Common Questions and Answers about Cat allergies long term

cat-allergies

Avatar f tn I have a cat on .25 ml drops every other day. It will most likely be long term. Should I be concerned....I like my vet, but am very leary about drugs. He has a crippled front leg and has walked forward for his entire life....he is 13. He has developed gingivitis and cannot have any work on his teeth or any type of procedure requiring anesthetic. His internal organs have all come forward and are pushing on his lungs and heart.
Avatar n tn pill to start and then 1/4 of a pill every other day and see how he acts on it. He is saying to keep him on it long term with the 1/4 of a 5 mg every other day if it looks like it agrees with him and makes him feal better. Is this a good idea or will it cause any long term health problems?? My vet says it wont at such a small dose. What do you think . Would realy like a second opinion. Should I just give him small bit of aspirin at times ?
Avatar n tn I'm so confused! My cat has allergies, and the vet has given her steroids, but that only helps for a little bit and I don't want to keep giving her that. I got out a healthy alternative book for cats and it says to give her garlic, and for her to breathe eucalyptus oil. I looked online at other sources which say garlic and eucalyptus oil are toxic to cats. I don't know what to do! I don't want to kill my cat, but she needs some relief! How do I know whats the truth? Help please!!
681148 tn?1437661591 It seems like Akira has seasonal allergies and dust allergies in addition to her food allergies. Because I really don't want to give her long term steroids, I decided to only give her the 1/4 tablet of Zyrtec that the vet told me to give her before. I try to wait 'til I just have to give it to her, because I know that people can build up a tolerance to antihistamines, so I figure that animals can, too.
Avatar n tn Additionally, some allergic cats will respond to Atopica (oral cyclosporin) which would be less toxic long term compared to frequent steroid injections, and you can ask your veterinarian about Atopica if your cat's symptoms persist despite steroids and antibiotics. Avatar f tn Does anyone know the long term effects of abusing pain killers? I found out today that a friend of my husbands actually had seizures because of how long she was on vicodin. Just curious.
Avatar n tn Hi, IMO 8 mos is a VERY long time w/ no improvement. I would definitely ask about a biopsy to see what this actually is. If you can, see a veterinary dermatologist. You and your kitty need some answers. This biopsy will give you the answers you need, and that way you'll be able to give the correct meds that will actually help the problem. Prednisone, is a "band aid" when the vet doesn't know what's wrong and not good for your cat long term.
Avatar f tn How do y'all deal with cat allergies?!?!? I've just recently become super allergic to my best friends cat's and I wanna be able to go see her without her cats killing me!!! (or me wanting to kill myself for that matter!) It's really bad, and my eyes, ears, throat, nose and basically whole body have really become anti-cats lately :( What should I do?!?!?! Thanks for the tips and suggestions friends!
Avatar n tn While this is more common in overweight cats, it can affect any cat who goes for a long time without eating. This is not to say that it WILL happen, but it IS a risk, so it's better to force feed and be safe than allow the cat to not eat and be facing a potentially life-threatening illness later. If nothing else, try to get a few fingers of NutriCal into your cat each day until he starts to show an interest in food again. It truly could mean the difference between life and death.
Avatar f tn at the hospital, they took a regular cat scan, and told me my sinuses were filled with fluid and my eustation tube in my right was filled, and that the fluid looks as if it was in there for a long time, they went over a lot of questions with me, and they said a very long dose of antibiotics would eventually shrink the swelling and then clear the tubes...well its been almost 2 years now and i havent had vertigo in over a year, cause my right ear wont open..
5655568 tn?1371757104 well its good the litter you are using is non scented but perhaps changing the brand is worth a try, also the type of food he is eating...especially if this is a dry food, they are so loaded in chemicals/preservatives/grains that he could be sensitive to anyone or all of these. Bug bites usually don't affect a cat like his coat shows, Nor dust.
Avatar f tn I agree with Savas, but would like to add the possibility of food allergies. How long has your kitty had skin problems? And, do all of your kitties have the same problems? And, last but not least, have you switched food and what is their diet?
Avatar f tn s admitted that some of them cause him to haullucinate. I worried about the long term effects to his brain when we do get him off these.
Avatar n tn My cat has been sneezing and having nasal discharge for a month now. She has no other symptoms. She plays, she eats well. Just sneezes and has nasal drainage. Her eyes are good. No swollen or runny eyes. Is this allergies? I noticed she usually only sneezes when her nose touches objects or she sniffs. Sometimes mucous comes out with the sneeze.
118225 tn?1278654940 I was just curious if there was a long term relief for cat allergies. I have heard many people say there is a simple shot to take them away...but wonder if this is true, and how often the shot would be needed. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
1232362 tn?1333135406 I was hoping you would come along and answer - thanks FM. Don't you also give Akira a little Zyrtec?
Avatar n tn He has been eating and sleeping fine, acting normal, but am still concerned about long term effects. We live out in the country with lots of grass, hey and trees so I don't know if he has developed an allergy or if it something more serious.I would really appreciate your help.Thank you.
Avatar f tn Allergies aren't hereditary but they can come and go. Some people outgrow allergies and others get them when they are older. My little brother had a lot of allergies when he was a kid (including pet dander) and outgrew them, while I didn't have them as a child but became more prone to them as an adult.
203342 tn?1328737207 Actually, being allergic to cat hair of any length is quite rare. The more common cat allergy is to various proteins contained in cat saliva. These proteins can be deposited on hair and skin when the cat grooms itself and then become airborne when hair or dander (dead skins cells are shed. More likely the symptoms are from dust, mold, and other debris that get kicked out into the house when you first few times the central heating system kicks in.
Avatar f tn Allergies have a genetic basis but not always to the same allergen. Two parents with allergies (50% chance of developing allergies), one parent 30%. It is possible that it is an allergy, however make sure the cat wasn't bathed with anything, I reacted with hives once to the shampoo I used on a puppy at work.
681148 tn?1437661591 It could be something in the environment, too, because my own allergies have been driving me crazy big time lately, too--for about as long as Akira has been scratching more than usual. It could be all of the above, too. So, I was told to try the process of elimination by using just the turkey Wellness grain free. It's a lot like an elimination diet that people go through for food sensitivities.
1578792 tn?1310889878 I did mean to mention before, that inflammatorys should never be used on a cat, they can cause alot of harm,..I don't know why Vets insist on using for allergies when its been proven to not be effective anyway....so YES kitty can still have allergies when the medication didn't work. Start with changing the litter, if nothing else be sure its non-scented. paper pellets or wood chips would be good for a trial.
