cat-allergies

Avatar f tn Hello, Cat allergen, the allergy causing material from cats, is not cat hair, but rather a protein present in the dander and saliva of cats. These allergens become airborne as microscopic particles, which when inhaled into the nose or lungs can produce allergic symptoms. You can confirm whether you are allergic to cats by getting allergy testing done.Skin tests and blood tests like RAST are done for this purpose.Pls consult an allergist and get them done.
Avatar f tn Sniffles, I think you got that name regarding the allergies eh? First off, if your friend don't mind, make sure the cats can be brushed. You might or might not know this, but it's not the hair that we are allergic to, it's the cat's saliva. They clean themselves with the saliva and then it gets on the hair. So it's not just the cat/s, it's anything the cat licks or gets the hair after it cleans itself on. Brushing the cat before and after visits will help.

These proteins can be deposited on hair and skin when the cat grooms itself and then become airborne when hair or dander (dead skins cells are shed. More likely the symptoms are from dust, mold, and other debris that get kicked out into the house when you first few times the central heating system kicks in.
4319250 tn?1352735757 My 3 year old long hair domestic cat has been excessively licking most of his hair off, not completely bald but to where the hair remaining is extremely short. He has been doing this for several months now, as it started when I was finishing up a cheaper flea medication I got from a dollar store. He was fine with it for about 10 or 11 months but the very last dose that I gave him is when the licking began.

Avatar n tn Food allergies, fleas allergy dermatitis, scabies and other mites are all culprit's for hair loss. Please have your cat examined by a vet.
Avatar f tn My cat seems to be losing his hair from his waist down. He is not bald per se, it is just thinning. It appears as if he was shaved especially on his behind, hind legs and belly area. He appears to have lost weight, but it could be that his hair is so much less. He has taken to sleeping under my desk light. I am not sure if he like the warmth or if that is a symptom so I included it. He seems to be eating, etc normallly.
Avatar f tn I had cat hair allergy and it is much reduced now
Avatar n tn Hi Kiki, My cat was just dx'd with herpes in her eyes. For years, we too, thought it was allergies, but no. According to my vet, herpes is very common in cats. The way I figured out what was possibly going on with my cat was to google "feline herpes conjunctivitis." Some sites will give you pictures to look at and compare as well as descriptions. Discharge from the eyes have many possible dx's, but a simple blood test will confirm whether your kitty has herpes or not.
Avatar f tn A cat that was injured before or hurt in any way often pull there hair out. Pain causes them to pull out the hair in places where there in pain or either itching from healing.

Avatar n tn I don't know if this is behavorial or allergies. My cat, female has been licking all her hair off for 6 mo now. This happened sortly soon after she got fixed. She has always been on the thin side. I use Frontline Plus here in Florida. She is totally an inside cat. Now she looks naked except for her head and the places she cannot reach to lick. I took her to a Value Vet once and they told me to give her some hormone. This Did Not Work!.

Avatar f tn Finally my doctor decided my cat was simply neurotic and possibly she had OCD or depression. My doctor said as long its not causing problems like infections and open wounds it should be fine. She offered to give anti-depressants for the cat if it was OCD, depression or some or mental health pet problem, but at the price i have not. I will keep it in my back pocket for last resorts.
Avatar f tn This needs a Vet visit and an antibiotic, allergies with cats appear on their skin, like sores and hair loss, not like with us and the symptoms you describe.
Avatar n tn We've had our cat for about 6 months, she's never been outside. We live in a 1 bedroom apt. which means she sleeps in the living room. Our son is about to be born soon, and though we've kept telling ourselves today is the day we kick Toffee out, we just don't have the heart to do it. We've heard cat hair is bad for babies, and thats why we need to get rid of Toffee. Is cat hair really bad, or can Toffee stay? I have no idea what to do with her anymore!
168348 tn?1379357075 I'll read it. Honestly, I've never owned a Siberian kitty. I'd love to own one, that's for sure. But I've never even touched one. But if they're hypoallergenic then it must mean the hair texture is different. I know Yorkshire dogs are less likely to cause allergies because of the hair type which is closer than any other breed to human hair.
1786778 tn?1314987818 I had the same problem with my cat she had some flaking and hair loss so I shaved her with clippers as short as I could than put "Hot Spot" treatment on it 2x a day for a week but it only took a couple of days to clear up! When she had it the infected ares felt hot to the touch! Does your cats area feel warm? any way it healed up and her hair grew back just fine! I was thankful cause she was suffering with it for almost a year cause I didn't have the $ to take her to the vet!
Avatar f tn My mum is allergic to cats, what can i do to my cat to help her with her allergies??
Avatar n tn Hi veed, I'm sorry about your pet. Mange can be so difficult to treat!! I have my cat with ringworm, which also causes hair loss and it is also spreading. My cat doesn't seem to be itchy around the ears. So, would you describe for us how the skin looks? Is it dry, flaky, scaly, do you see scabs? Sometimes, the only symptoms for ringworm is hair loss in irregular patterns. Doesn't have to be circular spots. So, I'd pay attention to that.
Avatar n tn I have had cat allergies all my life which is a REAL bummer because I'm an animal lover and love kitties! My main symptoms? Itchy eyes. I get one cat hair near me and my eyes turn red, swell, start watering and then itch horribly. This is a common allergic reaction to cats. If it is a new cough, I'd say it's likely a virus and coughs linger with that. Once the air way is irritated, the cough will stay for a bit. But all allergies I suffer and my son involve itchiness.
