1232362 tn?1333135406 I was hoping you would come along and answer - thanks FM. Don't you also give Akira a little Zyrtec?
Avatar f tn My cat had this respiratory infection, too, right after I adopted her from the pound. It's common there. She had it bad. I had to go back and get antibiotics a few times. It finally just had to work out of her system. I think they will only do about 2 or 3 rounds of antibiotics because any more than that it won't work anymore. It's like humans who can build up a tolerance. I was worried about her because she was sick for a couple of months but she finally pulled through.
