Avatar f tn 1) Avoid animals ( but it sounds like this is a no go with you lol ) 2) Wear protective clothing when near them...face mask ( paper kind should be fine ) and keep your skin covered. Wear long sleeves, full length pants, etc. 3) Wash after handling them. Take a shower when you get home. 4) See my friends over in the Alternative Therapies/Complementary Medicine Forums. They will be able to give you many good ideas as well.
Avatar f tn We live near the edge of town...in the city but near country fields. The lady who the yellow cat (the one with the skin issue) belonged to had just left him out in the cold and rain and said she doesn't like cats really and the cat belonged to her boyfriends daughter and they wanted to find him ahome before they moved next door but didn't. I think I will try to find him a home. Will list on craigslist.
Avatar n tn Otodectes, Cheyletiella, Scabies, etc, ringworm and other fungal infections, allergies (allergies to food can occur anytime in the life of a cat), bacterial skin infections, endocrine disorders and more. Ringworm, and some mites can be transmitted to people. Frontline does not treat mites. The topical: "Revolution" is for fleas, ticks, ear mites, and scabies, so it might be a good idea to switch to Revolution for a couple of months.
7639611 tn?1392877261 ve been experiencing itchy red patches of skin that look like a rash on my arms, hands, and legs. The skin on my forehead is red, irritated, dry and flaky, though not quite as itchy. The skin all around my eyes is also red, irritated, dry and flaky. Oh, and my nipples are cracking. I use a humidifier, and I've tried applying Allegra cream, Vaseline, and Neosporin. I've also been taking Allegra orally. I wash my sheets, vacuum, and keep my living environment clean.
Avatar f tn Sniffles, I think you got that name regarding the allergies eh? First off, if your friend don't mind, make sure the cats can be brushed. You might or might not know this, but it's not the hair that we are allergic to, it's the cat's saliva. They clean themselves with the saliva and then it gets on the hair. So it's not just the cat/s, it's anything the cat licks or gets the hair after it cleans itself on. Brushing the cat before and after visits will help.
1756384 tn?1312562154 Has your vet (like the one I went to) ever offered to shave your cat during the worst of the shedding season? If you have to get rid of any animals, is there perhaps one that gives you a worse reaction on skin contact than another of your cats? F) Did you have any airborne allergies according to the allergist? Could it be more than one issue going on simultaneously? Also, you mention indoor cats plural.
Avatar f tn Somehow the cat had gotten into my room and was hiding under the bed without my knowledge. After finally realizing the cat had been in the room I picked it up and put it outside of the room. Within minutes my hands and arms began to itch and little pinkish round spots had appeared. It didn't last very long, only a few hours. I still have a few spots that have yet to fade, but thankfully they no longer itch.
Avatar n tn Today in revisiting and playing with a couple of cats I developed allergies. When I went home I played with my cat and the allergies returned. What could have caused this and should I adopt a new cat if I somehow now have cat allergies?
Avatar m tn Is it possible to rehome the cat and dog? Just wondering. If your girlfriend has had the cat since it was a kitten and her dog since it was a puppy, she would be very attached to them, so rehoming would not be an option. I wish you both well.
Avatar m tn The skin bumps are likely a secondary skin infection which is common with feline itching. Chlorpheniramine maleate 4mg tablets are a mild inexpensive antihistamine effective to help reduce cat itching and allergies. If there are no parasites such as fleas, there are many other allergens to which your cat is allergic causing the itching. An organic oatmeal bath is helpful to sooth irritated skin. Your vet can also determined the exact allergen.
Avatar f tn m curious...What allergies are the shots for? Because of all the skin issues now, does it mean that the allergy injections are not working? Or, do they feel she has become allergic to new items? Has she always been like this or is it a seasonal thing? What do you feed as a primary food? Have you tried Benedryl to help her rest? Let me know.....
Avatar f tn This needs a Vet visit and an antibiotic, allergies with cats appear on their skin, like sores and hair loss, not like with us and the symptoms you describe.
Avatar m tn t know why that is impacting his life, but it sounds like the cat has anxiety. Usually if the cat has food allergies, they will scratch around their neck, top of their head and possibly around their face. It could also be allergies from something else, such as fleas, flea bites or dust. This is harder to determine and may have to be discovered by a vet. If they feel that is the reason, they can give the cat a shot that will temporarily relieve the itching for about a month.
Avatar n tn The fat lip also is commonly secondarily infected with bacteria, so I would recommend a 2-3 week course of antibiotics if not already done. The three types of allergies are parasite (fleas, mites), food allergy, and pollen/dust allergies. If your cat is already on a good flea control such as Advantage or Revolution, then parasites are less likely.
Avatar f tn Steroid shots do seem to have a short-lasting effect on her, but I would really like to find out the root cause of this. After several skin scrapings, the vet did find 1 demodex cati mite (hence the dip), but he has not found any more than that. She's going to the vet again tomorrow, and we have been in contact with a dermatologist, but I'm trying to expand my search for any other ideas. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
779797 tn?1263618235 No red irriation, it isnt itching him, its just there. There was some flaking of the skin and a slight bit of fur coming out, but thats the extent of it. Note he is lacking hair in front of his ears, just normal.
Avatar f tn I just learned that online you can BUY samples of cat fur from certain cat breeders. For about $13.00 with shipping!! These are for the hypoallergenic type of cat called ---> Siberian Cat ... apparently it has to do with its DNA of some sort in the dander not producing a certain element that the other breeds create which most cat allergic people are triggered by. Some even offer money back in two weeks if you are allergic once the pet is placed. You can buy some type of insurance.
791533 tn?1309745344 Having an exam and simple hair/skin tests will likely reveal the problem to your veterinarian and thus to you to get your cat treated well. Fleas, mites, allergies, other parasites, bladder problems, skin infections can all be factors in what is happening in your cat and how to treat it. It is highly likely that one or more of these problems is the culprit that needs prompt veterinary treatment.
1578792 tn?1310889878 however, a few months ago when I introduced a new cat into the environment the cat wouldnt use her litterbox and when i called the vet she suggested i change the litter, so i did just that which worked. I dont know if that had anything to do with it but I do know Twinkie was missing fur prior but just mildly, nothing like the way it is now.
Avatar f tn Take the cat to the vet. The lethargy is worth investigating. Kitty might just be infected, or it might be ringworm, or he might be infested (fleas). Get him properly diagnosed. Good luck!
Avatar f tn The allergy would be to cat dander, which as Linda said, is actually pollen and other irritants that migrate to cat fur. The symptoms are those typical of airborne allergies and rarely cause skin itching. However, if the cat has fleas that could certainly account for your itching.
Avatar n tn You may need an antihistamine for the itch. Microscopic evaluation of skin scrapings of the area may help define a fungal infection. Do you have any allergies?
Avatar f tn Kitty still scratches some, and I do still have to give her 1/4 tablet of Zyrtec when her allergies bother her the most, but I am certain that because of changes I made for myself that I helped the kitty not suffer more with the environmental allergies.
1232362 tn?1333135406 I figure if people can build up resistance to antihistamines that it would be reasonable to assume that the same thing can happen to the cat. I generally give her the Zyrtec when the allergies are bothering her the most so that I don't give her too much.
